My friend Frank used to be a tire guy, and he told me he could do this by hand.. but still, it was impressive to see him remove and replace a tire in five minutes flat!
I know tire shops fuuuuuuuuuck around. Seems like they make coffee, smoke , play on the phone, stare at you at the counter but don’t ask to help you. Sometimes its like going to the DMV, or buying a care. Just pisses you off
@@Mooreman50 🤣 I hear you but this isn't about shops...Some shops are good and some are corrupt, just like any other trade... I only posted this because I was so was so impressed by how fast Frank was able to do it. The drop center thing is just an added bonus for anyone who didn't already know, but Frank does have some skills, and 230 pounds, behind that hammer. He makes it look easier than it really is. ...
What’s going on guys!? It’s your boy here and today I’m gonna show you how to remove a tire with simple hand tools. Make sure to like and subscribe! Proceeds to show video of car parked in driveway, drive to the store, walk in store, make observations, look at irrelevant items for video, buys tire(s). Goes home, tutorial on how to jack up car, remove tire. Insert ad here - Put wheel on cardboard or towel or some other softer-than-ground surface FINALLY begins to remove tire from rim. Explain why you should put wheel on softer surface, and then goes on to give a horrible, lack of information tutorial on how to actually remove the damn thing. Finally finish off on plans for next video, content, w/e. 20 minute long video finally ends with ANOTHER reminder to like and subscribe.
Takes one hour to change a tire at a shop with tons of equipment and tools, when this guy only used tire irons, hammer and feet less than 6min. Well done my man
It takes time to change a tire because they gotta prep everything they gotta lift the car remove the tire leak the air switch the tire and then they balance the tires and balancing the tires take time depending on the weights they use either hammer type or the sticky type of weights
If it's steel rims that are clean a set of four can be done on a properly functioning machine well under 10 minutes easily. But the industry trend is lower profile tires that would make it difficult to do on an older standard machine let alone the way it's done in the video. Not to mention that a tire is not designed to be taken off the rim with a direct impact like that. Hitting it like that can easily damage the sidewall and potentially lead to a side-wall blowout.
@@josiahr1375 interesting point re sidewall damage. I never heard that before. Not sure if you are correct but possibly. Maybe on some low pros. In the industry (when you change a tire on the side of the road) one doesn't have the luxury of a tire mount machine close by. If you don't have a mounted replacement in your truck bed your choice is to use a duckbill hammer or slide hammer. Duckbill is lighter, faster, easier. I didn't invent the process but learned from highly trained union pipeline tire masters. And every single one uses a duckbill hammer. Never hurt or in anyway damaged a sidewall that wasn't already destroyed by the idiot driver too slow to pull over or didn't check his/her rigs tires before hitting the road. However I'm talking about industrial and commercial grade tires. Not some pos lo pro
Finally the only video I have been able to find that actually tells you how to change a tire, every other video just tells you how to swap an entire wheel.
Hi all, Thanks to my friend Jim for posting. It's actually much easier than how I make it look. I haven't done this for a living for @ 12 years. I used to do this day in and day out on typically much larger vehicles. It is really a lot of fun but extremely physical. And FOR SURE, everyone you change a tire for, on the side of the road or at a jobsite, without question, is totally blown away AND stoked. Made my day every day. Thanks Jim for posting the video.
Lol, yup, he definitely makes it look easier than it is! When Frank first told me me he could do a tire "in a minute", I figured it was just bar talk. But then I saw how fast he removed that first tire and I knew I had to film the rest of the operation.
heheheh, yup! My cousin and I spent an hour trying to change a tire once. We didn't have the right tools, and barely knew what we were doing, but we eventually got it done ;)
Please DO NOT attempt without proper preparation. This technique requires at least one shot of whiskey chased with a 'light' beer of your choice - Bud or Miller will work just fine.
My father and I used to do this in the basement of our house , 2 or3 big bars , a 12 lb . Sledge hammer but we used to pour marvel mystery oil on the bead , pops gone I'm 72 now ,was about 10 back then but I'll still never forget it. By the way the tires were ten hundred / twenty truck tires.
10.00-20s is a nice sized tube tire. You had lock rings to deal with too. Never used the mystery oil, always some vegetable based soap. Thanks for watching
When I was maybe 19YO I had a little experience changing car tires on a machine. I was looking for work and saw an add for tire changer. I went to check it out and it was all big truck tires. Guy said here, watch this as he went to work on a big ass split rim with a honking big hammer. I noped the fuck out of there before he finished getting the old tire off. Even with these small tires, you are far more ambitious than I have ever been. Impressive.
I used to fix tires (mostly for large trucks and equipment), some car tires... a long, long time ago. Part of what makes this job easy is the tire spoons (pry bars) and hammer/wedge. You can improvise with other tools and it will take a little longer, but the techniques here are the biggies. Nicely done.
And lubricant … that helps tremendously. I maintain farm equipment, trucks, tractors, hay trailers, balers, implements, all manner of yard equipment … this is the way to get er done !!
My grandfather showed me that trick but he used Starter fluid to inflate the tire. Good old fashion tricks that's why I always say nothing beats a classic.
They do that in tire shops as well...I figured it was because they change the valves in the wheels they work on in case they are worn and may have a leak
Every time I change a tire I watch this same video before I do it, so it refreshes my memory. Best easy straight to the point tutorial👏👏👏👏👏.Thank you Frank all the way from Hawaii 🤙🏽
I was blown away by how quick Frank did this, even with everything at hand. He is obviously a strong man to make it look so easy. Frank said, "...everyone you change a tire for, on the side of the road or at a jobsite, without question, is totally blown away AND stoked." Mate, if you did that for me on the side of the road, I too would be so impressed and appreciated; I would actually get your address to send you a present later. Frank, stopping to help others in trouble, rather than driving by, shows you to be a good and decent person. Hope life goes easy for you, best wishes, from someone that was broken down miles from home and being helped by another person that knew what to do; I was very appreciative as my family were on a day out and stranded.
We live in Germany with American cars which means we can't take them to local repair shops for maintenance. I've had to learn to do all of the repairs for our cars myself. A few weeks ago, I changed out the starter for one of them in our driveway. This is an AWESOME video to add to my skillset over here. I'm gonna order some tire bars and a hammer and practice this hopefully until I can do it like you did in this video. Thanks a million for posting!!
Do shops just not want to deal with it? Or just not many shops that will? B/c there's nothing inherently different about working on an American vs German car. Or any car really. Some socialized tools here & there but usually nothing crazy. If you can get it a shop definitely can. The big thing nowadays is there scan & programming tools. But again, if can you do it in your driveway a shop shouldn't have any trouble at all. Seems like a shop could make a pretty good living working on any car other shops turn away, and all with very little investment. I just can't imagine every shop turning away money like that. If I worked on BMW all day, everyday, I'd certainly charge more for the occasional Chevy to do the same job just b/c of the headache & extra time involved. If you have a steady stream of car X you might be able to get 2 cars in & out in the time it takes for car Y, so it's definitely a business decision. But damn I'd hate turning customers away. Especially on the easier stuff. But we also have supposed specialists here in the US. But some are, and others are just blowing smoke trying to attract customers. At any rate, good on you for learning to do the work yourself. It certainly provides some satisfaction not being beholden to a shop for every repair!!
Oh, and if someone is thinking about balancing out with balancing beads, no liquid (soapy water) in the inner tire, because the beads will stick together. I learned that the hard way when notice the vibration. Again, thank you!
Thank you! I was trying to change my 13" rims for a pop-up camper...my friend's tire machine wouldn't receive such a small rim. This worked! Thank you for showing it!
The skill and experience involved in this video inmediately becomes evident when you try to do this yourself for the first time. I also have a feeling guys who work in tire shops doing this all day are tough as nails!
Yeah S K, Frank definitely makes it look a little easier than it really is! ... And it helps if you weigh in at 240 too! But Frank is retired from that business... he only does it for his own car, or for friends.
Absolutely,.. and try doing it without those bars and hammer made just for doing tires... And no soapy water.. 🤔 Hmmm I do have some bottled water and some cheap dish soap and laundry detergent in my car.. so now🧐 if I only had that hammer and 2 bars just like those.. I'd be in business 🤣
an 8 year old video yet still very entertaining and informative to watch. you sir is someone who id like to drink a beer with while doing this kind of work. my hats off to you sir 🫡🤙
Ha, I still have to. I can see this guy do it but I sure can't mimic him. I got the first side off but I'm damned if I can get the second side, it just simply won't go, 'drop center' or otherwise, and no amount of cursing and swearing will move it either!
@@SeriousSchitt , lol, it helps a lot if you weigh in @230 too.... 230 lbs helps release the bead easily, once you break it... But leverage and momentum can move the world!
Damn dude. We all need a friend with super powers like Frank. I own a Harbor freight changer and balancer and still haven't opened them up in two years--still paying the auto shopsl
It was a lot more physical than the lazy dude with a machine tho... They take their time because they get paid by the hour and not by the tire.. like the guy who actually owns the tire shop gets paid... If the actual owner of the shop had to do a tire himself... He'd do it faster with the machine because he's working by the hour then... And he's paying himself 🤣so he's gonna work faster 👀
Change many tires?! Holyyyy that's some skill, thanks for explaining and making it look easy enough for me to take on, I'm sure I won't have near as much gusto and grace... Thanks for the video, cheers!!
Straight up the best video on this subject in existence. I used it years ago, and I referred back to it today! Job done in the Arizona heat. Wouldn't have made it without that very basic tip!
Holy $hi+ dude, made that look so freaking easy. I'm about to do my own tires and now I can say with all honesty that this is the gold standard for instructional videos on how to do it by hand (which is how I'm going to have to do it). Mad props, thumbs up, will be sharing this vid with everyone, thanks man.
Just wanna say I was fighting mounting tire back on until I noticed that you stepped on the rim in the middle and out your body weight on it and that's what I did and it work great thanks a lot!
Ok I have to say thank you very much for maken this video ,I keep rewatching this video when I have to manually change my tires and has actually saved my butt from haven to leave my truck on the side the road thank you very very much
Five minutes. Lol. It takes at least ten minutes if not longer with a machine. I'm gonna try this today with my new rims and tires. Now I know about the drop centre as well. Thank you very much for your video. God bless.
That's perfected through experience and technique. Everything in life is, but the problem, there are several thousands things in life that require experience and technique and there is only so much time to pick the ones you want to be good at. He definitively has tire removal in his game.
I enjoyed watching your beast mode approach! I used the service jack approach to pull a light truck tire off a rim. Where it was mounted for like 100 years give or take 10. The drop-center trick is the fun take-a-way from your great clip. Thanks for sharing!
I did this last week in my driveway for the first time ever. 17 inch SUV rim. Took me 45 minutes and it kicked my ass. Afterwards I watched a RU-vid video and got it down to just over 30. I highly recommend using LOTS of whatever you're going to use as tire lube. My last time I got it down to 17min
heheheheh, skill makes anything look easy bro, but the knowledge helps too... (the part @ 0:16, about the "drop center") And it helps to weigh in at 240 too ;) I thought I was doing pretty good when I could change a motorcycle tire in under an hour.. But, like I said in the vid, I remember Frank "saying" it was easy, but I never saw it done that fast by hand... I didn't even believe him until I saw him remove the first tire (the one that went on this rim), and It was impressive! That's why I filmed it.
“Sometimes you’ve got to give it a little love and affection” 🤣🤣🤣!! Thank you buddy, from me here in Australia. I’ve been trying to get a rock solid tyre off of a 45 year old Ford. Even resorted to cutting it with an angle grinder Just started a nasty, smoky fire. 🔥 😷. I need to get some tools like yours; especially that wonderful hammer/axe thing. Subscribed 👍
LOL! I tried cutting the tire off once myself... and it didn't work too good for me either! That hammer is called a "Duck Bill", and Frank makes it look easier than it actually is, but it's an effective tool in the right hands. ...And even those crowbars are made specifically for doing tires... they have a little "nub" on them, to grab the rim... Watch closely on the first 3-4 moves that Frank makes with those crowbars; how he uses one over the other, and then he uses the side of his shin to hold it for the final move... He makes it look so easy, but there's a nuance to it
I'll say it! DAM THIS GUY IS FREAKIN AWESOME! - Jacksonville Florida, every tire place you go, and I mean EVERY TIRE PLACE, they charge between $270 (40,000 mile tires) and $450-$500 (60,000 to 80,000 mile tire) for 4 brand new tire replacement. It's ridiculous. After 10 years of this crap, I got sick and tired and went to a U-pull-it and bought 2 used tires for $25 each and thanks to this video, I will put them on the front of my car. The back tires have fair tread so I only needed to replace the front 2. I just saved over $200 on replacing my front two tires. About 5 years ago I spent $270 on 2 brand new tires (they are now on the back of my car) and today, thanks to this video, I replaced my front 2 tires for $50 bucks. Got to love it. Eastcoast tire companies continue to RIP people off and this is what you get. I had worn tread on the left side of my tire and when it got a flat they refused to repair the flat saying that I needed to replace the tire. And my wife used fix-a-flat to repair fairly new tire and they said she ruined the tire. 4 tire places would not touch the tire because of fix-a-flat claiming it ruined the tire. I WILL NEVER USE A LOCAL TIRE COMPANY for my vehicle and my wife's vehicle on the Eastcoast ever again! SAVE YOUR MONEY FOLKS, watch this video and start replacing your own tires. IT WILL SAVE YOU $$$ HUNDREDS. *SUBSCRIBED!*
haha, right on Mike, I was amazed when I saw how fast Frank removed that replacement tire from the damaged rim.. So I said "wait, we gotta film this!"... By the time I got my phone up and recording, Frank was ready to Rock!... He had about 5 or 10 seconds to prepare his spiel at the beginning... it was 100% "off the cuff". But Frank used to do this as a profession, so he makes it look much easier than in actually is... There's definitely skill involved... I'm glad to hear it worked for you, more power to ya!
DUDE! I had to change one of my truck tires today. I was too cheap to pay the local tire place. Your suggestion of using the drop center really came in handy. Not knowing this, I was trying to give it a go from the other side; didn’t happen. I did a mulligan and started over. Within 15 minutes, I had the new tire on! Thank you so much!
That was pretty amazing.....And this is from a guy who use to change tires at my fathers shop back in the day.....But you should still balance that tire buddy.......Lolll
My dad let me try this with our truck. This guy, and my dad, make it look super easy, but they both had over a decade of practice. If I did this day in and out, I'd quit within 2 days, but at least now I know how to do it, another thing I don't have to take my car to a shop for
You are skilled! I have the upmost respect for mounting tires by hand. My cousin use to do this, and then he'd use a foot pump to set the beads and seat/inflate with a bicycle pump.
Thank you for your video. I was trying to put the tire on the wrong side of the rim. Now I know better. Took me 48 min to repair & replace tire. I never would have done it without your help.
If you look at the base of older upright ratcheting bumper jacks, you will see that one side has a curved edge and one is straight. That curve is there to use for breaking the bead off of the wheel. By p[lacing it into the bead area and jacking up the weight of the car onto it. There are plenty of beads that will not come loose by simple pounding on them. Then the standard 18 inch lug bar was used to remove the tire from the wheel. I had to do this to graduate HS advanced auto shop. Using only the tools provided with the car.
He is a RU-vid star ,I haven't seen one of these videos in a while, and I thought I was going to have to search for this one but it was the first one, the best is always first on RU-vid 😉👍
Very Impressive that was extra fast I've changed them that way a few times myself and seen other people do it but never that fast you got it down too a science you sure know what your doing like someone else said on here most shops can't do it that fast even with all their fancy equipment.
haha, right on Low Tag, and thank YOU! When I saw how fast my friend Frank removed that other tire (not shown), that's when I said "wait, we gotta film this".... And as soon as I could get the vid working on my phone, Frank just ran with that ball! ...Frank used to be a professional at this, and he always said how "easy" it is to do "a little car tire"... But that was over a few beers, so I figured there might be some exaggerating... But apparently, he wasn't even exaggerating at all ;) ... but, with that said, it's not really as easy as he makes it look... And it does help if you weigh in at 235 too.
As I said I was trying to change my tires and I did not have the same skill or luck that you, 1st big difficulty was to undo the seal I tried everything and could not, had to go to a workshop to get the tires off the wheels hahahah (even using lubricants) Note: even the machine had difficulty undoing the seal actually the boy had to take off all the way around the tires Then I thought the rest is the easiest, put the new tires on the rims, put the lubricant and put the first rim but on the 2nd it was impossible almost died of so much wear I had and without strength, half went relatively easy on both tires but then started the hard part and as hard as I tried I couldn't, I had to go the other day with the tires more or less mounted in the trunk of my other car in the workshop to assemble me the rest (which was the same thing as the machine). butter the bread super easy). Note: none of the workshop visits (kwik Fit Leominster UK) was charged to me (I gave some money for the work). My advice if you don't have money to trade is to wait until you have money or ask someone who knows how to do it, because it was extremely exhausting and demotivating, I saw several videos here on youtube and it seems easy but believe me it is NOT
Man I need to get my hands on those tools. I gotta swap some tires on my truck. The local shop near me said they would do it for 150 bucks. I think it would be worth my wild to just buy the tools and do it my self
OTC tools make a Nice Tire Hammer now (OTC 5789 )..5 pound tire hammer and a truck tire hammer 10 pound... Very easy to use like the KenTool....... Nice video
that was very quick. I remember when I was a teenager it taking me and some friends an hour easy to do what he just did in 3 mins. But I had no instruction. I knew what I wanted and needed to do but didn't know how lol
heheheheh, me and my cousin spent an hour doing this once too... ;) But Frank is an old pro... when he first told me how easy it is, I didn't believe him . I thought it was "bar talk"... But he did have the right tools, and he knew how to use em. . And it helps to weigh in at about 240 too ;)
