How to Clean a Rifle Barrel: ctdshooting

Thank you for the kind words. You are exactly right. I am a fan of scope shield scope covers, but anything (even an old shop rag) will help protect the valuable scope.

Sorry for my delayed response, I was in New Mexico at a tournament. To quickly answer your question = the bullet touches the bottom of the grooves. Longer answer = land diameter is slightly smaller than the groove diameter which "grips" the bullet making it spin to the twist rate of the rifle. Bullets usually measure slightly larger than the groove diameter. Otherwise some of the gasses/pressure would escape around the sides of the bullet. For example: on a 30 cal barrel the land diameter (sometimes called minor diameter) is roughly .300". The groove diameter (major) is .308. 30 cal bullets measure .308x. Please keep in mind there are machining tolerances that may influence those numbers slightly. Hope this helps

We were just talking about this last weekend at a tournament in SD. Some of the "more experienced" shooters indicated that frame of mind started when a company made stainless steel brushes. I would not use those - simply because I do not know enough about them. I've seen many Hall of Fame shooters who are also gunsmiths, bullet makers, barrel makers, and machinists use bronze brushes. Besides those guys, my borescope has proven to me that bronze brushes do a good job of getting rid of the fouling with no harm done to the tube. However, you have to do what you are comfortable doing. If you do not feel comfortable putting a bronze brush down a barrel, then don't do it. Thanks for the comment. Good shooting
