From our collection of free training vids at crosstrainingenduro.com Which dirt bike should you buy? So many choices for cross training, extreme enduro and enduro riding - four stroke, two stroke, hybrid and even trials bikes. What's the best dirt bike for beginners? Cross training applies the same principles to enduro bike and the clutch becomes an extension of your thottle at both low and high speeds. We look at the pros and cons of each, but not looking at specific brands as such. The trials skills needed for extreme enduro and endurocross are favouring the hybrid bikes and trials bikes for cross training purposes e.g. the KTM Freeride, Sherco X-ride and Ossa Explorer. Which are the best dirt bikes?
Cross Training Enduro Skills Facebook: / cross.training.enduro....
Cross Training Enduro Skills RU-vid channel: / @crosstrainingenduro
As most experienced riders will tell you, your riding skills are what count, not the type of bike you are on. Cross training is about applying trials techniques that emphasize balance, traction and throttle/clutch control - these can be learned on any bike regardless of whether you potter around on a dirt bike or are getting into endurocross and extreme enduros.
Having said that, you will definitely find that the major factor involved with your choice of bike is weight - the lighter your dirt bike is, the more you can apply cross training techniques. We'll start with the heaviest bikes and work through to the lighter ones.
FOUR-STROKE ENDURO BIKES 102 TO 115KG (224 TO 255 LB)
What is this cross training? A small group of Australian riders decided to take on the challenge of learning these techniques in their early 50s, figuring it was now or never to learn some serious enduro skills before their creaking bodies said enough is enough.
Many riders will happily choose a heavier four-stroke if it suits their riding style. Traditionally four-strokes have been up 13kg heavier than two-strokes but some European bikes are now getting quite light. Disadvantages? Four-strokes have more complicated engines so servicing is more expensive and tedious when it does occur. They only fire half as often so cannot match the two-strokes for outright power. Nonetheless, you will occasionally see the top riders in endurocross and extreme enduro events on four-strokes. When the going gets really tough and slow, the four-strokes are more likely to overheat. A top rider on an old ag bike will smoke any of us average joes in any conditions other than an outright drag on smooth ground! Remember this when deciding on a best bike for cross training. A little over a year ago they started pouring over extreme enduro video footage for tips on extreme techniques, and bought trials bikes to develop the skills that Graham Jarvis kept emphasising.
If you are thinking of getting into extreme enduro, or simply want to take your riding to the next level, this cross training approach to dirt riding is definitely worth a try. Not surprisingly, trials skills are most easily learnt on a trials bike. Consider getting a trials bike and joining a club. The vast majority of the skills are directly transferable to your enduro bike. Obviously the enduro bike is heavier, you have less grip, and your body weight won't influence the bike as much, but the key dirt riding skills are all there for the taking. What do all the world's best extreme enduro riders have in common? Almost without exception they are former trials champions who applied who have applied trials techniques to their dirt riding skills to tackle some of the world's toughest events - Romaniacs, Erzberg, The Roof of Africa and Hells Gate.
At first glance, trials riding doesn't appear to have much in common with dirt riding as much of the action happens at walking speed or even slower - but the balance, precise, traction and clutch skills help with enduro riding, especially for extreme enduro. The growing interest in extreme enduro has seen a resurgence in trials riding riding internationally, and many dirt riders are now joining trials clubs to improve their overall skills for basic dirt riding or hard enduro events and endurocross. So what is cross training? It's just applying trials skills to dirt riding... slowing things down initially we we can be faster, and more importantly, better dirt riders. Slow things down when learning how to ride a dirt bike faster and focus on clutch control, balance and traction. Don't aim for speed straight away or you will have to unlearn bad dirt riding techniques later. A coaching session with Chris Birch was a great start. Arguably the top extreme enduro rider back in 2010 despite coming from New Zealand, Birchy shared many tips that worked their way into the training vids.

Great Video! I ride a KTM 300 2T and have owned a couple 250s 2srokes and a few big fat 4 strokes over the last 10 years. This past weekend I took Shane Watt's Dirtwise clinic and our instructor rode a KTM 125 SX, he was 6'2" 250# and could ride anything. It's definitely the rider not the bike!

drtooth69 +1 on that. our DRZ rider is way less experienced than us but almost always does the same stuff we do - incredible to watch! once we realized it's mostly about the rider we got serious about learning techniques and spent way less time on bling and blaming our bikes or bike setups. :-)

Looking at theese videos makes me feel very happy. You have strong points at each choice! Im currently looking for used 2012-2014 model of 300exc/300rr and I think that after 3 years of riding on 250excf(2005 model year-approx 125 kilos) It will be a massive difference! What Ive learned on a heavy 250f: Right gear choice, handling the weight, managing throttle in slippery conditions and It cost me a fortune(In all theese years) for casual 4stroke maintenance. I will probably do rebuild on 300 2stroke myself because its so damn easy .. and cheap..

I am an experienced rider, i am 1,83m height and weigh 80 kg. My best bike EVER was a KTM EXC200 2001. This bike literally used to pull my as around. It pulled up the hills like a tractor. I can barely remember myself having to push the bike somewhere. It was mainly used for very extreme enduro and very tight trails and rivers. On the downside the front fork was solid cement even on the softer side of the adjustments, and the seat used to make my penis go numb just after 15 minutes of riding. KTMs after 2003 are designed for track enduro where you do fast laps and the whole configuration of the bike is Go Fast. Older KTMs are very short geared and designed for Go Anywhere. Plus they are solid bikes, they are cheap to run and take any punishment. I used to drop the bike on the ground in gear to help a mate and when i got back the bike was still running every time. Press the clutch, lift it up off you go. Riding on a budget? Think twice when you see a 14 year old KTM on the adverts. Thank you for the awesome video. I agree with 99% of what you said.

I love your videos, been binge watching them. Great content, great comments, I laugh a lot at what you say and total respect for the advice given. The one thing though brother, it sounds like you are reading from notes, so it comes off kinda hard to listen too for long periods. I get it though, hell of a lot of effort put into the videos you are making, just a simple request for your natural way of speaking. If this is how you speak, full apologies. Love the content and the effort you put in. Hope this comment isn’t offensive.

My first bike and current bike is a 2001 yz125. Only mods are a fmf pipe and pro taper bars. It’s a mx bike but i only ever do hare scrambles and trail riding. I barely ever have to use WOT on the trails. And i can keep right up with the huskys and ktm’s. You really don’t need 250+cc to be a good rider. Sure it’s a lot easier to have that extra displacement chugging you along but you don’t need it to ride trails

So deadpan with that joke bike at the end. Most of this was right on, but I have to take exception to the "4 strokes overheating (more than 2 strokes)" . Every bike I've seen overheat in the trails has been a 2 stroke, and I've never seen a 4 stroke overheat. Oh and good point about small bikes. Less power=more control. If you can ride a bike wide open everywhere easily, THEN you need a bigger bike! Great vid.

I'm currently on an '86 XR250R and at 250lbs, it's a bit on the heavy side, but is bullet proof all the way around. Although the engine is anemic by today's standards, I've made it up any hill I haven't cowarded out on. I've ridden 2-strokers in the past and must say I've enjoyed the advantages mentioned, but I hate dealing with pre-mixes and top end rebuilds that often. I'd probably still snag up any '86 Honda 250R if it popped up at the right price though.

Cheap, LONG production line making parts plentiful, good low end power especially once after exhaust and jet kit have been installed, great fuel economy, great brakes, great ground clearance, GREAT on road and performs well offroad once suspension is tweaked but fire trails are no problem, ITS STREET LEGAL, so ride to the trails and have fun then ride home. Con 1. a bit heavy just work out Or just get the DR1800 and make your own trails, drive straight through mountains, ass it across oceans and EXPLORE THE WORLD!

I'm considering buying myself a CCM (the small British brand) C-XR230. It's cheap at £1600 (2nd hand). It's also road legal, and needs to be; on account of I don't have a van or a car license. I noticed it's got 18HP, weighs 130kg. Not much power, and pretty heavy. Is this enough to get me started for Enduro? (It doesn't seem like much for the road!) Do you reckon this bike will be alright, be able to get the front wheel up to go over logs and impress the local wildlife and stuff?

+euphoric rational i don't think it would... they are designed to rev very high, a fair bit further than it's two stroke cousins so i don't think that would be an issue. probably the best thing would be see if you wrangle a test ride?

Perfect bike would be 250 cc, light weight, 4 stroke, liquid cooled. Oh parts have to be cheap, because you will need lots of parts replaced while training.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 7 лет назад
for cross training the four strokes will usually be heavier, overheat in slow conditions, stall much easier and lack the lowdown punch for bigger obstacles... but they can be more user-friendly for less experienced riders

Ya so i have a 04 rmz250 kinda set up for trails but i do a healthy mix of track too. the bike really fits my riding style but do to $$ i was tinking i was gonna get this years 2017 KTM 300XCW. i wanted a even more versatile bike that i could turn in to a dualsport. what i really want to know is how hard would it be to convert to a really LIGHT and POWERFULL TOWSTROKE form a HEAVY FOURSTROKE

wow i have a friend who had a ktm 300 2 stroke 6 days and had to sell it due to too much power on hill climbs ... his weight was not the problem rather the bike had a power band on very low revs .. his wondering what bike to buy now ... he is experienced and ways just ove 90kg

Husain Shaik I weigh about 68kg, I have a RMZ 450 4stroke I'm somewhat experienced... I love the power on hillclimbs, but hate that it stalls in technical stuff, has no electric start, suspension is too stiff for technical stuff, 19" rear wheel, too tall gearing, heavy...

I"m astounded at how much those dual sport 250s can weigh. It probably makes them feel very stable on the road, and dirt roads, but I rode one briefly on single track and had a lot of respect for the guy struggling to get it through.

@@crosstrainingenduro It's a great way to sweat, that's for sure. Usually go through almost 3 liters of water in 2 hours of single track.. Might look at getting the 350excf next year just for the weight difference.

Hey Cross training Enduro guy, I understand you are a tall guy, am I correct? If so how tall? I'm 6.3 with LONG legs, the KTM bikes seem to be shrinking and I'm over the crazy pricing, reliability issues and crap suspension. It's only taken me 25 years to get tired of Orange! How do you find the Beta you ride for size? Bigger the better for me. Thank you.

I was thinking of buying a trials bike as second bike to my enduro, but having in mind, that there is no trials club near where i live i'd need a road legal bike... do you think it would make sense to buy an ossa explorer even if i already own an enduro?? or does it even make sense to buy a trials bike (or hybrid) when i have no terrain suited for trials and would ride it in the woods (of course i would search for the most suited natural terrain but i think it could still be critical) sorry for my bad english skills... i'm german
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 7 лет назад
that is a tough decision. if you don't have rough technical terrain suitable for trials riding you might find the trials bike very boring. you can still learn all the techniques on your enduro bike... some are just harder to learn.
