Fuel system and coolant winterization process for a Volvo Penta Gen 5 boat engine.
I have provided Amazon Affiliate links below for items discussed in the video. What does affiliate link mean? I may earn a small (much appreciated!) commission from Amazon for providing the link, but it costs you nothing.
Boat winterizing kit by Camco: amzn.to/4afbkQJ
RV/Marine antifreeze: amzn.to/4awbnHE (1 gallon) or amzn.to/4afbCah (4 gallons)
Again - the winterizing kit and RV/Marine antifreeze are not required per Volvo's procedure, but I explain why I do it from about the 35 second to 1 minute mark of the video (being in Iowa, I am extra cautious/anal about this.....).
STA-BIL Marine fuel stabilizer: amzn.to/3xpgRFJ (8 oz, treats 80 gallons) or amzn.to/3vodoqD (32 oz, treats 320 gallons)
Stihl 2-cycle oil: amzn.to/49j97T7 (3 pack) Any quality 2 cycle oil will work, but this is what I use.
Inexpensive gas tank if needed: amzn.to/3Vz0nVN or amzn.to/3PGLL2F
Not in the video, but I also pull my batteries and place rodent repellant in the boat while stored. I have had good luck with 'Fresh Cab' repellant. I buy a 4 pack, and put 2 in front and 2 in back. Then replace with new ones about mid-way through storage. amzn.to/443pLoP
I also remove any items I feel a mouse may want to use as nesting material (lifejackets, floaties, noodles, etc.) and store those in the basement.
Lastly, please subscribe so you can easily find my channel to return / review the next time you need to put your boat away for the winter. : (
Thanks for watching!

This is another GREAT video - very much to the point and clear. I don't have the ability to pull my boat from the water, so access to rear water inlet is not practical. What I've done instead is first drain all fresh water using EZ-drain. Following that, I close EZ-Drain and separate inlet hose at back of engine. Using an adapter hose, I first pour about 3/4 of a gallon of pink into the hose to prime the impeller. After that, I start with a fresh gallon of pink and put the adapter I made into the jug (at bottom). I start the engine just long enough to suck it nearly dry. This accomplishes pretty much what you do, but the big difference is I don't drain the pink after this process. I leave it in so the impeller stays wet during the winter. I'm curious as you your thoughts about my process.

@iowabuckeye Год назад
I personally would still 'drain the pink' as this lessens the chance of any fluid freezing in the heat exchanger. As for trying to keep your impeller wet, the system is not pressurized. So I assume any fluid in the impeller would drain out the input side over time anyhow? And I would assume if you are putting 3/4 gallon into the flush port on the engine, it is just running out the input vents on the bottom of the drive? Or maybe I am not understating what you are saying?

Great video. Where did you get the drain tap to connect to the external flush? I have tried to find any stock tap but I cannot find any with matching thread.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye Год назад
Are you referring to the connection to the blue flush port? If so, that is just threaded for a standard garden hose.

Great video. For clarification..the one gallon tank has 3 ounces of oil, right?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye Год назад
The exact amount is 2.6 oz per gallon for 50:1 mixture (128/50). That little Stihl bottle is 2.6 oz.

Hi, thanks for this helpful video. Could you have hooked the antifreeze contraption to the hose that’s next to the oil dipstick (instead of the one next the lower unit)?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 2 года назад
Yes I could have. For my initial start up this past spring I used that fitting as I assumed it would get water to the impeller quicker.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 2 года назад
One more thing - if you use the fitting by the engine be sure the antifreeze jug is higher than the fitting to provide gravity pressure for it to flow. That is a reason I put it on the swim platform as the outdrive fitting is a few feet below.

Can you advise where you found the instructions on adding the antifreeze? I only see how to drain using the quick drain and adding the 50:1 fuel mixture. Also, what antifreeze did you use? Thank you for this video, extremely helpful.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 2 года назад
Actually for engines with the Volvo quick drain system the instructions do not mention flushing with antifreeze, but rather state just pushing the drain plunger is all that is required. I guess I am a bit particular and do it for extra insurance in case there is some water left 'somewhere' that does not get drained. I do discuss this starting at about the 26 second through 1 minute mark of the video. It is simple to do and is extra piece of mind. As for antifreeze, just make sure to use the marine/RV type. Do this as it is non-toxic and will not pollute the water/ground when flushing. It is readily available at most big box HW stores, Walmart, auto parts stores, etc. Thx for watching.

Great video. A few questions. Did you add Stabil to the small portable container with the 2-cycle oil? When you added Stabil to the small tank, I assume it was a very small amount since Stabil is usually 1 ounce to 10 gallons of gas?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye Год назад
Yes the fuel had Stabil added, but I had mixed it with the Stabil in the 5 gallon tank (easier to measure the correct amount). Then poured a gallon into the smaller tank to mix with the 2 cycle oil. The mixture ratio is the same for my smaller 2 cycle engines so I can use whatever is left over in them!

Thanks for the video. I too am in Iowa and going to do this in a few weeks. Where did you source your Volvo engine oil (and outdrive too for that matter). No volvo penta dealers here in DSM. Iowa city dealer?

I actually ordered this year's engine and outdrive oil earlier this week and they arrived today. I have since added links in the video description from where I buy from on Amazon. If you are changing the outdrive oil you should also get new o-rings. If you do have a DPS-D1 drive, the VP part numbers for them are qty 2 3855081 (drain plug and vent) and qty 1 3852045 (dipstick). It took me a bit to chase down the o-ring part numbers, so maybe that will save you some time if you have the same drive. I do plan to make a video of changing the drive oil, but that may be 4 to 6 weeks yet. I am in Marion.

Did you try the outside drain after you drained the block to see if as you mentioned some water may have stayed in the leg? Or maybe if you disconnected the flush kit first you won’t know. Also interesting Volvo says 50 to 1 fuel mix which must be ok for the cat converters which is good to know
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 2 года назад
Sorry but can't recall the series of events when I unhooked everything to answer this. If you trailer your boat, I assume you could try this experiment after any trip this summer? Just push the plunger after your trip and see if the leg drains before opening the water connection on the leg. I do assume the plunger will drain the leg as it would release the vacuum.

When you use the EZ-drain is it ok to just leave it open or better to close it and put pin back in? I figured leaving it open would allow any remaining water to drain out

No harm in leaving it open. Just make sure you remember to close it before starting in the spring!!!

Why not leave the antifreeze in instead of draining it out? Surely that would give extra protection.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 2 года назад
I surely could have, but decided to drain it as that is what is discussed in the Volvo manual for winterization. And once again, the manual states using antifreeze is not necessary, but I did it for extra protection just in case the 'drain' happens to leave water somewhere.....

Any ideas where to get a service manual and owners manual on the engine. I didn’t get one when purchasing the boat used.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 2 года назад
I believe you can go to the Volvo Penta website and find a copy of the general operational and maintenance manual free of charge. It takes some searching around on the site, but I am sure you can find it. Reach back out if not and I'll see if I can find it. I also think you need the serial # off the engine to ensure you get the correct manual. I did get the manual when I bought the boat as it was new.

Did you tape up the bottom fresh water suction on bottom of drive?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 3 года назад
I didn't initially. But after noticing it wasn't drawing as well as I had hoped due to lack of pressure, I shut the engine off, taped up the vents so it could not draw air from there, restarted the engine, and finished emptying the tank. Make sure to take the tape off when finished of course!!

I have a question, I was changing my impeller and the old one was pretty beat up but 95% of it was there somebody said look in the heat exchanger for pieces of your impeller. Do you know how to take apart the Heat exchanger To look for pieces?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 2 года назад
No I've never taken the heat exchanger apart. I did find this video though for removal: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D8IMTj-_zy0.html I would start by just disconnecting the hose at the bottom of the exchanger from the impeller as that is where any pieces would probably be which may block flow into the unit. This sounds simple, but could be a pain depending on access. If it does look like a pain and you are sure no big pieces broke off your impeller, I would just run the boat and watch your water temp. If if looks normal I wouldn't worry about it. As any small pieces probably just went out the exhaust.

Where is the drain location to change out the internal VCS coolant? Is service interval 5 years on this coolant?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye Год назад
The service protocol sheet states an interval of 48 months or 200 hours (whichever occurs first) for the internal coolant. To remove the coolant there are 3 plugs; one of the front of the engine and 1 on each side/bottom. You will probably want to visit the VP website and download a copy of the Service and Maintenance manual to see their exact locations.

Can we expect a video of this?
@richardhurt7703

I would be concerned about the possibility of the impeller being damaged because it was dry since you didn’t use “rabbit ears” on the lower unit.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 3 года назад
This outdrive has a convenient hose quick-connect that can be used instead of 'rabbit ears' attached to it's pick-up vents. In the video I did state I was concerned it was not drawing correctly due to the pick-ups possibly drawing air (since they were not covered), but went back and looked at some video clips (not included in this final video) and was able to see the antifreeze was actually coming out of the exhaust bellows versus the pick-ups. Since the jug was emptying, the impeller was drawing the antifreeze (therefore not dry). This was also confirmed when I pushed the quick drain. Good comment though!
@richardhurt7703
@richardhurt7703 3 года назад
Thanks for replying! I thought (mistakenly) that stern drives had both a water pump at the front of the engine as well as a impeller in the lower unit. My bad!
@14shans
@14shans Год назад
@@iowabuckeye It seems as if when you turned the water off and antifreeze on , the water stopped coming out the exhaust port, and no antifreeze started coming out, which makes me think there was no antifreeze getting into your exhaust manifold
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye Год назад
There was of course less pressure when the water was tuned off/antifreeze turned on. Antifreeze was most definitely coming from the exhaust bellows. Following publishing the video I did go back and review some of the other clips and pink coming from the exhaust was easily visible. It was all drawn in so went somewhere!!!

What about summerizing it?
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 2 года назад
For the first start this year I connected my water supply, but this time I did it at the connection on the engine by the oil dipstick. My thinking on this is this connection will get water to the impeller sooner than the one on the outdrive, therefore the impeller will not run dry for as long (not much difference, but my line of thinking). Then turned the key halfway to let the fuel pump prime for a few seconds, then cranked it. It cranked for an extra second or two, and fired right up. I had also pulled my batteries and kept them in the basement over winter and trickle charged them about monthly.
@jonathanRRH
@jonathanRRH 2 года назад
@@iowabuckeye Any hints on getting some oil circulation/pressure after the long winter before firing up? I'm going to pull the fuel pump fuse to stop bore wash & crank the engine with the kill cord disconnected. But as it's fuel injected I suspect I probably don't need to pull the fuse.
@iowabuckeye
@iowabuckeye 2 года назад
Can’t help with that one. I’d just try and confirm cranking does build enough pressure to circulate the oil. Else the cylinders will run dry longer versus just starting. For the fist start I’d guess it cranked for 3 or so seconds before firing off.
