WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CATAMARAN? HOW DID IT WORK OUT FOR YOU?

Prindle 19. It is a giant, might not have been ideal as a first cat for a new sailor. I wanted something fast that could take many people on board. I got more than I asked for, but it is fun :)

Learned on a Hobie 16. stayed with the Hobie 16. Still have a lot to learn about how to sail a Hobie 16. Easy boat to learn basics on and infinite room to improve. Has given me about 40 years of fun. Great boat for beginner to expert.

Started with an '89 H14 two years ago. It had a broken mast and was in need of a lot of love. Watching your videos taught me how to inspect and adjust virtually every aspect of that boat. Sold it and bought an '85 H16. It also had seen many years of use and needed a complete rebuild to bring it back. Sailed it last year and have continued to work on it and make improvements for this year's sailing adventures. Can't say thanks enough for all of the work and information you have put into filming and editing so many videos!

I've recently scored a wildcat as my first cat and it's been great, proper beens given on the 3rd session. 2h of previous experience with cats on some holidays, and a lot of joyrider tv which proven seriously helpful! Very helpful the chute ring answer in the live Q&A. Some sanding, then teflon spray and it's finally doing great!!

That goes to show that anything will work as long as you don't go for too much wind straight off.

For the aussies would also recommend the nacra 4.5 slightly smaller than the nacra 5.0. Can run no jib for the first few sails, does make tacking a bit harder though. Plenty of hull volume for 3-4 people. Good fun with 2 in 10-15 knots. Easy to single hand once you know what you’re doing.

Great advice for learning, if you have a selection of beginner boats to start out on. I bought my Hobie 14 not knowing how to sail at all and learned on it. I have since upgraded to a Hobie 16 and feel confident and proficient. I definitely wish I learned on the 16 though….. HULL VOLUME is definitely worth a consideration!
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 2 года назад
Yes, it's the low volume of the 14 that makes it so difficult.

I learned cat sailing on a HC16, but since we were too light we switched to the HC14 Turbo. Now I'm back on a HC16 and in a few years i'll maybe switch to a Wildcat or a Nacra 17. As kid the Dragoon was also a lot of fun. So easy to handle and to upright after capsizing.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 2 года назад
Great stuff! The 16 is good for learning on as it doesn't accept bad technique - good for the future of your cat sailing.

Started on a dart 18. Easy to sail, simple and fast also single handed with Just the main. Then a Nacra Inter 17 because of the spi. Bit nervous boot wih a long small sail. Love my hobie fx one! Also sail a dart 15 single handed if I want to be in control under all circumstances. Easy to handle on the beach because it is light. Even thinking going back to Dart 18. Like your channel ! Keep on going...

Going through the list of criteria it sounded like the exact opposite of a Hobie 16 and I agree that it is not the best beginner boat. Yet the H16 was my first boat and I was happy with it. So if you are a beginner and considering to get one cause it's cheap and accessible, don't get discouraged. Better a H16 than no boat. Great video though to understand what makes a good beginner boat.

Minicat Guppy was my first. Big advantage not having to use a trailer, set up in 15-20 mins. Nowhere near as good as any of your recommendations but a good little boat to learn the basics. Next boat for me will be a Hobie Wave or, maybe, a Seawind 24.

Hobie Wave is by far the best beginner friendly in my opinion. I learned on them and now I teach other people on them too. My recent first catamaran buy is a Hobie 14, and it is certainly not beginner friendly despite being a solo boat. I love the 14 though, once you figure out how to sail it, it’s great.
@JoyriderTV

Yes, the Wave is ceratinly the most user friendly and simple. The 14 is possibly at the other end of the scale!

Great video as always! Is there a difference in how the trampoline in rigged? Like the stitching in the fore or aft? My Hobie 14 has it in the aft but my buddy's Hobie 16 was flipped 180 degrees.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 2 года назад
On the Hobie 15 the lacing strip is at the front. I think it's a good design - with other boats doing it that way would lead to the problem of your pockets being at the back.

I'm a beginner. I bought myself an XCat. It's small, only 14 foot mast. You can put it on top of your car and assemble it at the water. It is almost impossible to capsize. Its really fast. But doesn't hold much, with more than one person it slows down a lot.

We sometimes use a Hobie 16 easy Junior sail on our 14 that is boom-less works well especially in a strong wind. For boom-less the clew must be further towards the mast than the back beam.
