I'm using coral red with dark blue for my design agency. The coral red adds something playful and creative, the blue adds trust and a more "bussiness-y" kind of feel. Great video once again!

Loved the video and the new set. Please do more like this. One thing I don't think I hear anyone talk about when discussing colour psychology, is there a difference in meaning between a light colour or dark colour? For example dark blue vs light bue are they equal on the psychology side of things?

I liked the video but one thing, Apple’s logo is greyish more like white not black. The color black works because it’s the color that works with the BG which in this case is white so they choose a black color logo against the white background it’s not that the brand color is black.

Will! You make some great videos for upcoming designers, and professionals too..GREAT VIDEOS...yet in this one, you're unfortunately doing what a lot of people do and mixing colour psychology with colour symbolism. Your vids are better than a lot out there, so wanted to point this out so you don't fall into the trap like a lot of people on social media. (Just in case anyone reading this doesn't know, colour theory includes, colour psychology AND colour symbolism (and additionaly colour personal association).) :)

In Norway we have a bank that's called Sparebank 1. They have a color choise that makes me not trust them. They have a red circle with the number 1 inside of it, then often blue surrounding the red circle. This makes me just think of a political party in Norway called the Progress Party, which is a right-wing party with a lot of prejudice towards immigrants and does poorly on protecting human rights and justice. Their party has a logo that is a red apple with the letters FRP inside of it. It also tends to use blue along side this red apple. So when I see the logo of Sparebank 1, I think of this political party, which is in this case not a good thing.

Color Psychology always seems a bit pseudoscience-y to me. I wonder if there’s actual research behind it. If anything, the color psychology is very culturally influenced and can’t be applied cross-cultural.

@soulglowdeej

I hear you...Yet colour psychology (true colour psychology), is a real thing...unfortunately the terms colour psychology and colour symbolism have got interchanged so much over social media, they're getting confused. What you're hinting at is colour symbolism, and you're 100% correct in that they're heavily culturally influenced; add in to that any personal association, and the meanings become less and less meaningful. (Kandinsky's colour symblism is heavily based on western cultures, which is what a lot of people fall back on.) Colour psychology on the other hand speaks to how different colour harmonies affect the different personality types, and that's irrespective of culture, gender etc; it's purely down to the psychological personality type, and how brightness and saturation of hues, and pairing them together, affect people differently. Will's mentioned he might do a video on this....so watch this space :) ....no pressure Will 😂😉

I don't know what the blue meant untill am bombarded by people saying it's open and blah blah. This is how they give meaning to the colour. So stupid. Its like there is some kind organization going around giving colours a meaning which they want you to believe.
@studiozodus

You're a great designer and a great teacher, but you're a bit off on the 'color psychology' part. Simply because not everyone acts or feels the same about certain colours. Some people see red and think 'danger' and others would say 'love'. If you say i choose this colour because it makes people feel X or Z, you are allready talking nonsense. Some people hate purple, others love it. But a person that hates purple, could still buy something from a brand that uses purple and don't even care. The reason people can see colours, is because it helped us evolutionary to recognise things faster. Blue skies, red fruit, yellow flowers etc, helped people survice and thrive. Red is a signal colour for us, because red fruit means life, but red blood could mean death. Therefore, without context, a certain colour could mean anything and it depends on the mood, place and environment how we feel about it. In this day and age, colours are so omnipresent, that we hardly notice them that much at all, let alone have a billboard influence our mood just by the color the brand has. It only helps us recognise the sender of the message easier. So, therefore the most important aspect in choosing colour is how it adds to the distinctiveness of a brand. Especially if you are a challenger brand and you want to set it apart from its competitors. For example, Red Bull has blue, silver and red in its branding, but Monster Energy chose green and black, to really stand apart from their biggest competitor. Even tough they are aiming for the same audience and even use the same 'extreme sports' marketing strategy. If colour psychology would play a huge role, it would be the most important factor for either ones succes. Also, green would hardly be a colour associated with extreme energy or sugared soda drinks. Its purely a choice of getting recognised as a brand. That's why even a colour like magenta or pink can be used for a toy company, an ice cream company, bakery, bank or a telecom provider. Its just how it helps them stand out from the other brands in their category. And as an extra important aspect, it can help protect the brands trademark in legal matters. So ditch the 'colour psychology' part, because its not helpful and just leads to more generic branding for a category. Eco=green, health=blue etc.

I disagree that we should use color psychology as the main factor when selecting color. I think it’s a very tiny part of the decision. You need to take into account competitors, differentiation, where the brand is going to be applied, target audience, cultural significance and industry paradigms. You don’t see passion or excitement when you see the CNN logo. The brand actually stands for trust. Hence it’s slogan: “The most trusted name in news” (which is very deteriorated by the way). So by this logic, CNN should have chose blue if they want to personify trust. There’s a lot more to think about here. Just my opinion
