In this video I show you the easy way to pick the best performance cams for your motorcycle. Now this info is good for any type of motorcycle that's not electric.
I’m looking at a reaper 574 for my ultra ‘13 103 twin I’m 75%-80% on the highway and the rest is street light stuff this video helped me out with solidifying my decision
I not a expert for sure . I drove my money pits 2 up in Colorado and other places . There something to be said about cubic inches . I have the 640 SS in both bikes. This camshaft really shines with some compression added to it . Just needs a good tune . I think my Rev limiter is set to 6200 on both engines.. I use DD 2 into 1 exhaust.. on both bikes
Awesome video, very informative. .. not sure what year your Heritage is but what cam upgrade would you recommend for 2006 heritage softail. Would it still be the 583 for a 06 Thank you
Sorry I might of missed it, but I didn't hear what cams you're running? I have a 2011 Softail classic completely stock 5k miles I want to build for my bike night show-off bike. My 2nd bike 2007 Electra Glide Standard 43k miles, installing S&S dual header with 4" Rinehart pipes, screaming Eagle high flow air kit, power commander V tuner, not looking at a big bore kit right now, possibly will later, best cam option for mid and higher power? Great info by the way, with all the videos I've watched I have to say you broke the info down better then anyone else. 👍🏻
I run s&s 583 cams in my heratage softail. I picked it because I do alot of riding in the mountains loaded down and it keeps me from down shifting as much. In my dyna I run s.e. 260 cams it's my hotrod bike for light to light performance on bike night. I have run a pile of others and ended up choosing those because of how well they fit my needs. As far as what cam to use for your application I will only recommend one's I personally have used in my bikes when trying to find one that fit my needs. As a mechanic at a dealership I have installed hundreds but it's hard to recommend any of them based on a 7 mile test ride. I liked the s.e. 257 and the s&s 585 for interstate riding but the 583 is my favorite for 2 lane highways especially in the mountains.
so my friend, what cam do u use. i ask because i put a fueling 525 gear drive in one of my TC fuel injected, 5 years ago, and an S&S 509g gear drive in my other TC carburetored. both run great, but the fueling is a better set up.
For my style of riding I found that I love the performance I get from the s&s 583c. I live in the Ozarks and do alot of riding out west so getting the most grunt at the bottom is important. My heratage is a 88 so I did have to go with progressive wound springs but I had the heads off to port and polish them anyway.
I have a 2015 fatboy. It already came with a aftermarket air filter, and has a set of Vance/Hanes shorty headers. It sounds good, like it is' but' would like to know what can set-up would be good for it. I'm using riding around town, but' take the highway to get to town, and' ride to the Coast, which' has long stretched roads for miles. I do plan on going with a new cam plate and new oil pump as well. Thinking about the SS. So' any ideas, as to what size cam I should use.
Since your going in it trust me from experience that the small lift cams are not gonna satisfy you. For myself I learned to go with the largest cam with duration and lobe separation that will give me what I want when I want it. Don't forget you got the springs in the head's to handle it with a 2015.
Sorry for delay been tied up traveling to daytona. Yes the woods 222 is comparable to mine just looking at the specs. I have never run one but the numbers look good.
Hows it going man, love your videos. I have a 2012 Road Glide Ultra with a 103 and Im looking for a nice mid range cam. I do most of my riding around town and 2-3 hour rides in the country sometimes on the freeway. Im not doing burnouts or whole shots so want something strong in the mid range. Im a first time cam guy and with all the cams out there its mind boggling. Not looking to do any head work in the future and want something that bolts right in. Any suggestions on the right cam to go with?
@@DeathProofProductions Thanks, I was looking at the SE 204 or 255, and Andrews 57H. There's so many options out there and so much information both ways that its hard to make a decision. I know any cam I go with is better than stock but hate to spend the money and time doing it myself and not like the one I put in.
I understand you prefer S & S cams in your builds. My question is a 100" big bore kit from S & S everything I need, TC3 Cam plate, TC3 oil pump, 585 gear drive cams if crank runout allows, adjustable pushrods, lifters and also S & S heads will cost around $4500. Fuel Moto has a 98" big bore kit with all of that except has Woods TW-555-6R chain drive cams with newer hydraulic tensioners and they have Level B CNC heads I would send my old heads in for a core, all of that cost about $3500. I can find dyno charts for the Fuel Moto/Woods build at 112 hp and 116 tq for similar year air cleaner and exhaust I have but I can't find dyno charts for the S & S build with heads and all. Is the S & S worth it? I understand the gear drive comes with a higher cost. Let me know if you know where I can find S & S dyno charts. Thanks!
I'm just a s & s guy because that's what I've been buying for myself since the 90s but fuelmoto is a good company. If it was me I would go with the 3500 setup and use that money saved for a road trip having fun riding that white knuckled chariot of doom. The need for Gear drive cams is really blown out of proportion. When I was working at bumpus harley davidson in memphis and the twin cam was born, I would have guys come in the service department just dogging the new engine because of the cam chain. When they were done ranting I would watch them walk out to there truck with overhead cams and 2 foot long cam chains turning them but they never complained about there truck. One issue about the gear drive is if your run out increases over the years you will start to get gear whine and premature gear wear. To me it's not worth the money.
@@DeathProofProductions Thanks! Appreciate your input. I'm leaning toward going with the Fuel Moto set up myself. Heck how can I go wrong if I get over 100 hp and torque numbers compared to the stock 88. With the money I save maybe I can add a decent oil cooler. They are a very reputable company with great technical support. I have 2 other bikes also so it's not like I'm going to put a ton of miles on it and with the improvements to the hydraulic tensioners I will get many miles on before any issues arise anyway. Thanks again I really enjoy your channel, keep up the great job!
yes at full temp. mine has auto compression release valves i unhooked both of them and both cylinders read 210 psi. mine is 2016 Dyna street bob. 103 . i will try leak down this weekend.. Thanks...
Hello I found your channel via hours and hours of searching RU-vid for real gun smith content. I have a question for you if a old guy such as myself wants to pursue a career and gunsmithing. How would you recommend it ????? Do you think SDI or any on line gunsmithing school is really worth the money. Btw I’m a fan of blue moon as well great beef
you can learn the basics of gunsmithing by reading a few books and watching some good videos on you tube. this will get you were you can understand how to repair broken guns. go to jack first gun parts and order all three volumes of the gun parts exploded diagrams. as far as doing the finish work like bluing and color case hardening and that stuff you will learn everything you need from the instructions that come with the chemicals and stuff you buy from brownells. but what separates the men from the boys is knowing how to run a lathe, milling machine and tig weld. all that you can learn online. i recommend watching scotty on poboy specials channel and this old tony.
I just purchased a bone stock 2002 FXDX, if you can believe that! It's being shipped. What woukd you go with for the chest, and cams to rip hard around town? Thanks.
I would look at the s&s 551 or 583, i personally run the 583. I've got a pile stacked up like cord wood that I've tried and found that for my riding style I like these the best. I love the low end grunt they provide. It doesn't have to be s&s just one with a simular grind.
@@DeathProofProductions Thanks! I spoke with a very reputable shop that's been in business for 2 decades, and was recommended going gear drive with the S&S 509 cam? He said he's never seen a problem with gear drives from run out? He told me I watch too much You Tube? What are your thoughts?
I agree with him that you have to be careful with what you hear on RU-vid, lots of folks faking the funk for views. The mian reason that run out is important in gear drives is that if the working depth of the gear teeth is not correct it causes binding of the pressure angle on the teeth. This causes gear whine and accelerated wear. Flywheel run out can increase with time from a thing called shucking the flywheel plus I always felt it's kinda expensive. The 509 cam is ok but it's a very small upgrade over some other choices, if your spending the money to go in to it get the most bang for your buck. If your not satisfied with the cam then your spending money to do it again.
@@DeathProofProductions Yea, I understand the principle, but oddly he indicated he's never seen a bike come back to his shop with that damage? And he gets "alot" of bikes! Tough decision for me......
I've only seen it a few times myself, one was bad enough that I replaced the flywheel's and main bearings. These guys had alot of miles on there bikes and ride hard so that comes into play to. Actually gonna be making a vid hammer forging that very bearing into a knife. I would go with more aggressive cams if your spending the money to go into it.
I just wanted your professional opinion I have a 2000 softail springer I'm going to change out the cams in the shoe tensioners. My riding style is basically idle to 4500 rpms. I'm going to change out the cams and the cam tensioner shoes. I was wondering what you thought of the s&s 509s or the woods tw-6. Bike is already stage 1. Thank you. Really just want an easy bolt in cam
Sorry for delay been tied up with this shoulder surgery. Look at the specs on several cams and if you have stock compression than pick on that has the highest lift without much overlap. I'm a big fan of s&s and screaming eagle so that's the brand I buy.
I just bought an '04 Road King. I plan to do some long road trips. Im not trying to build a rocket. I would like something torquey with good passing power.
if your gonna go into it i would choose a more aggressive cam. the 509 is to mild and you will regret the time and money you spent for the little gains you get.
I see your like me. The 583 and the screaming eagle 262 are the only two that have ever put a smile on my face and I have tried and installed quite a few, hell i got ones i pulled out that didn't satisfy me stacked up on a shelf like cordwood
Guy in Video "My shift points are going to be around 5000rpm because I don't want to blow my bike up to prove a point" Me: bumping my rev limiter down from 7000rpm to 6800rpm 🤫😕😟😮 Lolll
Or I could use my 26 years of experience as a certified Harley tech, a machinist and millwright to get all the power I need out of it . Just wondering how many coast to coast trips have you done, I bet none so you can take your hate comment and shove it up your ass.
That might be the dumbest comment I've ever heard about shifting. Great video! Great explanation for guys who are new to cam upgrades. Pretty impressive taking that Heritage across country with no tunes! 😂 Ride on brother 👍@DeathProofProductions
Thanks for the compliment. The one thing that where's you out is these slackjawed bugger eating morons making some dumb ass comment about stuff they don't know anything about. I mean who the hell doesn't want more power. Im sure last week they couldn't spell biker now they are one.
Cam choice has alot to do with the r.p.m. range your wanting the bike to come alive at. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say your wanting plenty of bottom end tourque so the s&s 583 in a softail would be my recommendation.
S & S has a complete 100" Power Package with everything from cam plate, oil pump, lifters, pushrods comes with 585 easy start cams. Need to go with their cnc 79 cc heads with better valve springs for the 585 lift cams. Not sure exactly the difference is between 583 and 585 cams if someone knows like to hear.
