Volvo Penta Gen 5 oil change.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I have since purchased the actual 'Workshop Manual' for my engine. The oil capacity stated within it is 6.0 quarts (with filter change, for both the 5.3 and 6.2 liter engines). This is in conflict with both the 'Service and Maintenance Manual' and 'Operators Manual' for the same V8 engines (the 4.3 liter V6capacities do match between documents, also at 6 quarts). I am not sure which one is correct (no info on the web, and no answers on some specific VP sites I visit), but assume it is 6.0 quarts as that is about what I drew out for the boats first oil change. I would start by putting 6.0 quarts in, then checking the dipstick (as horrible as it is to read). It blows my mind VP would have this discrepancy published for such a long time. I can't be the first to notice it.....
I have provided Amazon Affiliate links below for items discussed in the video. What does affiliate link mean? I may earn a small (much appreciated!) commission from Amazon for providing the link, but it costs you nothing.
Oil (Volvo Penta 10W-40 synthetic). I would add all oil options to your cart, then choose the best option based on price and availability. Capacities again are V8, 7.5 quarts, and V6 is 6.0 quarts.
(21681794 - quart): amzn.to/49eIjn6 (1 qt) or amzn.to/3xfy44B (5 pack)
(21681795 - gallon): amzn.to/3TAtUvD
Filter Element: amzn.to/3VEsrXD or amzn.to/49ij1V8 (2 pack)
Jabsco Engine Oil Drain hand pump: amzn.to/3TUoywG
Grab some nitrile gloves and shop towels while you are at it! They are good for 1,001 uses!!:
Gloves: amzn.to/3VGiRnh (Large) or amzn.to/3xpk9c4 (X-Large)
Towels amzn.to/3J2VWeg
Cheap funnel if you need one: amzn.to/3TFU8Nm
Lastly, please subscribe so you can easily find my channel to return to for review the next time you need to change your oil.
Thanks for watching!

Agree. It’s easier to change boat oil than car oil. I don’t have to get my ramps out and crawl under it!

That aluminum washer is a “crush washer” for the drain plug in the oil pan.

Thanks for the comment! It must be included for applications using the same element where you drain the oil with the drain plug. Thx again.

The oil tube for dipstick may not go to bottom of oil pan this may count for the discrepancy in the observed versus expected amount of oil withdrawal
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 4 месяца назад
I completely agree! I only put in as much as I am able to take out, then check the dipstick (which is about impossible to read...) to avoid an under or overfill.

Thanks so much for your videos. I pumped about the same volume of old oil as you, and I agree that it doesn't look like 7.5 quarts. I've added 5.5 quarts of new oil and the dip stick looks like it's full although it's really hard to read. Do you remember if you added 7ish quarts of new oil? I'm finding it hard to believe that 2 quarts of oil was left behind after pumping.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 10 месяцев назад
Yea that is the worst dipstick in the world! Have you started the boat yet since you added the 5.5 quarts? As some amount of oil will move up into the filter once you do. When I changed it at the end of last season, I actually pumped it out at the parking area at the top of the ramp after our final outing, as the oil was real good and hot (I did let the filter vent when I did that). Then we made the 40 minute drive home, and I pumped another pint or so out that had drained down into the oil pan. There will always be some residual oil in there, so I don't think it is necessary to add the full amount. I would go with at least 6.5, but 7'ish is about what I do. As of course you do not want to overfill it.

@@iowabuckeye Glad I'm not the only one that thought the dipstick was TERRIBLE! I have not started it. I was going to let it drain overnight since I'm sure there's still some sitting on the sides of the tube I pumped it out of which rub onto the dipstick. I will check it tomorrow and probably add another quart and go from there. Thanks again for your help!
@drtbar260
@drtbar260 10 месяцев назад
Just an update. Still can't read sh*t on the dipstick, but I verified that I pumped just over 6 quarts out of the engine. So, I added a little more and just going to call it good I guess. I don't see that I have any other options to verify the oil level.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 10 месяцев назад
I’d like to figure out if the tube ends at the front or back of the oil pan. Then maybe park it facing either up or down a hill to get the most out. I’ve also thought about leaving the dipstick out overnight and reading again in the morning. In hopes any oil in the tube will have drained out as opposed to being trapped on the stick and then smeared on it with the next check.

I would measure out the old oil volume to ensure you have as much old oil removed. My vacume oil extractor has a tube that goes down the dip stick tube right to the base or close to the base of the oil pan. I doubt the vacume oil tool you are using is reaching the base of the oil pan as the tubes normally terminate an inch or two short of the base of the oil pan.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye Месяц назад
The extractor pump I am using does not extend down the dipstick tube, but rather attaches to the top of the tube and uses the entire length of the dipstick tube to extract from. The tube terminates on the port side of the lowest point of the oil pan for the V8, and at the rear of the pan for the V6. Is your engine also a Gen V V8? As there is conflicting information between the 'Workshop Manual' and 'Service and Maintenance Manual' for the Gen V V8s. Workshop states 6 qts, Maintenance states 7.5 qts (both with filter change). I did put a note to reference this in the video's description, as I assume many may be over-filling. Thx for the comment!

So far I have been very happy with the engine/drive. About 110 hours on it now, with the only issue being a leaky yoke seal on the drive at about 80 hours. Which was covered under warranty. Maintenance procedures are basically the same between the V6 and V8, and I have a playlist that covers most everything (will add to it as I do more…..). Good luck with your possible purchase!

Does the v6 use the same engine oil weight? I thought the 240-v6-M used a 5w-40
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 6 месяцев назад
Do you have access to your boat? If so, just check for the oil part number on your coolant tank. I did look in the 'V6/V8 Service and Maintenance Manual', but it just says to add the correct quantity and quality of oil in the procedure. V6 capacity is only 6 quarts too I believe.

I have a question regarding the power steering fluid. I had a small leak on the power steering side and I wanted to double check the level of power steering fluid to make sure I didn't loose too much. It appears that, the dip stick is on the same container as the coolant? Where do you check and add (if necessary) power steering fluid?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye Год назад
I’m not sure I fully understand your question, but you check the power steering fluid with the dipstick on the power steering reservoir cap, and just pour some into that reservoir if you need to add some.
@rahouston
@rahouston Год назад
@@iowabuckeye Where is the power steering dip stick? Is it the white cap on top of the coolant reservoir?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye Год назад
Yes, the white cap. Just to the rear and to the right of the coolant cap. Unscrew it and the dipstick is on the bottom of the cap.

Hello, I bought the same pump to drain the oil out however there is a drain cap next to the engine oil dipstick don’t allowing me to connect the pump for lack of espace in between. What is the function of that blue “Drain” cap? Can I remove it?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 7 месяцев назад
There should be 2 blue caps if you have a Gen 5 Volvo. One is the ‘plunger’ for the quick drain system. And the other is a cap that unscrews so you can hook a hose up to it to so you can run the boat on a garden hose when out of the water. If that is the blue cap that is in your way, then yes, you can unscrew it to remove the oil. Just be sure to put it back into place when done. Else your water pump/impeller will draw air instead of sucking water up from the bottom of your outdrive. I hope that answers your question.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 7 месяцев назад
Just one more point of clarity. Do not have that cap removed if you are warming the engine and are connected to the fitting on the drive or on muffs. Only remove it if the boat is not running and when you are sucking the oil out.

I bought a nock off oil filter before winterizing boat last year. Well first lake day and oil leaking from the cap like crazy. I couldn’t find the OEM oil filter anywhere. I’ve tried ordering multiple times. I’m guessing the oil-ring that came with the filter is the wrong size. Is the o-ring a specific size? Has anyone ran into this issue?

Actually I did not add links to my video descriptions until the end of March this year. So since you purchased last year, it was not through a link I posted. If you did purchase through my link since end of March, can you please let me know what day you placed your order? I can then inspect the link you ordered through to ensure it is correct. And if you do order through my links, they are to OEM filters. Thx.
