Fishing reels can get pretty filthy after repeated use. To get the most out of your fishing reels, it's important to keep your reels clean. Dirt and grime will build up on the bearings and other internal parts of your fishing reels, so you need to know how to properly disassemble your reel and clean it effectively. In this video, Tackle Junky 81 breaks down the entire process for you from start to finish on how to clean a spinning reel.

Terrific video! Most of my reels are spinning and I clean them every year. Except the last part with the bail, I was unaware of the baring. Thank you for the quick tip!!! I will be upgrading my cleaning now!!

I started watching some videos on RU-vid on how to oil / maintenance spinning reels, and your video was about the only one that addressed removing and lubricating the line roller. I started to clean my reels and did not intend on doing this extra step; primarily because I didn't think any of my reels had bearings in the line roller. It was only up until I came across your video, that I realized that their are parts under the line roller. Some reels have bearings in the line roller and some use lubricated plastic washers. Anyhow, I ended up removing the line roller on one of my reels, and low and behold, it was rusted beyond belief. After seeing that, I decided to take apart the line roller on the rest of my reels, and the same thing had occurred on every reel. I actually had to use an impact driver on two of the line rollers, just to get the screw out. I could not get them out by hand and did not want to risk stripping the screws. One screw did end up breaking. So that's how stuck it was in there. The point of this is that, I don't think enough people are addressing maintaining the line roller. This will now be the 1st thing I maintain on my reels before anything else. I am almost certain that the reason this happens, is because the line roller is the one part of the rod that is exposed to the most salt. When you think about it, every time you cast your line out into the water, your line gets coated with salt water. That salt water is then transferred to the line roller, and any residual amount transfers to the bearings (if any) of the line roller. Check your reels for this and I'm pretty sure you'll be surprised at what you find. This issue creates resistance that can be felt when reeling in smaller fish; and proper maintenance of the line roller will allow your line to roll with the line roller, instead of against it. After I lubricated all of my line rollers, I then took a rubber band, cut it and ran it back and forth across the line roller (in a V shape) to make sure it was properly lubricated.

Great comment. That is why for salt water I prefer a plastic bushing over a bearing. Almost every bearing in the end will rust. (from Holland)

The orientation of the gears is only important if your reel has an oval oscillating gear. There will be a marking on the oscillating gear and another marking on the main drive to show you where the alignment should be.

There are bearings in the handle knob that gets dirty quicker from your hands. So it would be a good idea to clean and oil those bearings or bushings.

So I have a couple spinning reels that are almost 20 years old but lightly used. I noticed last time I used them I couldn't cast very far almost like it wasn't spinning freely when casted. I was going to try to clean them they never have been cleaned. The real question is do u think they can be saved? Or is it possible they are too far gone?

I did not read all the comments, so please forgive me if I am duplicating another comment. CORRECTION: what is shown as "drag stack" (2:57) is incorrect. The drag stack is in the spool. That washer allows for spool height adjustment. Thus, the spool could be lowered or positioned higher on the drive shaft. Less or more of these little washers make the line to wrap on the spool straight. Rather than cone shaped toward the front or back of the spool. If you do not believe me, check RU-vid. All the best.

Yes the handle. You'll see a knob on the opposite side of the reel body from the handle. Unscrew it and the handle will come loose. Wipe the handle shaft down with cleaner and swab out the hole with more cleaner. then apply a small amount of oil or grease to the handle shaft. put the shaft back into the hole and screw in the knob on the other side of the reel body. crank the reel for a few minutes to work in the grease and then your all set!

will gun oil work for saltwater reels?
@jasl7358
@jasl7358 3 года назад
In certain areas yes. The main gear and pinion gear really need grease. I recommend Cal's. Works great on the drag washers and on the gears. A drop of oil works well for the bearings. Gun oil is fine. Do not over apply the oil to the interior of the gearbox because it will thin the gear grease too much. Hope this helps eight months late 😂

So I have a different way on doing the reals! I would say my method is potentially MUCH better to clean things! I want to break it down between faults on your side! 1) although you cleaned the middle and then re applied oil, the problem you have is lots and lots of dust has already been inside all you’re doing is cleaning the shaft and adding more oil to attract more dust. My method is the below! 3 big buckets! Bucket 1) remove the top part of the reels and everything else that’s in the middle! Put them all in the bucket, fill up the bucket with warm water add 5 tablets of steradent! They will fizz like crazy the bubbles travel inside and remove ALL grime and junk, leave to soak for 1 full hour, and then spin reels underwater! Bucket 2) add warm water and fairy liquid! Throw it all in there add the reels let it stand for 15 minutes! After 15 minutes spin the reels underwater to remove ALL debris and old oil! Let them soak for 15 minutes more! Bucket 3) add JUST warm water! Throw everything in and spin the reels to remove absolutely all soaps and other debris and stuff! Soak for 10 minutes! And remove! Put reels on mats and let them dry for a FULL day! The next day apply 1 and only 1 tear drop of oil on the BOTTOM of the shaft groves! Spin spin spin the reel! Add 1 tear drop of oil to the sides of the metal clasp! And remove the side part of the reel where the arm holds it and drop 1 more teardrop there! Spin everything add it all together and you’re GOLDEN! I have had reels that have lasted me and still last for over 25 years! Currently using my Nash scope 4000! Did the above method once every 6 months to a year on all my reels! Put too much oil + on top of the old oil it’ll attract dust and it’ll destroy your reels! So my method and you will NEVER buy another set of reels and they will spin better than new! 😍 My 3 pence!
