I must have some kind of mental problems because i've been playing for 3 years and changing strings still gives me anxiety. I like this tutorial a lot!
Thank you! I snapped a string on my guitar a looooong while ago and was put off by the idea of having to change it. Didn't think I could do it properly. I've watched tons of tutorials and this is easily the best to understand. Not only did I change the one string but I changed them all with no problem.
I've had my fender acoustic for about 5 years. I've watched other videos on how to restring an acoustic and most of the times I would screw it up. After I stumbled upon this video, I went out and got a set of strings and they came out perfect! Thank you. And thanks for those other videos on how to play different songs. I can't wait for my fingers to toughen up again after not picking up my acoustic for months! Looking forward to more videos!
9 years into playing guitar and still quite a beginner. I have to look up a video every time I change strings and this is the first time I've seen this method. Why on earth doesn't everyone teach this method??? This is absolutely the easiest way to change the strings I've ever seen. I saved this video to my favorites so I can use this every time. Thank you. Love the NZ accent. Let the pig do the work. :D
I've seen other ways people shown how to put the strings around the tuning pegs, but it seemed difficult for a beginner like me. This way of wrapping the strings around the tuning pegs and putting the string over through the hole is a much simpler way of putting the strings on the tuning machines for me. Thank you, I actually put a whole set of string on and it's actually in tune. Thanks, subscribed.
I’ve watched several videos now of how to change strings and yours is by far the best; great explanations as you are actually changing the strings, showing what to do at a slow pace so one can actually follow what you are doing, the beautiful clarity of the video resolution, not talking down to those of us who are watching this to learn, etc. Thank you!
This is the most detailed explanation that I've ever seen. Thank you SOO much as I'm about to change my own Strings for the first time. Wish me luck😱 Subscribed😃 Update: 15/7/18 - I changed my own strings last night for the first time following your method only difference was that I changed them 2 strings at a time starting from the thickest ones as I wasn't comfortable removing ALL at once. Everything went well and NO broken strings. I'm so 'Chuffed' that I was finally able to do it all by myself being a 'noob' Thank you so much for your Tutorials & God Bless 🙋🎸
Hi, just wanted to say I decided to start playing the 42 year old guitar my dad bought me for Christmas in 1975. I broke the high E string and with your awesome instructions, wound the new string on and had it tuned in 5 minutes. I plan on watching more of your videos as I learn. Thanks from the USA. :)
Absolutely admire this video!! Thanks for your help. I have been with out my guitar for about 3 months because I didn't know how to restring the guitar. And then I thought maybe I can look on youtube. And hear your video was thank you so much..
Thank you. I've been playing for 2 years now and always fumbled with re-stringing. I put it off as long as possible because I never seemed to do it easily. I just tried this method and it was a breeze!
Straight up THE BEST video for changing guitar strings, I'm still not perfect but I'm a hell of a lot better at it than I have been for the past 2.5 years. Thank you!
Finally, a tutorial that showed me how to get the strings tight and bright just as they were when I purchased my Martin years ago. Thanks Mate! This made all the difference!
A good way to remember - but, don't forget you may have to take 'String Gauge' into consideration as well. The Tutor in his demo was using what looked like very 'Light Gauge' Strings.
This works guys. Followed his instructions and absolutely no problems. Tuned and re-tuned a bit, but that's normal when applying new strings. Mark The Guitar Guy is a natural teacher. Really patient, really good at explaining things. And the close ups throughout were a big help in understanding the whole process. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video with us.
All of the RU-vid tutorials I have seen for changing the strings out, this is the only one that I have seen done the correct way. All the guitar shops in the area where I live change them this way. I'm not saying the others are wrong but this seems the most efficient and neat way to change them. Friends that have strung their guitars themselves using other methods have have big knotted balle of string around the peg and are constantly tuning the guitar. Good on ya!
I followed another youtube guide that cut the strings first and now I have broken the 6th string. This is by far the best way to re-string an acoustic. Thank you.
Before I came to this video I watched 9-10 videos of utter confusion of different techniques and what strings to change and whatnot. Watched this video, and my guitar now has brand new strings. You’ve got yourself a loyal subscriber
thank you Mark, acoustic guitar was all greek to me,a friend of mine took his guitar to me and asked to do some maintenance and restring for it,all my life i did was electric guitars whoo,no clue of acoustics what so ever, this vid showed me how to do it,you`re the man! thanks!
After watching several different videos I noticed that you are the only one that wraps the string around the pin before putting it through the hole thus avoiding the sharp bend that occurs when you put the string directly into the hole before wrapping around the pin. Seems to me you'd avoid breaking a lot more strings with this method. Thanks a bunch!!. John T.
I recall after watching scads of videos you made one that I could understand and relate to. I just shared this to a group I’m in that someone was really frustrated. I really like your no BS instructions and close up filming.
+Warm Donuts Its at 1:00 am where i am and im going nuts puttin in the strings. I just dont see how the strings would sustain well if the looping is very basic
+George Torres I'm always nervous when putting on strings. my hands are always sweating all over the place. But i followed this guys instructions to the teeth and everything went well. My guitar sounds awesome.
Your video is the best! Tried watching other videos and this one is by far the easiest to understand. You taught me a skill I can use for a lifetime, I am forever grateful.
Thanks, Mark! this is the best demonstration in my book, changed my upper E first time no worries, tuned it up, sounds great. What some of the other videos lack are close-ups where you can actually see the "fiddly bits"
i did it! :D holy shit, i this was a challenge x,D first time i did this.... mistake after mistake... but i managed to do it in the end! felt so good! thank you so much! YOU SAVED MY WEEKEND!
Amazing tutorial. I allways gave my guitar to local music shop to change strings, but this time i did it by my self and thanks to this video, i did it as good as music shop did!
This is the way I've been changing my strings for years. I use the same technique on mandolin and banjo too. I just wanted to see how you snip them at the end. Good video
Thank you so much for this video, my poor guitar hasn't been played for over a year and desperately needed new strings, I was recommended the exact same strings you used in this video, and I am so happy with the sound! Thanks again, I needed to refresh my memory on how to restring my guitar, and it turned out perfect :)
I just changed my guitar strings for the first time... and it surprisingly went super good!! Thank you so much for the informative video!!! It made it super easy for a beginner and I wish everyone else luck!!!
50+years playing 12-8-6-5 string music makers and this is the best technique I have worked with yet. I know Martin instructs to kink the string once wrapped. A kink is the weak link with the tension of each string. I just restrung a fifty year old Vox twelve string acoustic/electric Dred and actually enjoyed the time. I have used this method for a year on all my string instruments.Well done, well done.
Thank you sooooo much! I just changed my first full set of strings with no problem. Couldn't have done it without you! Just letting you know how much people like me appreciate people like you taking the time to share their time & knowledge with others! Thanks Again :-)
I had my first acoustic guitar two days ago and while i was trying to tune it (for 2 hours) with the help of an online tuner: the second string snapped. I was just curious if this type of thing happened to other people being very new to playing a guitar or when you get a new guitar?
guitar strings snap from age, from having too much tension, or when the nut or saddle are not smooth. they should not snap on a new guitar because its new.
+tomjohnable it's also possible you put too much tension on the string when you were tuning it (it happened to me too), just make sure you don't make the string too tight while tuning it
+tomjohnable All that happened was you tightened the string too much because you are new to tuning and might have been an octave higher than you thought you were. If you are using an online tuner, loosen your strings quite a bit below the desired note, then tune up to the desired note, that way, you will never exceed the range of tension the string was designed to withstand. I would really recommend buying an electronic tuner as soon as possible, they can be had for very cheap, and you will become much more confident with tuning. (You will be able to tune in less than a minute once u are more experienced.)
Thank you everyone for your help. Using an online website to help me tune my guitar was not the best choice lol. I purchased a tuner at a guitar shop and he showed me how to use it. I've now been able to successfully tune my guitar with it. Thanks ☺
Hey Mark....watched this video back in 2014....still use this (correct) technique to change the strings till this date... Great video mate and Keep on Rockin' 🤘🏼
Ace vid and tips, thanks. Only thing I would change is that when you do the side with the thin strings, start with the high E and work back to the G, otherwise it's fiddly as hell trying to thread the B, as it keeps getting tripped-up alongside the coarser G.
It's been a while since I saw this video because I have taken it to heart by now, but since I started using this method I haven't busted a single string. Zero! Just did a string change and it went off without a hitch as always. THANK YOU!
+xMasterxRazorx There are more approaches for locking the string, there is nothing wrong with threading after u put string through the hole. Meaby later you will notice, threading after is much more common. Later you will also learn some tricks for locking strings to add stability and reduce buzz.
Threading first is a bad idea he might not have kinked the E to G strings but the first two had loops which as tightened create weak spots. It's just laziness, put the end through the hole and wind wind wind... I use my fingers amazing isn't it ! I've been playing guitar for 30 years playing and have NEVER snapped a string on tuning!
Thanks for a great video. I am just beginning on guitar, playing a guitar that has been collecting dust for 7 or 8 years. Changing the strings made a world of difference in playability and tone. Your video made it extremely easy. Thanks!
I've only been playing and had my guitar for 3 days, I was tuning my high E string, when it snapped way before being in pitch... the snap occurred at the tuning post so now I'm afraid to re-string it. :(
This is now how i put my strings on. Thank-you so much for making changing strings a lot less stressful sir. Stay safe and be well from Newfoundland Canada .
Pro tip: bridge pins are fitted to each hole... by dumping them in a pile you mixed them up, that's why they are not nice and flush anymore. The first time I change string on a guitar I mark the pins with a Sharpie so I never mix them up.
All I can say is THANK YOU! Because of this video and the technique that you show here, I was able to change my strings for the first time. Thank you sir!
Thanks for being so thorough and actually slowing down on the critical parts, unlike other videos. Subbed and liked just for this video alone, saved me ton of frustration.
Great video! I've only changed the strings a few times and each time have left blood behind on the head of the guitar. Can't wait to try your way. Thanks again!
Tom Wilson I was told to do the same thing. But I was also told to use cleaner on the fretboard. You can’t really clean the fretboard with the strings in the way.
