you also gotta take into account thw cost of living in the areas of companies a and b, more income doesn't mean more disposable income.

Good point, but if you're considering relocating for the job, that makes the whole thing much more complicated than anything you could fit into a short. - distance to family/support network? - taxes? - social considerations (nightlife, clubs, church, etc) - community perks

You should not be relocating for a $40k salary
@JacquelineUnderwood
@JacquelineUnderwood Год назад
@@gummy5862ehhhh depends, if that 40k salary also has included housing, potentially. I’ve worked jobs that had certain benefits like housing and transportation included. I would recommend that if that’s included, have very clear set standards in the contract on what that entails. For example, what does a furnished apartment mean? I was given an apartment without a couch and just dealt with it despite being told it was supposed to be furnished (I could have asked I was just nervous and it was my first big job). What does transportation entail? Is it a paid bus/train pass, Uber, Gas allowance, etc? There are jobs that include meals and childcare, what do those look like? If you are sick, are you still entitled to company childcare? (Because let’s be real, having childcare when you’re sick is a lifesaver particularly if you’re a single parent and just need a bit of time to recover). So yeah no, consider total compensation before writing it off. If the company is paying major expenses for you, 40k might actually end up functionally feeling like 60k because you’re not having to pay rent or have free childcare or amazing health insurance when you need that health insurance

For example, how much vacation is valued based on my salary at each and then add that into the toral compensation. Then you can go back to one of the companies to negotiate if you have a preference based on vibe. My last job couldn't offer me more vacation or retirement match but they did increase my salary by 12k and allowed me to take unpaid time off. This helped to compemsate for both my concerns.

In Australia, that retirement fund is called Superannuation. It's been illegal not to have one since 1980. It automatically gets set up for you either by your first employer or the government when you start working. The money is paid into the account as apart of your salary. Some companies add it separately, other companies may take a small portion of your overall income to cover it. You won't be able to access it until you either register for retirement, reach a certain age, or submit a request for acess in an emergency situation.

The state provides healthcare and a state pension and the employer is also required to pay into a workplace pension by law, we are also required to get 28 days of paid holiday per year or equivalent if working part time (if you only work 2 and a half days you should only get 14 days holiday- that sort of thing). For the record being a startup can be a reason to go to or stay away from a company. If a sartup has good vibes and you have the option to get in on the ground floor it could be way better for your career long-term. It could also implode in your face if it fails. It's riskier but has an opportunity for greater reward in the end. Mostly because in a startup you're likely going to have way more opportunity for upward mobility and creativity because there's no established pecking order yet. Especially if they have some sort of stock investment plan. Like if you can get shares on a startup and help build it to a successful company and it actually takes off, you're going to be way more prosperous than an established company working a regular 9-5. But there's no guarantee that's what will happen. But it's definitely worth keeping in mind if you're debating between two job offers.

Well you also need to get to meet your coworkers to see which ones are nicer, you may be satisfied in the job or not depending on that.

Ngl, vibes r like 60-70% of what I’d base my decision off of. Working 12 hour night shifts at a hospital, so I NEED coworkers to be supportive and kind 💀 Left my other job because the vibes were atrocious

Here we can see why there is a wage gap, because some people prefer things over raw income

From a third world country here! Always love seeing these videos and seeing the comparison from here were our minimum wage is technically $1 an hour and in corporate jobs from Companies that are American or European based dont offer anything close to those salaries or benefits here.

Nope, here's how you actually choose, highest paying job offer you got, take it and no matter what find time to skill yourself up and have a minimalist lifestyle, cheap apartment, and make your own, food survival style, luxuries you need is sleep, till 1 year mark save up money and start looking for job opportunities at 6 month mark, and expand your network and try for better opportunities, get a few more offers for better pay and switch at about 1 to 1.5 year mark and do the same for next till the pay is substantial enough to get all your essentials covered with more than 50% to save and learn and create a business model and try different things and study and research before trying and when you find your specialization and area of excellence create a business based on it, and you can get create something with 5 years time, and if it pays well enough and is sustainable go for full time.

If you are new to your career, don’t go with a start-up. You are learning your skills while they are learning how to be a business. Only one new party at a time. The start-up needs to hire people with experience.

I need to pay bills more than I need to vacation or like my employer. I need money and if that means not going to the doctor or on vacation that's what I have to do. I don't have an option to take a pay cut. This is the reality for a lot of people and there is nothing we can do about it until the system changes.

Step1: find these "unicorn" companies that offer decent pay that isn’t minimum wage, proper benefits like health coverage and not a Foosball table, and a good and non-toxic work environments that also reach out to applicant during a recession and doesn’t constantly complain "theres a labor shortage".

I would think career growth prospects, training in new skills, promotion policy, overseas deployment etc would count more than Vibe and vacation days. This short is supposed to be good advice?
