Every so often I would notice a clunky, bind up as if there was worn out diff bushes (Common in Ford Territory's and Falcon's) - but a friend suggested that I change the transfer case fluid as they has a similar issue in their Range Rover Sport (Also a ZF transmission) - later I discovered that this is very common in a lot of transfer case AWD type vehicles (Not most Audi/Subaru etc types).

Mate you are a legend! 208,000 km on our 2015 and having all the same symptoms you so eloquently explained - haha. Trying to explain that series of noises and grinds / crunches to the mechanics was a losing battle to the point I feel they thought I was imagining it. Anyway, just did the change and took her around the block for 10 minutes......wow! Everything was smooth and the whole vehicle seems so much quieter. That diff wobble you explained to me was a constant knocking noise when going over little bumps and that also seems to have completely gone. Will take it out later today on the motor way where cruise control would make it worse and coming down hill or down a bridge would cause what felt like something was constantly trying to lock up. I also got the diff oils which I will do later this week. Cheers bud!

Not needing a jack was a pleasure the Jimny provided also! A tip I had from the Jimny was to loosen the fill plugs first, then if the drain plug rounded off or there was something else causing issue with the drain plug (lost, snapped etc)you wouldn’t find yourself with a hole you couldn’t fill… ie you could syphon out from fill plug or something…. It’s early… that actual rationale eludes be right now haha.

Thanks for the video brother. Huge help and the old territory is running sweet as a nut. Just for those of us that have a AWD the fill plugs on the engine side of the Transfer case, the plugs in the same spot just the front side of it.

Thanks so much for putting up this video, and the symptoms, that I have struggled to explain. I had the CV joints checked, and the Drive shaft replaced ( The center bearing and rubber was shot ) I have just changed the oil in the Transfer case, and took the car for a drive, around roundabouts, and car parking, hard lock reverse, and forward etc from stop signs etc. All I can say is wow. Thank you so much !!! The service schedule recommends to replace the transfer case fluid every 150k, mine was “jumpy” when I bought the car at 132k, and I have just changed it at 145k. My big test will be when backing the caravan, up a slight incline. The other thing that I have noticed in the service schedule is to change the oil in the front and rear axle (diff) which I will do next, as it recommended for every 60k or 24 months under severe or unusual conditions. I think that the previous owner did quite a bit of towing, so I will change the oil in the Diffs this week. Have you changed the oil in your front and rear diffs? My 2015, AWD, has a 10mm hex plug in the rear diff, not a 30mm socket as shown on a RU-vid video.

Late to comment, but I had a crack at just topping up my rear diff today just to see how hard it was before I drain it and do a full re-fill. It was really quite simple, main thing I can suggest is remove the spare wheel and the rack it sits in to get better access. It took nearly half a litre and feels much better even with just a top up, so I'm sure it'll be even better after a full drain and refill. Confirming you are correct, the full plug is a 10mm Allen/hex key. My car is a 2012 AWD Diesel and I used the Nulon 80W-140W heavy duty diff oil in the squeeze pack. Good luck!

Isn't it fun working on the floor in your garage!? Thankfully that looks pretty easy to do. You need a car scissor lift......as do I 😂

They say... Never drain until you've successfully removed the fill plug.. Your were fortunate..

Yes I checked that before doing this, didn’t include or call it out in the video as it’s pretty standard practise. But I should have!

Mine only took about 500ml before starting to flow out the fill plug(06 turbo so fill and drain are on opposite sides). Am I doing something wrong or should I leave it for a bit to drain through and try again?

After having a bit of a look around - found that the ZF6 speed version in the 06 Territory Turbo only takes 500ml as it’s service capacity - also uses the same oil according to the penrite website. I already replied to your comment on the page, but just incase someone else stumbled across this on YT 😎 here it is.
