Test number 1, you consistently have to refill the radiator overflow but no fluids are under the vehicle.
@barbarasmith4560
@barbarasmith4560 3 года назад
My radiator overflow is always empty. I don't have any leaks on the ground. My car smokes some under the hood when you reve up the engine. Idk if it's oil or antifreeze I smell. I just bought this car in April. I dont drive it much but one shop told me it was a blown head gasket. After about 3 weeks of driving it it burned about 2 qts oil. My radiator was about 1/pitcher water low. One machanic came to my house and couldn't tell what was wrong.. but he made him a quick 20.00 smh!!
@teresiabrown9427
@teresiabrown9427 3 года назад
Yes Barbara your smelling both because they are mixing together and thats a sure sign of a blown head gasket the gasket is supposed to stop the fluids from mixing it will cause it to smoke a lot and overheat thats why you can't see a leak because their just mixing! I only know some things about cars from a long relationship with a mechanic!

I did all those tests and could not find my blown gasket - but the following test showed the problem - remove radiator cap and bring level into view - bring a cylinder u want to test to top dead center on ignition stroke [both valves closed] put compression test hose or extension [without check valve in it] into spark plug hole - attach shop air to supply shop air at 100 psi into cylinder on a warm engine - observe coolant in radiator for rise in level or bubbles.
@dbow4life666
@dbow4life666 4 года назад
Big indicators, milky substance like shown, and the antifreeze overflow container level rises with water and dirty sludgy water. If running long enough water inside gets hot and bubbles from air flowing in. Can cause your container to also crack. Great video!

A very easy way to tell whether you have a blown gasket is to just remove the oil. If water falls out first then the gasket is blown. Because oil sits on top of water.
@94sn95gt
@94sn95gt 4 месяца назад
That doesnt confirm headgasket is blown, only that coolant is making its way into the oil. Could be from the oil cooler leaking.

Okay, I have an 09 PT Cruiser. It recently started bubbling in the reservoir when the car would sit and idle. Changed thermostat, radiator cap twice, and finally the radiator, which did have a leak. However, it still bubbles in the reservoir after I drive it up a large hill and then park. It will bubble and sometimes lose coolant. There is no white smoke, no coolant in the oil, nothing like that. Could this be a cracked head? I get good heat and it never overheats while driving.

Good stuff. Here's another tip, it happened to me once: I pressurized the cooling system, looking for any water leaks. Well, if your equipment is working well (no air leaks out the pump itself or via the radiator filler neck) the system should maintain a steady pressure reading at about 12 psi (I believe. Sometimes I only fill to 7) if pressure drops within 5 minutes, I look for signs of water, on the ground, around the engine. Well, I didn't see any water anywhere..which lead me to believe that water was being lost inside the motor due to a blown head gasket.

more symptoms could be : 1-extensive smog in exhaust 2-coolant level decrease (sometimes you may hear water flow in car cabin specially at ~3000 RPM "when engine is cool") 3-increase engine oil amount 4-uneven engine idling (after engine is cooled - water leaks in engine and makes problems for spark plugs - it wont show when engine is hot) ignoring bad gasket may cause Subsequent problems for your car engine and increase costs !!!

mistarealitee74 leaking valve cover. Replace with new valve cover gasket. The oil is getting into the exhaust and causing the smoke at startup be idle. It is always leaking you just don't see smoke at higher speeds because the faster passing air disperses the smoke so you don't see it since it doesn't allow the bellowing smoke to collect as it does when it's idling.

TU & subscribed. Questions: my 98 Sonoma 2.2L with 176k is having the head done (blown gasket....previously paid ($1,350) to a shop mechanic 1 month ago who ripped me off not doing anything to the warped head, amongst other faults. Now the head is being pressure tested, milled and valve job for $350 by professionals with a guarantee. I think it now wise to replace the coolant & oil pumps even though no prior indication of faults. I plan to replace the piston rings from the top. Doable? Would you suggest the timing chain as well? I ask about the chain partly because I see some kits that have the two pumps and chain together implying this is normally done together. Is the Cloyes that does away with the tensioners a better choice than OEM? I am poor and unemployed just trying to be proactive. Am I going too far? Thanx, Mark ps...I prefer to keep this truck, other than the current problems it is in perfect condition.
@tipr8739
@tipr8739 Год назад
The chain usually doesn’t need to get changed. The belt usually needs to get done and while you’re in there it is an extra 10 minutes to do the pumps. This is probably a leftover from the belt kits, where guys are just trying to sell a bit more and do a kit. Unless there is something wrong with your timing or it is damaged in some way, you likely do jot need to do the chain.

@santarosahero
@santarosahero 6 лет назад
Christie No usually not at the waterpump will you anything weird or unusual. Where you should check is by opening the oil filler cap. If the head gasket was just blown at that very moment you probably can't tell and everything will look normal. If the head gasket has been leaking or blown for some time then you should see foam slimy frothy brown oily liquid when you open your oil filler cap. That is the motor oil mixing with your coolant.
@Someguy6571
@Someguy6571 5 лет назад
Also another way to tell your car's got a possible blown head gasket is you are not getting any heat. Since your cooling system is pressurized any loss of it will cause you to get no heat. Though it could be a clogged heater core or not enough coolant as well. Make sure to rule them out.

What about engine power? The vehicle idles indefinitely. If you rev it, it dogs out. If you drive it, it has no pulling power on hills. It blows white vapor when first started; most of the white vapor goes away after about 5 minutes, but there is still a small amount of vapor, even 1/2 hour later.

Hi, my Chevrolet Optra 2010 engine overheating. I noticed the coolant level was low and filled it up to MAX and drove around 3 days. Air conditioning was on while I was driving it, suddenly became so hot in the cabin. I stopped the car and the engine went-off on it's own. The engine couldn't be ignited there after. I took to mechanic and he said, the cause was due to engine head-gasket. He changed the head-gasket but the problem still persist, engine still overheats within a 5 minutes and gauge rises from 1/4. Mechanic said, now only engine fully has to be changed. Any suggestion please? I also noticed leakage from the coolant cap, replaced it, then seemed fine. Please share some information. I really appreciate your feedback. Thank you very much.

i changed the spark plugs the spark plug wires the ignition coils the intake manifold and the car is still shaking so i went to a mechanic and he did a leak down test and a compression test. then he said two of the cylinders have low compression and that's what's causing the car to shake, so he said i have to do a head job. i did a head job already on this car back in 2014 and it's 2021 so 7 years and i have to do another one

Hi there 2CarPros, I was wondering if you have time maybe to help with an issue I am having. I am running in to an issue with a 2005 Toyota Camry V8 check engine light (only 52,000 miles on my dashboard so the car is not driven a bunch over the years). The last 2 years like clockwork a year apart i get the check engine. The first time I brought it to a show I was told to go to. They said after checking with their computer I have a faulty knock sensor. So I said okay lets do what needs to be done. They charged me $700 at the time in 2020. They said when taking apart the parts they found coolant in different parts of the engine bay (i do not know car stuff I am pretty sure that is what he said). This part of the problem is how I found your video here. I am wondering too what could cause the coolant leak. They replace the sensor and a few days later the check engine light returns. Same codes on their test so they replace the sensors again (for free). A year goes by and then just before inspection time Check engine again. Go to the shop... same code. Now they do the replacement again and charge me $300 just for parts they say (do not know if that is a reasonable price). It is now a year since then and once again I have a check engine light. Also I should say my coolant is about an inch lower than it was a year ago. Just trying to ask anyone and everyone for information. It is such a hard thing to find a mechanic in NY and since I am not knowledgeable (but trying to learn) it makes this soo much harder.

On my 2003 civic the temperature only went high one time, every time I open he radiator and check the coolant level it’s always a little low. The fans are coming on. Not sure if I have a blown head gasket or if I just have a coolant leak somewhere.

I have the same issue on my 2003 Civic with 150k miles. Is suspect it's a head gasket since there's a black ring in the radiator, I smell exhaust gas in the radiator after driving, and some coolant is missing. I replaced the thermostat, cap, and pressure tested. No loss of pressure or leaks, and fans are running fine. I thought I would lose pressure if it was a head gasket, but maybe I should remove the spark plugs and pressure test again.

Buy the mitivac mv4560 pressure tester. It will find the leak if it's a hose or the radiator. Like 50$.

Okay there's no milky residue in oil or on oil cap, there's no bubbles in radiator, but two spark plugs did appear to look like they had rusted a bit. There is so many other things happening with this vehicle and I was hoping that some other problem could possibly make spark plugs look that way. Car runs fine, it randomly runs hot if idling, although it doesn't go any high hot but needs some water every time. Thermostat was put on thinking that would help, I noticed the top hose running from radiator to thermostat was very hard and hot...IDK what to do

My car is a 3 cylinder. Has no mayo, some coolant has been used over maybe 2 or 3 months but not huge amounts. Did a compression test and cylinder 1 and 3 were 185 but cylinder 2 was 150. I can also hear an audible whistle between 3 to 4.5k revs. sounds like a exhaust leak but it is not as I've had a new one fitted and took it to the garage 3 times as I was not sure. Cylinder 2 also misfires is left at idle for 10 minutes. I've taken my car to 4 garages and one specialist who couldn't find an issue. What could be wrong?

A year later it began to overheat only while idle. One day while idling the temperature rose rapidly and expelled all the coolant from the car, spraying all the engine and smoking. Heater hose tube had a long crack in it. Replaced the hose tube but I'm still leaking only when the engine is on. It is leaking green coolant from the oil pan however the oil itself is not milky. Any response is appreciated. Thank you

BrandonTS95 if problem only at idle it is a fan related issue for sure. Could be be bad fan, fan fuses, fan relays, fan wiring, fan controller, bad fan clutch if your car uses a clutch fan. Not to say that's you only problem. Could have other problems on top of that but that is definitely one of your problems guaranteed.

I have a little bit of white in my oil it’s been like that for months but I don’t know if that’s bad or good cause there is no knock and the oil thankfully hasn’t got super milky
@Someguy6571
@Someguy6571 5 лет назад
Did you pull the dipstick and check the oil? Some times that milky white goo is a result of condensation in the upper part of the engine not being burnt off. A bad pcv valve can cause this. Aso take the car out for a long drive every now and then to give it a chance to burn off the condensation.
@marcjones2993

Am I wrong in thinking that an engine with blown cylinder or ring will sound much different than if intact? Also not sure of the terms, in this specific context...there's blown cylinder, ring and head gasket. Are the first two more or less synonymous?

Depends how long its been like that. Eventually if coolant is getting into the oil its going to ruin your bearings.

So I have been having some problems lately with overheating. My truck was going up to 260 within 5 minutes. So I parked it and we replaced the radiator, coolant temp sensor, egr valve, thermostat and bled the system numerous times and it fixed it to an extent. The gauge will show anything from 1/4-3/4 but it never goes up to 260. The heat works occasionally and the exhaust at times will blow white smoke and then it will stop
