In this video I demonstrate the sleight of hand technique known as the center deal or middle deal. I also talk about it’s uses (or lack thereof) in card cheating and card magic.
NOTE:
This is NOT meant to be an instructional video on how to cheat at cards or on how to protect yourself from cheating. Don't watch this video and then try this stuff in a game or think you can’t be cheated. I make these videos for entertainment so that people can more deeply appreciate the craft and the art of sleight-of-hand. If you find this stuff interesting, go check out the work of people like Steve Forte, Jason England, Richard Turner, Darwin Ortiz, and Jason Ladanye. If you want to learn how to protect yourself at the card table, check out “Casino Game Protection,” “Poker Protection,” and “Gambling Protection Series” by Steve Forte and “Gambling Scams” by Darwin Ortiz.
ADDITIONAL INFO:
There's some fascinating history behind the center deal that I didn't go into in this video. I will probably cover that in a future video series. The maneuvers that nullify the cut are known as "shifts" and "hops." I didn't have time to go into any detail in this video. Marked cards are far more complex as a subject than I allude to, but there just wasn't time.
CREDITS:
I learned the center deal from Jason England’s DVD Foundations Volume 1. I have made some slight modifications for my hands, but the technique is more or less the same as what he teaches. I also learned the bottom deal and second deal from his videos (and from The Expert at the Card Table by S.W. Erdnase. If this stuff interests you, check out “Gambling Sleight of Hand” Volumes 1 and 2 by Steve Forte - they’re incredible. The double duke is inspired by Guy Hollingsworth’s “A Gambling Routine” published in “Drawing Room Deceptions,” Darwin Ortiz’s “The Ultimate Cardshark” published in “Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table,” and Andrew Wimhurst’s routines “The Wimhurst Poker Deal” and “The Return of the Ultimate Cardshark” published in “Down Under Deals.” The control to the bottom used is Ernest Earick's one-handed convincing control published in "By Forces Unseen." The explanations about the rationale behind the center deal, why it’s fascinating, why it’s useless, etc. is inspired by the work of Dai Vernon, Ricky Jay, Richard Turner, and Darwin Ortiz. Special thanks to my friend Mr. Z for additional guidance and information.
Special thanks to Darwin Ortiz and Ed Kwon for some background theory and constant inspiration.

@@DanielRoyMagic I have found that the best explanation of the center deal is in the Ross Bertrum book, Magic and Methods of Ross Bertrum. Dai Vernon posed for the photographs in this book. Again, "The Classics" And magicians saying something is useless is an old doge, to keep other magicians from Doing the move. T. Nelson Downs, and Louis Zegoni (see expert Card Technique, I think I spelled his last name wrong) (who I saw old movie footage of doing the center deal on a glass top table) Thanks to Jay Marshall, with Jack Pyle Chicago's Punch deck pro. They all considered the center deal one of the most useful of the dirty deals when used for magic.

Your technique is seamless, I can tell you've spent hours working on it. What I'm most impressed with is your ability to hold your break through all that. There are several times you move the deck where I can't tell how you're repositioning and not losing it. You're explanations are spot on as well. I hadn't considered the uses until you started talking about them. All around a great job, thank you!

Would be awesome if when you are showing tricks you could have 1 camera angle that is off in the corner that never cuts, as anytime someone watches a magic breakdown and then see's a cut it is like "okay well maybe they can do what they're saying but also they could have just cut and arranged the cards and then continued". Just food for thought! I can see you're doing a lot of what you say though, just would be that cherry on top!
