We own a 2019 gmc slt Sierra 4X4 1500 1/2 ton. We tow a travel trailer that is 28ft with the original equalizer weight distribution sway control hitch combo. If we ever decide to up grade our truck, we probably will go for a 3500 AT4 or Denali 3500, or settling for any of the 2500 models that are 4X4.

For a new "tower" i would suggest a 3/4 ton GASSER. But the other side of that coin is that weight can create issues if you get over confident on road especially.

Hey Shane.... If your looking for a diesel, maybe look into the Ram 2500 HD rebel Diesel....

I'd love to see a Pause or a Roamer-1/X195 5th wheel model. And instead of having a side door, have a back door with a rear covered deck. A' la train cars.

It's about tongue weight, brakes and power... Gas big blocks or PRE-Def Diesels....👍

@SkylinersYeti 9 месяцев назад
Agree, I would not own a modern diesel, they are not the same as the pre-def diesel. The only reason for a diesel if if you are towing a 15,000 # trailer

I dont like diesel off road, nor turbos. The power delivery is too inconsistent for precision. But on road its VERY NICE. The cost of maintenance and repairs MUCH less nice for the diesel.

And then we can throw in the class names. 1 =1/2t, 2= 3/4t, 3=1t, 4= 450/4500, 5=550/5500, 6, etc… just to confuse people even more, although I find referring to them by their class easier.

There is two types of towing. Highway and off Road. They are different. Do not be confused by published numbers for your trailer or truck. My X 195 says its tongue weight is 560# and unit weight is 5,500# I took my X 195 across scales and the correct tongue weight for my rig loaded is 1,200 # and my unit weight is 7,000 # . If you try to tow your X 195 with a half ton pickup that is rated to haul 5,500# and a cargo weight of 1,000# you will become quite unhappy over time. It is important to learn the max weight limits for towing and payload. I currently tow my X 195 with an International 4700 flat bed. On the highway I do not even know they trailer is behind me. Off road that is a different situation it is not an off road truck. I am looking for a Unimog as my next tow truck,. If I can not find that then a beefed up Power Wagon. Why invest in a very capable off road trailer and not have a very off road capable tow rig. Sorry about the rant.

Sprinkled very sparingly throughout all the wrong and false information is some useful stuff. It's just hard to sift it out. For example: The F250 Tremor and the F350 Tremor has exactly the same suspension. It is false to say that the payload on the F250 is 4k lbs and the F350 is 7klbs and that means a terrible ride, it's all about trim level and options. The F350 Platinum Tremor will have a payload of around 2700 lbs and have the exact same suspension as the F250 Tremor. You compared a Bronco to a Gladiator instead of a Wrangler? Why? It would have been much more useful to talk about towing capacity, payload, GAWR, GCWR in relation to trailer weights, tongue weight, dynamic load. Help people know how to determine the right truck using actual math. It's not hard if broken down and explained properly. Towing the Pause with the F150 for example you never mentioned payload and how little is left over for passenger and gear although you almost gave useful guidance regarding overall weight and the trailer driving the truck. I appreciate you staying away from the brand debate as they all offer something different and are all generally capable. Determining the right capability then finding a truck to match makes sense. After that let price, options, reliability and preference be your guide. Why would anyone get an F350? I laughed out loud when I heard that. I'll pose this question in response Given the same ride, options, suspension towing would you pay a couple hundred more for more payload? If yes then the F350 is the right truck. The way manufacturers configure their models is complicated and requires research. What sets them apart isn't what you may think. One truck might have an overload spring while another won't. Having nothing to do with ride but everything to do with payload. One might have a beefier axel, again not ride but durability and payload. The rated towing capacity is just the beginning of a very long list of things to consider when choosing a tow vehicle.

This is exactly what is wrong with the whole topic. You are the type of person that would confuse people way more… actually, I was not driving a tremor so why are you even mentioning it. “Blah blah blah I am so so smart is all I heard” from you. What are you talking about ride quality is the same from a 2500 to a 3500? Have you ever driven or owned a truck?

The point was to try and be very basic. There is a lot of info to go into and if they spent an hour talking about it maybe they could have be more thorough. Saying wrong and false info is being communicated is bold and rude.

All about payload, tongue weight and stopping power. A 1976 Pinto can tow a train, it just can't stop it. Most people overlook payload and tongue weight. Experience and miles won't save you in court if you have an accident. (come on Shane, you're better than this; bragging about towing speed).
@ShaneStauffer777

Your picking and choosing what you are hearing. This was basic info. I didn’t tell people payload or tongue weight doesn’t matter? I said 2500 diesel is what I recommended for our bigger trailers and obviously they fall within the weight.

2 door broncos can tow 3500lbs, but the 4 door can tow 5000lbs. the 2024 4 door jeep wranglers upped their tow capacity to 5000lbs to compete with the bronco.

What's the payload?
@spec24
@spec24 7 месяцев назад
Wrong! From Ford: The 2023 Ford Bronco towing capacity reaches a maximum of 3,500 pounds with the base model. The Ford Bronco Raptor, as the suped-up, top-of-the-line trim, adds another 1,000 pounds to provide a maximum towing capacity of 4,500 pounds. The Ford Bronco’s towing capacity stays the same until you get to the Raptor trim level.

@@spec24 oh nice! So a 2 door bronco tows 5000? Well, that just made my decision a little easier.

Axels and tires are the biggest difference across the lines. F150 or 1500 can have 3x the horsepower I have in an f350 but the axels snap at loads that mine laugh. My bed can be loaded and the trailer with no issue.

Is the air suspension good for offroading. The new Dodge Ramcharger is coming ount 2025 with 4 wheel air suspension. It is a 1500 with the specs and weight of a 2500. How would this truck do? Again, what about 4 wheel air suspension vs normal suspension? Thanks.
@ROAOffRoad
@ROAOffRoad 9 месяцев назад
@jmrdrgz Air suspension is great for off-roading! It can make your ride more comfortable and potentialy increase control. Electric vehicles aren't our personal preferrence for towing (the technology isn't quite there to make it worthwhile), but aside from that, according to the specs, it should do fine.
