I am pretty much confused in new 2020 ACER PREDATOR HELIOS 300 , PREDATOR TRITON 300 & ASUS TUF FX505DV. All of these laptops have almost the same specs. Could you please help me to get best out of them !!!

@Moochers 5 лет назад
Hey Bree! I'm glad you enjoyed it and that it helped. I really appreciate the compliment! I know what you mean about not wanting a heavy computer. And those gaming laptops can be UGLY. But unfortunately you have to pick between: A) light, small, underpowered or B)large, heavy, powerful. Technically you COULD get a small laptop that is really powerful but you're going to be spending thousands and I mean thousands of dollars. So you have to pick between A or B. Now the two laptops you mention seem fine only if you are doing : Autocad, light Revit, light Rhino, light photoshop. If you are planning on doing renders then you're going to want something more powerful. Remember, if you're doing heavy renders, the minimum I recommend is I7, 16GB of RAM and a graphics card preferably branded "Nvidia". I hope that helps... feel free to keep in touch and feel free to ask me any questions you may have. Good luck, talk to you soon!!

Hello Mooch! I really enjoy your videos, with their concise and great quality. I have recently purchase an HP pavilion 15-cs3002ne; that contains 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD but it is very low on graphics with the NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050 with Max-Q, supposedly it would only be able to run the basics of Lumion; and not so smoothly. This really worries me as I am a rising 2nd year student, and I know Id have to change it for third year for sure, in order to last throughout my fourth and fifth year. What do you recommend me doing? I really appreciate your time.

My degree did as well. What I meant was that you could spend most of your money on a desktop that would serve only to render, and then have a mid-range laptop for school that would take care of plans and general presentation work. Thank you so much for your feedback and thanks for dropping a comment! Good luck with your studies :)

Excuse me, I’m a student majoring in architecture and now I have to make a choice between Razer Blade 15 and surface book 2 15, (Razer Blade 15: i7-8750h, gtx-1060 max-q, 16gb Surface Book 2:i7-8660u, gtx-1060, 16gb) Do you think surface book 2 can be my only computer and run 3d modeling and rendering software fast enough?which one do you think is the best choice? Hoping for your reply!
@Moochers
@Moochers 5 лет назад
Hi Oliver! I don't have experience with the Razer but I do have with the Surface: Judging by the specs, they are both comparable laptops, the biggest difference I see is in the CPU and the storage, and of course the price. The price is what really bothers me a bit. The Surface book 2 is about $2200 for 256 GB of solid state storage. This is very low in my opinion, you WILL run out really quick. And I don't think It has any other storage option so once you run out you're going to have to use an external drive which is not a great solution but it works. For $1600, the Razer has only 128 gigs of Solid state drive, but a whole terabyte of hard drive storage. They have an Option for $1800 that includes 256gb of SSD and 2T of Hard drive storage. In this case the Razer is better because it is cheaper, but you're getting way more storage! As far as the CPU goes, they are both high perforaming CPU's and they will be excellent choices for any task you throw at it. If i'm not mistaken, the Razer comes with a better CPU, but you may wanna compare both online. Now, there is a reason why the Surface book is more expensive than the Razer, and that is simply because its innovation in terms of design. It can be used as a tablet, it comes with a pen so you can sketch on it. It looks sleek, and weighs a little less than the Razer. But i'll be honest with you, I would not get it. It looks great and I'm sure it runs wonderful but the problem is that you're going to be paying more money to have the ability to sketch on it. And I know that seems like an important thing to have but paper and pen are cheaper! I once bought a surface pro tablet and I thought i would use it to sketch but I never did. I would only spend that much money if you already are constantly sketching on tablets. Don't buy it cause you think you WILL start to sketch and you photoshop with the pen. My final opinion: The Razer will have similar performance and will be cheaper. Therefore it is a better option (assuming you get the 256gb ssd ATLEAST) Disclaimer : I have never used a Razer so I can't speak about it's build, durability, or customer support.

The way you talk makes me feel like I will have to buy 3 laptops for college... @Moochers
@Moochers 5 лет назад
Hey Ana, It is definatly possible to use one computer for your whole journey at school. I'm not saying it will be easy though. You have to understand that computers in general age very quickly. What you buy today may start to become outdated in 2 years. Also, architecture programs release new versions every year and they require better hardware. Like I said it is possible to have the same laptop but you're going to be facing problem like having to use older version of programs, slow running programs, or just incompatibility in general. That being said, I used a $200 Walmart laptop for my first year, a $600 Sony for my second and third year , and a $1200 Asus until graduation. I could have stayed with the Sony but it would have meant that I couldn't render , or use lumion, or use programs that would run slow. But you know what ? You're still in high school. Don't stress over that yet. It's good that you're being proactive, but don't sweat it! Buy a nice cheap laptop for your first year, see how it goes. Then save money in the meantime so that when you start using Revit, Rhino, and Lumion, you can purchase a great laptop.
@analuisa1214

@@Moochers that's the problem. After I buy it, our money is going to another stuff, and I will have to wait long years to buy another. Hi! Thanks for making this video, it was really helpful :-)) Atm, I'm thinking of getting a dell xps 15 from the outlet store... i7-8750h, 16gb RAM, 512gb SSD & Nvidia 1050Ti. One of the main reason why I'm considering it is for the weight since I travel a fair distance for uni. I'm about to start my second year in architecture, I definitely know I'll be using rhino, and grasshopper, not sure about the others but I'd like to start learning some of the other programs like revit and autocad. Not 100% sure if I'm making the right choice...
@Moochers
@Moochers 5 лет назад
Hey Veronica! Glad it helped. The specs on the dell you mentioned seem perfect for what you'll need it for; just make sure you're getting a good price. Revit and Autocad shouldn't be a problem unless you're working on huge projects which rarely happen in school. From experience, rhino paired with grasshopper will make your computer work the hardest and it may cause it to run slow at times. But as long as you work in layers and are organized, I think the Dell XPS is a great choice.

@Moochers
@Moochers 4 года назад
I think desktops are great because they are easier to "future-proof" and technically less expensive in the long run when compared to laptops. But you do need a laptop for school though. Both would be the best option if you: A) Have the money to afford both B) Make sure the laptop is still powerful enough to make the designs You could also get a good laptop and use the cloud to render - offered by programs such as Revit and VRay

Hi, do you think msi gs65 8rf is a good laptop to consider for an architecture student? I want the laptop to be used until I graduate. But some online opinions says surfacebooks is the best option but the spec isn't that good. What's your opinion?
@Moochers
@Moochers 5 лет назад
Hey Jack! I think this is an AMAZING laptop. It will handle pretty much anything you throw at it. I've never owned an MSI before but I have been tempted to purchase them in the past. I know that people who own MSI laptops are usually happy with them. My only concern is that I7's are high temperature processors, and this laptop is really thin. I doubt it has a good cooling system so I would suggest you get a cooling mat, especially when you are rendering. Now, I don't think surface books are the best options. They are attractive because of their design and capabilities but half the stuff they market it for, you're not going to use anyway! So stick to gaming laptops like the one you pointed out. Finally , i know you say you want to use this laptop until graduation, and that is possible but unlikely. This is because you're going to be in school 4-6 years (assuming you just started and depending on the degree), and technology keeps getting better which means the programs you are using are getting better and require more power. That is why i feel that if you are going to be using the laptop for heavy renders and scenes, i suspect it will last 2 years before it starts to become outdated. Keep that in mind. I'm not saying you won't be able to use it but perhaps the programs you will be using will require more power for future updates.

Hi I’m in the third year of architecture and it’s time to buy the strong laptop for rendering on vray, lumion, a lot of autocad and photoshop along with video editing slightly My budget is 1000 $ or 80000rs (I am from India) Ideal case is a gaming laptop with 1060gtx, 16gb ram but I find them very bulky personally Is there an option of slightly sleeker looking laptops which are easy to carry around but equally powerful? Maybe the zen book series Also do you recommend an MX150 graphic card for architecture?
@Moochers
@Moochers 6 лет назад
Hi Shinjini. I don't like telling you exactly which computer to get because of branding conflicts and also because I don't like recommending something I haven't personally used. What I will say is that I've always been in similar case to the one you're in: buy a lightweight, portable, powerful, and inexpensive laptop. What I've learned from my previous laptops is that you want to avoid a 17" screen. It is nice on the eyes but eventually becomes annoying to carry around. So I recommend you get max a 15" screen (you could always buy a monitor to use while at home or school that offers dual screen and a bigger work area). Next, I would encourage you to look at the laptop I linked in my description. That Laptop is the one I have been using for the past 3 months, and I am EXTREMELY happy with. It's an HP Omen (15.6" screen, I7 Intel processor, 16 gig ram, Nvidia GT 1060 graphics card, gaming laptop, REALLY lightweight and portable for its capabilities) The design is really nice in my opinion because it is not SO flashy like the others i've seen so it looks professional for a gaming computer. That being said, i think it's a solid starting point to use as comparisons for other laptops if you choose not to buy it. I personally don't like Asus because my last ROG gaming Asus was really slow from the beginning and had alot of battery issues. But you should still use them to compare. MSI is another brand I looked into but I felt they were a little overpriced (maybe due to better quality; I'm not sure thought). As for the graphics card you suggested: I am not personally familiar with it, but I spent sometime research it and saw that It was considered a low to mid range graphics card. Good luck on your hunt, feel free to keep in touch, and enjoy your studies!

@Moochers
@Moochers 4 года назад
I would not get a Macbook for architecture. If you already have one and want to use it, that's fine; no problem. There are workarounds for downloading and using architecture programs. If you are going to purchase new, I would recommend going with Windows OS because most programs (if not all) are compatible with it and it's as simple as downloading and using the program. Like I said, you can get a Mac, and it WILL work. But you'll have to spend sometime looking into the workaround/setup for each program you need. Also, some program interfaces will be completely different on Mac vs Windows.

Because I've watched every architecture tutorial you've made so far and there is a huge gap between what you make on those and this kid sitting on a giant laptop! haha
@Moochers
@Moochers 6 лет назад
No way man! Why did you buy it originally? Is that the one you use to edit ? Which laptop is it? Thanks for noticing. Hope this doesn't bore you: I use revit yo actually model the buildings. Here is where I make the plans and 3d model. Sometimes in Revit I also place decorative elements. Once the building is done I export it over to Lumion. This video is a product of Lumion. Here I can add the Moochers , trees , decorative elements etc. And animate them. The old videos were made on revit. But then I was like "well that's not too fun to watch" and I though of how I could make it more fun to watch. So I decided to try to create little movies based on whatever I'm saying. So that's where I'm at right now. Moving forward the Idea is to take whatever topics I want to explain and animated using these programs. TLDR: I use lumion :)

Hahha cos I thought I'll be mobile but apparently I spend more time on my fat ass than I expected! Yes it's the one I used for editing; it's pretty damn good and I got it cheap cos I bargained at Best Buy. Hey, I actually am an Interior Student who held off buying a new laptop since I wanted more clear direction on what kind to invest it. So far ive used CAD, Revit , Adobe and looking into a better rendering program. I would like price point to stick to $600-800. I've had laptops prior the heating was an issue. Trying to avoid that one. What recommendations would you have?
@Moochers
@Moochers 5 лет назад
Hi Nancy! Remember that generally speaking, the more power a laptop has, the hotter it will run. That is why I always tell everyone to purchase an external laptop fan that you could use occasionally. As for the laptop $600-$800 is low on the budget side. I dont know if you'll be able to purchase a laptop that will fit your needs for that money. Usually you're going to be looking around $1000. I think Revit is a very powerful tool for interior design because you can create your own materials and textures and the cloud renderer is pretty good. Maybe a better option would be Lumion but if you set up your revit materials correctly you can produce some nice renders and not need a super powerful computer. I always recommend the HP Omen because that is the laptop I am using at the moment. You can find the link in the description. Also the Acer Predator Helios is an incredible powerful laptop. Again, those 2 are around the $1000-$1200 budget. For around $900 you could look into the Lenovo Y700. It's a gaming laptop that has an I7, 12gb of ram, but only a GTX 960M graphics card. If you plan on doing cloud renders it will be great. If you want lumion it will struggle but it's still usable. For around $800 you have the MSI GV63 which has an I5, 8gb of RAM, and a GTX 1050Ti graphics card. I recommend you look into getting a gaming laptop (all these are) because they have the best graphics card installed which is what you need. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need help with anything else. Good luck!

mate, im currently 16 years old and for now i intend to study mechanical engineering when i finish high school, but i needed a laptop now for studies (school and a technician car mechanic course, for which i guess i will not need any graphics performance). im wondering if i already make the investment on a reasonably spec'ed laptop (like, maybe a nitro 5 i5-9300h or ryzen 5 3550h with a gtx1650 or a lenovo ideapad l340 gaming with the same i5 but a gtx1050, cause these are the types of laptops id be able to stretch) so that when i enter college i will not have to worry about that, however, im afraid of it being too early to make such a big investment whilst i wont get the most out of it due to the fact that i will not be running (or as far as im concerned, wont need to) any type of 3d software like revit or autocad. instead, im thinking of buying a 14 inch aspire 5 with just an integrated gpu or a 15.6 inch one with an 15 10th gen and an mx250 to get me through high school and maaaaaybe scratch the surface at college with these softwares, as they would barely or not run at all sorry for the long text but id love to know your opinion, do i wait to buy a more powerful one for college and buy a simpler one for now? and if were to buy a more powerful laptop, would those i mentioned above (nitro 5 and lenovo l340 gaming) be enough for 2-3 years from now? cheers from brazil 🇧🇷

At first I planned in but a dell precision costing around $2000 (I personally find this to be really expensive and would prefer not spending this much, but I am willing to). And if I am going to spend $2000 I would like to use a MacBook. Will buying the 15” mac be a good purchase? What some other options? Also I know my school uses rhino6 and vray. I could use some help. Thank u!

I would highly suggest you do not buy a Mac. Also for your first laptop I do not recommend you spend so much money. You won't be needing true computing power for atleast a year and by then new technology will exist. My advice ? Buy a good affordable laptop to use now and to learn to use the programs. Save your money for after your first year when you will need a super powerful laptop.

Hey, thanks for the informative video. I am willing to get a new laptop, and will be using it for V-Ray 3DS Max, Revit and Lumion Rendering as I am going to work remotely. I am considering the following specs; i7 9750 Hexagon CPU and 2.6 GHz 6GB GPU , 16 GB RAM and 1or 2 TB HDD with 256 GB SDD When I started looking, didn't realize many brands offer these specs, now I got to know, I can see that I can get these specs in Lenovo Legion, HP Omen, msi, Acer Predator and Alienware. I am very confused as the price range differs among different brands, do you recommend going for a specific one / avoiding a specific one? Thanks a lot!
@Moochers
@Moochers 4 года назад
Hey! I never like to focus on brands because experience differ SO much. For example, I have a friend that LOVES Alienware; I think they are complete trash. Most of my friends had Asus back at school. I also bought one; it turned out to be the biggest piece of garbage computer I ever owned. Most people I know were against Lenovo; currently I have one and I love it - same for HP. My main laptop is an HP Omen. A lot of people told me to stay away from this laptop. It turns out it's been my best laptop to date. All I can say is that you make sure you pick a company that's reputable and make sure they offer a nice warranty (laptops have issues ALL the time). Also, make sure that you read as many reviews as you can before purchasing the laptop you want. Make sure that you focus on reviews that talk about performance, not reviews that talk about the brand. Buying a laptop is very frustrating. There are so many to choose from and, like you say, similar specs fall in completley different parts of the price spectrum. The best thing I can tell you is to pick 3 or 4 and make a little pro's and con's list for each of them. That's what helped me.

Thank you so much for getting back to me :] okay so AutoCad and Sketchup are not very heavy programs (I've run both from a little 11 Inch screen I5 i have with very little problems). Illustrator and Photoshop tend to get very intense real quickly in terms of Memory and Storage. Finally you say you'll do some light gaming and possible rendering. Honestly I would go (if you can afford it ofcourse) for a 16 gb RAM, 256GB SSD (MINIMUM lol - Get as much as you can afford - this will run out QUICK with photoshop - an alternate would be google file stream but you still need to have memory in your computer for storing programs so trust me, minimum 256 and that's low). It's be nice if you can get an I7 processor with a dedicated graphics card. Like an Nvidia 1060 and up. This will allow you to stay within a nice budget, yet be able to do some light renders here and there. From the laptops you included I would go with MSI (if you can afford it), the others are just okay. You should check out my other video for more suggestions. : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZoFjp5tCIt0.html&lc=UgzHOkooZBmP9f97tM14AaABAg Good luck, see you around!

100% windows. I saw a lot of people in school switch from apple to windows because they had to do too many work-arounds for apple to work. Every program you need for architecture is made to work with windows, also most the the tutorials out there are done on Windows. I really do recommend the laptop that I'm using now, the link is in the description. BUT - if you plan on multitasking (rendering an animation while creating a plan on Photoshop) this computer WILL struggle. For the price it's amazing though. But definitely I would always go for windows.

Definitely the one that I bought. The HP omen 15.6. I7, 16gigs of ram, Nvidia 1060 graphics card. It has a solid state drive (only 120gigs though) but a 1 terabyte hard drive. I spent weeks searching for laptops , and this one is the one i went with. I use lumion, photoshop, revit, autocad, after effects, and premiere. No problem. I use it to make every video on my youtube channel. The only negative is that when I render a video on lumion, all my other programs lag. So you cant really be rendering and animation and work on other things. But that shouldn't be a problem if you organize your time and strategize. The link is in the description. I do recommend you dont only take my word for it but also research what others have to say about it. But personally for the price I think it's amazing and I would rate it 9/10.

Hey Luis! I think having a laptop first is the most important just because you're gonna need to use something while at school or away from home. I only recommend a desktop to those who have a laptop that's good enough to create plans and diagrams and can leave the renders to be done at home. So if you have a good laptop then I definatly suggest you buy a desktop that is more powerful than your laptop. I recommend this because generally speaking desktops are cheaper and they are easily customizable. If your laptop is not great then I suggest considering upgrading that first.

The program is three years and I'd like to get a laptop that will last for the entire program, do you think it's possible? I know the technology changes quickly, so I'm wondering whether it's better to get good specs and accept that I'll need to replace it in a few years, or get amazing specs and hope that it takes me through school. I'd prefer the latter option as I'd like to make as little e-waste as possible.

Hey Iva! Really cool to hear about your journey into your Master's degree; really exciting! I think 3 years is doable but your laptop may struggle a bit during the final year. But it is super doable, many of my friends were able to pull it off by using cloud rendering to avoid using their laptops hardware and also designing their models in parts to avoid using so much RAM at a time. So it is possible! I think in your case, you should get the best laptop you can afford and use it for the next 3 years. The first option is okay too but I would prefer to buy a better laptop now. As for the Nvidia graphics card with 2GB - i think that is way too low, try to get a graphics card with a higher memory (if possible of course)! let me know if you need more help! Cheers!

It should be okay for medium sized projects. Really heavy models are going to struggle. You can always break up the model into parts if you are using Revit. Then you can link them together. That's what I used to do. It allows you to have a full model without worrying about its heaviness.

Hey! Great question. I know how you feel. I've felt that confusion MANY times before. If I was in your position, I only had , let's say $1,200, and I needed the best possible computer for the last few semesters. I would buy the Acer Predator Helios. It's just like the Omen but it has more storage and faster processing speeds. So my final answer : I would Acer Helios 300 or HP OMEN. :] let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck in your last year!

So sorry about that!!! I would go with the Acer Helio 300. It should last you for a couple of years with no problem. It's gonna be great for photoshop and revit and all that. Lumion will work fine. If you have really big scenes it may struggle a little bit but all you have to do is turn down the graphics in lumion a bit and you'll be fine.

It does have a graphics card. It might be integrated. You should be able to make basic designs with it but once it becomes too complex, it will struggle.

You can use Mac. I knew a few people who had Macs back in school. The thing is that there is some compatibility issues with some programs. You should be fine in interior design though. I would do some research on it though.

I'd look for something else if you're thinking about VRAY. Check out my other video : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZoFjp5tCIt0.html&lc=UgzHOkooZBmP9f97tM14AaABAg where I go over ideas for laptops you should be looking into. Stick to category c in the video. The reason I don't really like the Asus you suggested is because the graphics card is not really a good choice for rendering (Vray). Hope that helps!

I'm not too sure... I think it can handle autocad , but again, not sure. What I would do is google and see if the Ipad Pro can run "Autocad/Archicad, Sketchup/Rhino, Revit" If it can run all those programs, you are set. You might not be able to render though...

Whats going on man. Appreciate the video. I had a quick question though. I currently have a Dell XPS 15 9560. It has the 7700HQ and a GeForce 1050. I am curious on what you're thoughts are on this running the specific design programs I will encounter in architecture school. I know a decent amount about computers, but not too much about the demands the applications will put on the computer. I was considering upgrading to the Razer Blade 15 or the Newer Dell XPS with the 6 core I7 or the I9, or do you think what I have will suffice. I would really like a smooth experience when using these programs and just not a enough to get by experience. I have a custom build at home with a 8700K and a 1080ti, but from what I am hearing I will want to be spending most my time in studio. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hey Evan! The specs on this laptop are great for using Autocad, Revit, Rhino, and Sketchup. I'm not sure at what level you are but if you are just starting out, this is a perfect laptop to get started. It should last you atleast a year but maybe in the viscinity of 2 years. An i9 is insane right now and you dont need it unless you are creating buildings that have alot if detail and/ materials. It's TRUE that you will spend most of your days at studio but having a custom build like yours is a huge PRO. I would save your money, use your current laptop, and when time comes you upgrade. Use your laptop to create the design, then use the desktop to render (cause it's easier and cheaper to upgrade). If I said something that doesnt make sense let me know. I'm typing this on my phone so there are probably alot of mistakes lol. Also, if I said something you do not know what I mean, ask. Take care!
