A1 Custom Fabrication Solutions (A1CFS) present our Do-It-Yourself videos. In this video the master fabricator JC Torres & apprentice/camera guy Juan Roberto explain how to interchange/change 20 tooth & 40 tooth stud gears on a 9 inch South Bend Lathe Works Model A. This is a must if you need oddball size threads like 5 3/4 tpi or 7 tpi. This applies to Model B and C as well. How to make custom made tool posts is the next video about this awesome machine. Plus see our other helpful videos! Muchas Gracias!

hi I'm from The Netherlands, watching you video , all looks so simple. i just bought a LiHUan lathe supposed to be a southbend clone. I'm trying to make 7/8 by 14 tread but cant find out which gears i need to use. the gears you use are the same as i have on my lathe but when make the tread it's just a fraction off. i think the gear setting must be 20 above, than my 80 idler wheel, and my 56 to my box, as i can see on your very clear video. is that correct.

Hello Mcgerzon and thanks for watching and commenting! If you want to produce 14 threads per inch on a 7/8 inch diameter workpiece, then yes the STUD GEAR needs to be the 20 tooth and the 40 tooth is not used and put in storage. Make sure the left hand tumbler is in the ‘A’ position as well. Also, be sure all the other gears are in the proper positions. Hope this helps so please let us know how it goes! Thanks very much! 😎🇳🇱 🇺🇸🤠

My stock gear is the 20 teeth the idles is a 80 teeth gear and the 56 teeth gear is on my norton case. when i turn treads its in A and number 8 according to my schedule it must be correct, but the treads produced are to wide , just a little, but not the correct 7/8 x 14 as expected and needed. @@a1customfabsolutions

Hi and thanks for the great video! I do have a question: how many teeth does the gear that is driving the quick change gear box have? Mine has 56 and my threading accuracy just isn't!
@a1customfabsolutions
@a1customfabsolutions 3 года назад
Hello and thanks for watching and commenting! What model lathe do you have? The South Bend model 9A? On South Bend model 9A The lead screw gear that drives quick change is 56t. The 40t or 20t stud gears (depending on the tpi ur needing) sit in storage on the 56t lead screw gear

check tublacain spacing on gears he says use a paper width spacing
@a1customfabsolutions
@a1customfabsolutions 3 года назад
Hello and thanks for watching and commenting. Yes we have seen this guys many vids and we like to save paper but it’s good for some people but less useful for others. Feeler gauges could be used as well but it’s just an unnecessary long step. Once you become familiar with the feel of the gear and inspect it visually it becomes second nature to put the proper gear spacing. PAPER METHOD IS GOOD! Tublacain has many good vids! Thanks again for this info! JR @ A1CFS

Hello Luka, thanks for watching and commenting! If you change out the stud gear AND the screw gear it would be possible to do 2 TPI. Let us know how it goes. Thanks again! 🤠⚙️🛠🗜👍🏼😎

how can i change the gears so i can do " passes" when cutting material to be really slow ?
@a1customfabsolutions
@a1customfabsolutions 3 года назад
Hello If You have a SB model 9A b or c then use your double back gears to slow the rotation down. Also use the slow speed pulley at the motor. Let us know how it goes...Take care

Why is the gear on the right side even there?
@a1customfabsolutions
@a1customfabsolutions 3 года назад
Hello we appreciate your questions! The 20t stud gear is used primarily but when threading 4, 4 1/2, 5, 5 1/2, 5 3/4, 6, 6 1/2, or 7 threads per inch then the 40t stud gear is used! Thanks for watching and stay subscribed and tuned in for future videos! Gracias!
