1.4k views, They owe you big time. Like everyone else I was a kid in a candy store. Hell I started grabbing two of everything I recognized for my 02 Deuce. Best price and quality is a unicorn anymore. Thank you for all you share with us, not just the knowledge and skills but letting us in personally on you and your family's life. Trust me, your videos help us just as much as you, hell I watch them several times just make sure I did it right. Thanks Dave! Lets have a cold one and watch the fork video now.

Man that means alot, comments of that nature make us want to push harder and be more creative in our content and provide all the skills that i learned over the past 30 years in the mechanical industry. truth is i always wanted to write a book about machinery skills but the brain injury stopped that. if we ever meet up I will for sure have a cold beer with you or possibly 30.

Just received my Cyco tensioner pads and gaskets today. Yes the quality of the pads and gaskets are exceptional. I ordered these from your recommendation.

I was wondering about the quality of their gaskets, especially for how cheap they are. I did get their chain tensioner shoes on your recommendation. Pretty easy to install. I’m almost done with a 98” install on my 1999 wide glide. I ported the heads and I’m waiting to get them back from the machine shop. I put S&S 585 cams in there too. Your videos have helped immensely. Thanks man!!!

Dave, I'm like a kid in a candy store, when it comes to tapping into your experienced brain, and generous willingness to share it with us.... Couple more quick questions.... 1.Are the tension pads the same front and rear the same shoe?? 2. As a mechanic,on paper, installing full timing gears and eliminating the chains is typically stronger and better in the automotive, trucking world...why aren't more people converting a twin cam accordingly?? 3. Since a major complaint is the tensioner spring plate is to strong,and puts to much pressure on the pads....have they upgraded with weaker, less tension springs? 4. Can you replace, upgrade the chains with better, smoother surface chains??? Thanks again Dave

Both pads are the same; it's just the bracket that holds them that is different. Part of the reason many don't go with gears is the run-out issue, and the other is the cost of parts and labor. In the early Twincam years, the tensioners weren't an issue. Take my '99; I picked it up in September '98 and put 80,000 miles on it before installing my hotrod motor in '03. Out of curiosity, I decided to tear it apart, measure, and inspect everything to see how much it had worn. It was less than half of the recommended wear limits; theoretically, I could have gotten 300,000 miles out of it. The tensioners were in great shape as well. When Harley tested the Twincam before its debut, they got a million miles on it without issues. As a tech in those days, I never had one customer with failed tensioners. I feel that the main culprit was that Harley didn't think about most bikes sitting most of their lives, and just like seals not having frequent lubrication, the tensioners become brittle. In 2008, I had to sell my Dyna to build my house, but as luck would have it, in 2016, I got it back. It had sat for 8 years, so when I got it back, I removed all the cam cover to polish it; I checked the tensioner as well, and it was still like brand new. A few thousand miles later, the rear came apart, and that's when I started using Cyco gaskets pads. The chains polish up really well in just the break-in period from rubbing against the pads. The springs aren't really that tight; I mean, you don't want to put your finger in it, but I don't think that's the issue. The main reason Harley had to go to a chain is to meet EPA noise regulations; the chain is quieter than gears.

I apologize for the lengthy question. I did not know how to contact you on another forum. First, thank you for your great instruction video on the twin cam tension replacement. I've been an auto mechanic for years, so I'm going to tackle this job, even though I've never worked on motorcycle engines. I'm going to get the cyco brand you recommend. I just bought this 2002 Road King in emaculate condition. I'm paranoid now based on learning about this issue, and wisdom would dictate opening it up and taking a look. I have a couple questions for your expertise. I wish I lived close to you so I could hire you to do the job...but, since I don't...... This year bike, I was told, was manufactured with the better bearings I guess....Timkin or whatever they are. The owner had a screaming eagle kit installed, so I don't know if that upgraded anything in question... Could you send me a list of all the parts I'll need to change out the chain guides. If I open it up, I might as well change them while im in there, regardless if they look pretty decent. There's 35000 miles on the engine. Do I have to have the cams pressed out in order to change out the rear pad??? Or can I just pull them out with the unit, and leave them attached. Also, I'm going to cut the push rods and install the adjustable type....could you give me a good brand to use.. ?? Oh of course, it may already have them, but at this point I don't know Thanks again for all your great info....I was thrilled to subscribe to your channel.
@DeathProofProductions
@DeathProofProductions 4 месяца назад
All you will need is a cam cover gasket and the cam plate and oil pump o-rings. The cams have to be pressed out to remove the rear tensioner. so It would be a great time to install a set of performance cams. as far as push rods go, look for the best deal you can find. they are all about the same. If you have any questions feel free to contact me through the channel's email, You can find it on our home page. Thanks for the compliment on the vid and subscribing.

@@DeathProofProductions I just read where there is a tool available, or a simple means of not having to press out the cams to replace the tension pad in the rear....that, to me, will be better yet ! Let us know when you find out, and have a solid assessment of the cyco pads. (If you don't already). Thx

Sorry for delayed response been covered up speaking with Congress in d.c. advocating for the traumatic brain injury act. Yes there is a tool it's about 150 bucks so I don't recommend it to often to folks, it's a one purpose tool. To me buying a harbor freight bench top press is a better choice its a third of the cost and it can be used for other projects. I've got pads at the shop, get on eBay and search for the pads when you scroll down you will see my logo. These pads I can guarantee are cyco and not knockoffs because I pic them up at the factory in Arkansas not far from my shop.

@@DeathProofProductions Speaking to Congress.....😱...I didn't realize you were so impotent...🤣 Anyway thanks for the response. I wouldn't necessarily mind buying the tool, since I'm the kind of guy who will keep an eye on this weakness, and deal with it in a timely fashion. I'm not sure at the moment what your logo looks like, but I'll get on cycos website a check it out....I'm assuming there may be a little discount involved by utilizing your logo. Thanks again for all your great information, and taking the time to put it out here...!!

The channel logo is what I meant to say. I'm not important just a survivor, had a open head injury in 2014 and was brought back to life and despite my brain damage I can still speak clearly. My doctors felt I could help sway Congress with my story. The channel logo you see buy the description is my cracked open head and the piston's are facing down are for the bike I flipped.

Thanks for the info on the gaskets I am ordering some today. I am going with your suggestions when doing my cam chain tensioners on my 2002 88. Last time I looked the inside tensioner had hardly any wear. I am thinking that I only need to replace the outer cam chain tensioner. Any recommendations on what brand adjustable push rods to go with?
@DeathProofProductions
@DeathProofProductions 6 месяцев назад
I've done that before to, no need to replace something that's still good. I buy mostly s&s but that's just because they were the big brand in the 90's back when I got started in this stuff. I've installed multiple deferent brands in customer's bikes and there all good. If it was me I would see what I could find on sale our a good used set on ebay.

Thanks, not sure I trust my bike to Ebay parts because of all the counterfeiting going on. I did order the Cyco push rod covers. Why are some push rods labeled easy install and fast install @@DeathProofProductions

Both are really just a design change from the original style to reduce the amount of revolutions it takes to get to zero lash, saves a smidge of time. Each one uses a different design I assume for marketing and patent reason but ones really no better than the other.

Hey man, got an 04 road king with a 95" in it. In the future im gonna rebuild it, but not sure if i want to do a 100" kit and keep the stock crank, true and weld of course, or get a sns stroker and make it a 106"....which will invole boring the cases. What would you do with it man? Or should i use the money for a road king special with an M8 114.
@DeathProofProductions
@DeathProofProductions 7 месяцев назад
If it was me I would get the flywheel's. You already have the bigger cylinder so then with the flywheel's you would be 103. Use the money u saved on machining the case's and have head work done.

Hi There, I just purchased a 2006 heritage softail, 23,000kms ( 14,200 miles) . Doesn't look like the previous owner dealt with the cam tensioners. Did Harley make any improvements to the tensioners by 2006 or are they still a high risk. Thank you !
@DeathProofProductions
@DeathProofProductions 5 месяцев назад
Yes, I recommend replacement at that low of miles and age the lack of regular lubrication they can become brittle. They may look to be in spec but I've had it happen to me and learned that lesson. If you decide to go with cyco gaskets replacement shoes I recommend getting them from my eBay account just look for the thumbnail with the channel logo. Some people ar selling knockoffs and calling them cyco brand but I know mine are because there in the correct package and I pic them up at the factory in Arkansas not far from my shop.

It's me again brother, don't mean to bug you, but I have a couple questions I told you I'm going to check and replace my timing tension pads on my 2002 Road King. I was thinking.....wouldn't it be a good idea to replace the lifters while I'm in there? I always feel suspect about the longevity of roller lifters... what brand would you suggest if so. Also, as I've told you I'm thinking about adjustable push rods for easier, quicker install. Are there drawbacks to adjustable ones?? Which brand? I'm just trying to plan ahead for what's best before I actually start the project. Lastly, I'm curious....I just bought this bike from a mutual old coot who took emaculate care of it. He's not available to ask, so I'm wondering. It hasa screaming eagle package. How would I know which package it has???? Your thoughts on this meistro???? Thx
@DeathProofProductions
@DeathProofProductions 4 месяца назад
In the 25 years that the twincam has been alive I personally have never seen a lifter fail, I seen a few evolution lifter failure but they made improvements in them for the twincam. That being said ultimately it's your call. There are only benefits from running adjustable rods. Harley had them in bikes all the way up to the evo. There all the same really, just look for the best deal. If you have access to a bore scope you can look at the top of the piston to see if it's marked 1550. That was a common upgrade customer's wanted back in the early years. Let me know if you need anything in the future.
