In this video, we show you how to change your rear main seal. When this seal goes bad, it can cause oil to start leaking out from the back of the engine, and has to be replaced.
You can now get your very own budget boosting window sticker! Click the link below and you will be taken to our eBay page!

When putting mine in I used the old seal over the top of the new one to hit against so I didn't damage the new one, getting them started can be a pain though that's the trouble when they have a metal rim, the smaller ones in the timing side slip in much easier as they have a rubber rim so they push in with the fingers, then use a socket so the seal bottoms out correctly.

I usually use a rusty hatchet to get my rear main seals. The rustier the better and you just beat that fckr into place. If that doesnt work, I hook up the cherry picker to the water pump, hoist it up and drop the engine onto the butt of the crank full force. That usually does the trick.

Ryan_Greenwalt thats the worst advice I've ever heard. DO NOT TRY THIS!! The last thing you want to do is mess up your hatchet. You be much better off using a torch to melt it out and a little starter fluid to lube it up.

something to look for, besides the rear main seal leak, which was pretty obvious o that one, is a side seal leak, at least on an L-28 engine. with such a bad main seal leak it could conceal a side seal leak. The side seal is built in to the rear bearing block, seals the bearing cap to the block. So if you have a persistent oil leak and go this far, take a hard look a the side seal (it will be a seam just below and to the right of the rear main bearing seal).

Such an inexpensive part and such an easy install, all the labor is in removing the engine...sort of kick in the nuts, all the hours it takes to pull out the motor and it literally takes 20 min to install the seal.

Change that big freeze plug in the back of the motor if it's never been changed. Mine looked solid, no rust or signs of leakage but after i pulled it out i found a small rusty hole that was almost all the way thru Also, automatic trans people, make sure you put the flex plate back on in the right direction. Yes, you can put it on backwards.

hey I'm going to have to work on my 2000 Nissan Pathfinder and I think its the same seal that needs to be changed but I've never done that kind of repair before so I was wanting to know if u have a video taking a transmission out of a 4x4
@budgetboosting
@budgetboosting 7 лет назад
not yet but it is pretty straight forward. remove front/rear drive shafts, separate linkages, harnesses, speedo cables around transmission. If it is auto, have to remove bolts holding torque converter to flexplate, remove starter and trans bolts holding trans to engine, trans mounts, double check nothing is holding or connected to trans, get transmission jack, balance carefully and install safety strap so when lowering, trans does not fall down but gets lowered carefully. It is a lot of work, recommend a few friends helping out and much easier if have car lift and transmission jack.

Your premise is correct. However, missed a couple items and taught everyone who watched this a very bad habit. DO NOT IGNORE THESE STEPS: Make sure you clean extremely well the mating surfaces that contact the new seal prior to installing the new seal. Do NOT use used oil to lubricate the seal. Use NEW oil straight from the bottle. Without these steps the new seal won’t last as long and will leak. It’s the little steps that make the difference.

you forgot to check the crank surface for pitting, if pitted you would need a chamfered ring to go over the crank to prevent the new seal from leaking.

.how hard is it to do a motor swap in a saab 9-3. I have some mechanical experience but this would be my 1st time trying to swap and engine out. What advice would you recommend for me?.. and if you had to pay a mechanic to do it what would be the max price you would be willing to pay a mechanic?
@kylejcool
@kylejcool 5 лет назад
I've swapped two engines, A bmw 328 and a 8 cyl Chevy, both RWD, I basically did the same thing. first, used color coded duct tape and took pictures to mark all connections to where they go. pulled the old engine out from the top using a cherry picker with the trans still attached. Prepped the new engine, attached the tran using dollies. drop it in, attach driveshaft then just re connecting it. Pretty much what you could do with any engine

question, can too much oil in a car cause damage to this main seal?
@budgetboosting
@budgetboosting 8 лет назад
+Andy Panda Yes, oil underpressure especially when over filled will find the easiest place to relieve pressure, the rear main seal is one of them.
@theforgottenarmada
@theforgottenarmada 8 лет назад
+Budget Boosting got it, thank you!
@roberttolhurst5155
@roberttolhurst5155 7 лет назад
Andy Panda Too much oil can actually cause the oil to lose pressure. The action of the crank shaft chopping through the oil will cause aeration, and then bubbles will get sucked up into the system, collapse and reduce pressure
