I've seen from many sources that you can use either or so it shouldn't be affected on what you use as long as you just use 1 fluid and not mix it. Plus the owners manual itself calls for atf4 in a np231. If you have other transfer cases that have a clutch inside for either AWD or part time 4x4 it may call for a friction additive. So to be totally sure, take a look at your owner's manual and know what type of transfer case you have.
@@OutJeeping I didn't get an owners manual with my jeep :( I know it has AWD, and part time AWD. Not sure what type it is, however I've read that all XJS came with the Japanese transmission, not Chrysler.
@@Ibanezish If its an XJ it has 4wd not AWD like some grand cherokees do. In that case for a XJ it either came with a np231 or np242 and can be confirmed by looking at the tag on it under the jeep. Either way you are find to run either atf+4 or dexron3 for either transfer case type.
