In this video I show you what steps I took in order to change the spark plugs in my wife's 2013 Lexus GS350 AWD. This video should also be helpful for all owners who own a IS350 or RC350 since both of these cars have the same engine found in my GS350. Changing the sparks yourself can save you between $350-$400 and this service can be performed in under an hour. Let me show you.

Thanks for the video Dan! Reputable mechanics in my area wanted between 250 and 280 for this service, and the dealer quoted around 350. The OEM plugs cost less than 60 bucks, so even if you don't have the tools, you can buy them and do this job yourself and still come out ahead. This is definitely worth to DIY for all except the most mechanically challenged persons.

I dont know how to diy. Cant trust mechanics with my new baby rc350. They dont put shots back in the right place when removing it. A mech was working on a customer’s car at my friend’s shop. He yanks the plastic part from the engine and broke it. I said “u broke it”. He said he does not care lol

Much easier to access the sparkplugs on this longitudinally mounted V6 engine with the GS. Doing this on a transverse mounted V6 like an ES 350 or RX 350 is a PITA.

Thank you for the video, it was very helpful. Just a note id make is that the original OEM plugs (at least in my owners manual and engine) are the FK20HBR11 denso iridium long life plugs which come pre-gapped at the factory spec. I ordered the alternative IKBH20TT that you used in the video, and found out that the gap is actually at .040, smaller than what it should be and since i imagine that the non-long life plugs would have to be replaced even sooner than the 60k mile recommended service interval i decided to spend the extra money on the OEM FK20HBR11 that came with my car. I love your series! Hope to possibly see one with the coolant in the future as that will need to be done on mine soon.

John, both plugs are "long life" and rated for 100k miles. Both IKBH20TT and the more expensive FK20HBR11 are just about identical. They share the same resistance, heat range, electrode material (iridium), and longevity (both 100k mile plugs). Gap on IKBH20TT is .039" and gap on FK20HBR11 .043" -- I took these specifications right from Denso's website. I have almost 40k on my spark plugs since this video and the car runs perfectly. Denso is a parent company of Toyota and if they feel IKBH20TT can be used in the GS350 then I have no worries, but definitely use what you feel comfortable with. I decided to save the $30 and go with IKBH20TT.

hey bro, i wanna do this so bad to my rc350 cuz it jus hit 80k miles. how do you store all the bolts and not get confused with which bolt goes where?

@samperry2517 do you mean for the coil packs? Or for the side where the wire harness is? Cool packs have same size bolts. What ever you take from the side that is attaching the harness to the block, you need to mark them somehow if you can't remember.

Hi Dan just wanted to say thank you for the vid. I had some stumbles but with your help I got this done today. No engine lights so I think we're all good! IMO the driver's side plugs were way harder to deal with as they were tucked into some tight spots.

That NO GAP is not always true. You should still at least check the gap out of the box. Electrode tips can get bounces around during shipping. As they say trust but verify.... Another self taught tip is after you install the plug. Put the plug that was removed into the same box and label with the cylinder number. After all the plugs are installed you should have same number of old plugs. The concept of this is to review the plugs even if not right away. You can compare against burn charts and if there are any excessively abnormal plugs you can isolate the cylinder for future monitoring...

Changed mine out this weekend. Easy enough, video explains it well. I’m pumped, just saved myself $600. 12 hours later, CEL lights up, I get an EVAP code (P0411) and my alternator just took a dump (battery dead as a result). My guess is that I may have crimped/pushed/pinched a wire(s) when doing the change. Can’t be coincidence that I’ve never had a single issue with this car, then the day after I do the change this happens. Anyone else have this issue? DIY Dan..what say you?

You should put the removed bolts away from the holes near the hood latch, lest they fall down in there, and have a magnet wand handy.

Thanks for the vid! Same process for the Lexus Rc350! That wiring harness grommet @1:34 was impossible to tug out from the intake manifold. Was there a particular way you pulled it out? I couldn’t for the life of me get it to pop out. Somehow the zip tie popped off and it saved me a lot of grief. Thinking about just getting a regular zip tie and zip it up instead of using that thing again.

My Lexus dealer quoted me $2,278.00 for the 60K mile service today for my 2015 GS 350. The most pricey part of the service they said was the replacement of the spark plugs ($800-900). WTF! I think I’m done with the dealer.

Holy cow! What did the "60k mile service" all include for $2,278?! Changing the spark plugs on a GS350 is pretty easy and not time consuming at all. Go to an independent garage for the service. It will be 1/4 of that price.

@@DIYDanCarsReplace: Brake fluid cabin air filter, engine oil and filter, rotate tires, spark plugs, measure brake pads and rotors. Inspect: Drive axle boots, drive belts, exhaust system, fuel tank and lines, read diff fluid, suspension ball joints, steering linkage, engine coolant, transmission, rack and pinion assembly. I might have missed a few but that’s pretty much the bulk of it. I’m with you on the independent mechanic. Great videos by the way! Thanks.

thanks for the video. Did you notice need to change the coil pack gaskets? the mechanics that i asked told me they do need to be changed. But i am sure its because they want to add and extra 50 to do this. I am hoping this video will help me with my 2013 GS 450 h.

Awesome vid Dan, liked and subbed. I have the 2013 non F sport version, and referenced your videos for the brake pad and oil changes. Don't have a lift, so I am still thinking of ways to lift the car high enough and level enough to do the diff fluid change. Are you worried about the so called "life time" transmission oil? I would definitely change it before 100k, but it seems like they went out of the way to make that hard to do. It would be great if you did a video on it when you get a chance.

Thanks Ethan! In my opinion there is no such thing as "lifetime". I plan on dropping the pan and changing the fluid and filter once the car reaches between 60k-70k miles and will do it every 60k miles after that. Hope this helps.

Excellent video, thank you, it will help me a lot when I need to change mine. This seems easier than in my previous car, a Nissan Maxima. That said, I personally like to put some dielectric grease on the inside coil boots, or a tiny bit of anti seize cpd on the new spark plugs threads since we have long life pieces.

I use Power Stop ceramic brake pads. I put a link to the exact pads I used in my how to change the brake pads and rotors video. So far I have like the Power Stop pads and they seem to have cut down on the dust significantly.

Dan, love your videos. Liked and sub'd. I have a 2014 GS350 AWD. I'm curious about your choice in spark plugs. Lexus number is 90919-01249 which corresponds to Denso 3473. Denso website lists Denso 4705 = Denso Iridium TT and Denso 3473 = Denso Iridium Long Life (SIP). Curious as to why you chose the 4705 over the 3473 and what the differences are?

The 4705 are cheaper, but don't come pre-gapped correctly and would need to be replaced sooner than 60k for best performance is what i presume. I recommend the 3473 Denso plugs.

Thanks for the diy videos! I also own a 2013 awd gs 350 with about 67k miles. I just now notice the clacking sound in the engine bay (with the hood up)...louder especially on the passenger side. Does yours make the clacking sound too? Is that normal? A mechanic at Lexus dealer said that the sound is due to the direct and port injection and the high pressure fuel pump, but I like to hear your opinion about it! Thanks again for the videos...very helpful!

Yes, your Lexus mechanic is right, this is the nature of a DI engine ("clacking sound").

Oh ok thanks! Also, I thought the Denso 4705 (IKBH20TT) were the oem so I ordered those from my local AutoZone, but the old ones were actually the Denso 3473 (FK20HBR11). They are both said to fit the 2013 GS 350, but the 4705 is gapped at 0.040in and the 3473 is gapped at 0.044in. The 4705 is almost half the price of the 3473 though. Do you know why the difference in prices and gaps?

I'm using the 4705's as well. I didn't want to spend the double the cost on a "long life" plug when Lexus recommends the spark plugs be changed every 60k miles. Both the 4705 and 3473 can be used in a GS350. The only difference between the two is the 3473 is marketed as a "long life" plug.

You're past due for this service. Lexus recommends they be changed every 60k.

I have a 2008 gs 350 with 160k miles and decided to change the spark plugs. I torqued them to 15-17 ft lb. After i started the car there is a huge knocking noise from the engine. No check engine lights or anything. I even test drove it for 5 minutes but the knocking sound didnt go. I removed the engine cover to see where the knocking noise is coming from and its from the spark plugs itself on both sides. Any help on this? I will try to remove them and install them back in once again but if this happens again?

Right, I'm dreading doing it on my 102k is350 (along with filter). I ordered the oem parts from Bell Lexus last summer but have been putting it off. Luckily, I found a place about 30 minutes away, gear head garage, that let's you rent a lift for $25/hour. So I think I'll rent for a few hours and do trans, diff and rcf front bushings.

Hi Isai, did you notice oil pooling around the spark plugs when you went to removed them? If so, then it sounds like you will need valve cover gaskets soon. How many miles are on your car? We're at 100k and so far I haven't noticed any oil pooling around the spark plugs. Sure, if you want to go the extra mile and it won't hurt to change the PCV if your car has got some miles on it.

No! Lexus doesn't recommend anti-seize on the spark plug threads per their shop manual. Adding anti-seize to spark plug threads actually lubricates the threads, causing you to over-tighten the spark plugs. Over-tightening causes the metal shell to distort and break the seal between the shell and the porcelain center. This can cause misfires. Also, most spark plugs have either a zinc or nickel plating that prevents the threads from seizing in the cylinder head. That’s different from decades ago when spark plugs didn’t have any coating and could seize in the cylinder head, making removal tough.

Stubborn electrical connectors, if you have some electrical conmector cleaner handy.... spray it down and try again. Dust and gunk gets trapped under tabs. And the cleaner is of course safe for "connectors"

Most people online say torque the spark plugs to 13ft/lbs. Isn't 23ft/lbs way too much?

Hi Dan, do you have to use a spark plug socket? what is preventing the sparkplug once its loosened from not coming out? does your socket have some sort of magnet or friction sufrface to ensure the spark plug doesn't slip fro mthe socket face? thx

You need something to hold the spark plug while you pull it out. A spark plug socket has padding inside that grips the plug and prevents it from falling out.

What is the spark plug socket size?

Do you need to gap the new spark plugs or just put them in as is?

If you bought the same spark plugs that I did then you shouldn't have to gap them at all because they already come pre-gapped.

Hey Dan, @1:32 you pulled the wiring harness. On my Rc350, it looks like the wiring harness is zip-tied to my manifold. Do I still pull it out or cut the zip tie? Thanks !!

Hi Elliot, my wiring harness was held in by a grommet on the intake manifold. I simply gave it a tug around the grommet area and it came undone. I didn't have to cut the zip tie.

I have the same 2013 GS350. I installed the same spark plugs but when I started my car, it started shaking. What do you think is the problem?

My guess is one or more coil packs are unplugged. Double check that all of the connections are clicked into place.

Yep, should be the same since both cars share the same engine.

I am going to go on my normal rant about doe electric grease for the plug tip and I even put a light coating on the coil pack where it pushes into the block. Also Anti-Sieze for the plug threads. Especially if you are waiting until the 60K mark before replacing again. I usually replace at 50K and one of the major reasons is fairly simple. I don’t want to risk breaking a plug that has been installed for 100K miles or longer breaking during removal. If it breaks the electrode and you still are able to get the anchor nut that is don’t but if it breaks below that in the threads.....NOT SO FINE!!

Hi Joy, I don't have a 2011 and that is a different generation of GS from mine, so I couldn't tell you if thats normal or not. Sorry! I think Lexus also recommends an oil change, cabin filter, and air filter at 60k.

No, IS250 uses a different engine. Sorry!

Is it vital that you use a torque wrench to tighten the plugs? Can I just hand tighten?

No. Just be smart when you tighten them. Don't use a ratchet with a huge amount of leverage, otherwise you could run the risk of stripping out the spark plug threads if you over-tighten it.

My rule is tighten with the ratchet until you feel some resistance, then give it another wuarter turn and no more to lock down.
