Could you check if your file is in RGB? At the top bar press Image -> Mode -> RGB to make sure that it's not set to grayscale.

Depends which stage you are referring to. Maybe your color is selected grey, or your opacity is not 100%.

@@thattrippydudeonyoutube7273 Yeah it doesn't work with black because it simply takes the hue from it. Otherwise it would look totally black and wouldn't be able to see the skin at all.

Make sure you select the White area on the right side (Mask) and not the gradient color itself. Then simply color that area with black. Let me know if it works.
