• Follow Up to Charging ...
In this video I charge the air conditioning system in my 1996 Ford F-150 XLT with a 5.0 L V-8. This process will be similar on all 1980 through 1996 F-150's that either came factory with R-134a refrigerant or has been retrofitted over to R-134a from R-12. Depending on the engine the system hoses may be routed a little differantly but will be very similar.
CAUTION Always wear safety glasses and gloves when doing A/C repair. Also before you do this along with any other A/C repair, the system should be empty and free of refrigerant. If it does contain refrigerant, let a local auto garage use a recovery machine to recycle the old refrigerant. Venting refrigerant into the air and atmosphere is illegal!

You must remember to purge your lines letting the Freon fill the hoses on your gages before releasing it into unit or you will ley the air inside of your hoses into unit.

One of the best videos, if not the best for this series of trucks. Covering every aspect can be difficult, and "arm chair quarterbacking" your video is not fair for someone to do to you. You gave me everything I needed to fill in my gaps of understanding and that is what I needed. Thank you very much for taking the time to help those like me who needed some solid understanding of these trucks. You are a good man! And to all the "you didn't purge the the Freon hose", well DUH! Like we ALL did not know that one!

only question I have is why not add oil once you vacuum it down, I was always told if you pull it down to get the moisture out you are also pulling oil and it is smart to add it back. THe rest is right on point. thanks

I usually dumped a 12 oz can of liquid freon on the high side. After that, the compressor kicks on immediately, then I add gas refrigerant to the low side. Easy, peasy.

Hi, will this fix the AC blowing hot air with it is running? or will there a Moe common underline problem at play . Thanks.
@MikesGarage96
@MikesGarage96 6 лет назад
You will have to hook up a set of manifold gauges to diagnose the problem. If the system is completely empty of Freon then you have a leak somewhere. I suggest replacing the ac service ports valve cores if the system is empty, before trying to charge the system. That’s a common place for leaks.

@MikesGarage96
@MikesGarage96 7 лет назад
+Leo Thomas Start with checking the low and high side pressures with a manifold gauge set. You can find charts online where the proper pressure should be according to the ambient temperature. There could be a blockage somewhere like in the orifice tube or it could be the compressor is just weak.

@MikesGarage96

You only need to add oil if you replace a major component like the compressor. If it was just a hose replaced, just pull a vacuum and charge. Too much oil in the system can blow the seals out of the compressor.

@@MikesGarage96 hey thanks brother for a reply, you just gained a subscriber for that man. Just bought a 1992 f150 and noticed the high and low side schrader seemed a lot cleaner in appearance. Looks like they did the conversion because like you said the fittings are bigger and exactly like my 2013 f250. Put a charge in with some of that canned stuff from autozone with a built in gauge. It was reading roughly 48 PSI when the can went empty but the ac went from warm to semi cool (far from cool/cold) hope they changed out the compressor oil when they converted it. Might just have a bad leak somewhere I guess. Anyway thanks again for the reply.
@MikesGarage96
@MikesGarage96 5 лет назад
Them gauges that comes on them tall cans tend to be inaccurate. It could very well still be low in Freon if your system was empty and you only put in that one tall can. Your truck should hold around 42 oz. roughly two tall cans or 3 1/2 regular 12oz cans. Good luck with your new truck!

Thanks for this. Helped me out a lot. The AC on my 94 hasn't worked in at least 10 years. Followed the procedure in the video and was shocked to find it blowing ice cold. Unfortunately, when I took the jumper off and plugged the connector back in, the compressor wouldn't cycle by itself and started blowing hot again. Jumpered the connector again, ice cold air. I'm looking at that low pressure switch as maybe being bad. These old Fords are still great trucks. I plan on keeping mine for as long as I can.

Awesome! Your year model probably came with R-12 refrigerant. If it hasn’t been retrofitted, you’ll have to buy a service port kit. It’ll come with new fittings that screw over the old R12 type. Just take the old valve stems out first.
