In this episode Dana walks through on how to change the oil on a 2010 Subaru Forester. Although the 2010 is part of the 3rd Generation, the motors were changed from an EJ to an FB in 2011 so the parts we used will not be the same that later model years will use.
Please be sure to dispose of all oil products responsibly at an auto parts store. There is no charge for that service.

Thanks for the video! Hooah. Awesomw detail and pointers (priming the oil filter) [im presumijg you worked in a motor pool?] Just changed the oil on my late mother-in-law's car. Yep, filthiest oil change ever! Before removing the oil filter, punch a small hole in the bottom of it and drain it, then remove it.

Hooah Advocacyrl8017. Thank you for that and for watching as well as sharing your journey. We appreciate it all. Art here...I served and spent my time around old Hummers in the motor pool but Dana didn't serve. She was just taught well by her Dad and those simple lessons made a good foundation for other auto work. Condolences on your MIL. Good hack on the oil filter. Will have to remember that one. Stay safe out there!

I wonder what could be the big deal in just dropping the 5qts on it since it is 4.5 qts ..
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 5 месяцев назад
Hi HavanaFly, thanks for watching and asking this! Overfilling the oil can cause all sort of problems with the engine and is just as dangerous as running without enough oil. We wouldn't recommend knowingly overfilling the engine. If you find that your engine has consumed some oil during a regular oil level check in between oil changes, then that's the perfect time to add in the extra half a quart. Hope this helps; take care and stay safe!

What size is the oil filter socket for the 2009-2010 Subaru Forester?
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 8 месяцев назад
Hi J! Thanks for watching and commenting. We honestly have no clue what size the socket we used is. Dana has had it in her toolbox for 20 years or so, but we would recommend taking the filter with you to an auto parts store to find the appropriate size. We know this isn't the answer you were hoping for, but hope it helps. Take care and stay safe!

Is 5w40 better than 0w20 (recommended on manual) for Subaru Forester 2011?
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 2 года назад
With Subarus, it really boils down to what is printed on the oil cap. If you get too thick or too thin an oil, then it can mess up the internals. The boxer engine is definitely more delicate than an inline 4-cylinder or American V style engine.

The OEM Filter used by subaru has the worst filter media on the market. Has anyone used any other brand that works well?
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers Год назад
Hi Nikolak, thanks for watching and informing us of the poor filtration on OEM! I'll leave it for everyone else to chime in if they have found a better filter with OEM fitment, but for me, I was not able to find a good seal in aftermarket filters. My preference was zero leaks over premium filter media, and I changed my oil more often as a result. Take care and stay safe!

Does the oil in the pre filled filter counts for the oil amount of the car?
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 2 года назад
Thanks for the great question! Yes, I ensure the amount of oil I pour into the filter to prime it is from the total volume that I pour in.

I really miss having the oil filter under the car. Unless you wait a while, the topside mounted filters always make a mess. Would you ever trust an oil drain vale?
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 3 года назад
Thanks brother. Yeah, I have mixed feelings on the topside filter. I've heard mixed stories on the drain valve and that's why I haven't jumped to install one.

how often to change oil and filter?
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 3 месяца назад
Hello Strategic! Thanks for watching and asking. Depending on your specific year, trim level, and oil type, Subaru will recommend oil changes between 3750 and 5000 miles. I would highly recommend that no matter what oil you use, be it synthetic, blend, or conventional, that you would change your oil more frequently. We would recommend and interval closer to the 3000-3500 mile range in order to ensure that you do not cause undue wear on your boxer engine. The engine design, as fun and efficient as they are, does seem to degrade the oil faster than other engine designs. Changing your oil more frequently is cheaper than a new short block! Hope this helps; take care and stay safe!

i'm looking around where i can get a good used one in iowa or missouri. What's the difference in size and performance between Forester and Outback?@@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 2 месяца назад
@strategicservices9906 Unfortunately we're not able to assist with those. We live in Ohio. We would recommend that you look at FB marketplace or join local Subaru groups on FB to help find those in good condition. We're also not very familiar with the outback to provide a side-by-side difference between the two. Cheers!

What happens if you forget to put the washer on screw. New oil is already in, lol
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 11 месяцев назад
Hi Israel, thanks for watching and asking. I will say that I have had a crush washer fail and I lost a lot of oil in the first day. If you know you forgot it, I would try to drain the oil into a clean container, reinsert the bolt with washer, then pour the oil back in. If you don't have a clean means to collect clean oil then you'll have to dump it and start over. Hope this helps and things go smoothly for you; take care and stay safe!
