I had a furnace repair man come to my house to fix my furnace which would not light. He charged me $200 and was here for 15 minutes. Told me my heat exchanger was cracked, amongst other things that needed to be replaced. He told me it would be $6000 to fix it and that I would be better off getting a new one from him. I didn’t have the money to fix or replace, so I called my uncle who is pretty handy and knew somebody in the furnace business. He was able to get a camera and verify that the heat exchanger was not cracked! He got all the parts that that guy had said I needed at wholesale and replace them for me… None of this worked. We spent three days trying to get this furnace to work and never could. Stumbled upon your video, and with the help of a $4 brush from Home Depot was able to get the furnace up and running and it has been running perfectly for the last month!! Thank you for your helpful video, it was very well done and easy to follow. I will be subscribing, and supporting your channel. Thank you for the helpful advice, I wish I had found you earlier! Thanks!

Yeah I knew my inducer blower was failing, but it's been a few years since a professional has looked at my furnace so I paid for a diagnostic. He confirmed that it's failing, and quoted me over $1k for replacement. He then started talking about how old it is and with the price I should get a consultation for a new furnace. I ordered a new inducer online for $150.

I paid $200 to have my central heating serviced. He didn't do any of this. As the heater sometimes shut down,, his testing said that main control board was faulty. $580 price tag. Did Not replace the board. After he left, checked YT, found your channel and.............. I cleaned the flame sensor, and unit has not failed in 4 months. Thank you.

If you can do that, look into changing out the igniter (they go bad!) and have one on hand for backup!!!! . Very very easy to diagnose and change out. I had mine go out after one year, in the winter, and a buddy (HVAC guy) just happen to be there visiting.. Had one on his truck.. lucked out.. Cheap online... $$ if you call someone..

Oh my gosh!!! Your instructions were so spot on!! I have a very similar furnace as the one you've shown. I had the cover off my furnace while watching your video and now I am about to dive in and clean those burners. I can see exactly what is causing my furnace to trip, the dust and rust in the exact spots you said would cause it not to ignite. Thank you very much!!! Your awesome!! 11-17-23

Can't thank you enough for this video. Our sx had been having trouble lighting up. You could hear it trying to light the burners but would only be successful after about the 3rd to 4th try. Got up in the attic and did exactly what you suggested with the burners themselves which weren't too bad. Decided I'd go ahead and clean the flame sensor and the gas orifices as well. Put it all back together and turned it on and off twice just to be sure it was gonna work. Total success! I'm a 50-something yo female and if I can do it, anyone can. Thanks again!

I just want to say "Thank You"!! I have spent the last 3 Winters and about $300 trying to figure out why my furnace would only light some times. I have changed out almost every single part possible besides the blowers and inducer and was ready to give up and buy a new furnace. I happen to stumble across your video. I went downstairs at 1:30am and pulled the burners out and the wings were plugged full of rust. Put it all back together and it lit the very first time and it usually never lights the first time and will usually lock out at least twice a day. Thank you again so much!

@@WordofAdviceTV I have a quick question. I have a Trane XR95 furnace and the burners are supposed to be stainless steel, but why do they rust? A quick search says that LP gas can cause rusting issues, but seems odd that it would happen to stainless steel. It appears that the middle of the burner has a iron insert. Either way I may just buy some new burners as they seem fairly inexpensive.
@rwarrich
@rwarrich 4 года назад
@@wisneaky, I work in a manufacturing plant and we use stainless steel of various grades. Stainless steel will rust, just takes longer than regular steel. Heat is a big factor in causing any steel to rust (hobbyist blacksmith), the better grades of stainless take longer to be affected.
@ellieprice363
@ellieprice363 Год назад
@@rwarrich Humidity is also a factor. My furnace is in my shop and goes weeks without use unless I need it. So far no trouble except a failed igniter, but now I know how to clean the burners thanks to this video.

Thanks for your video!!! It just saved me $$$ to have my furnace repaired. My 8 yr old american standard 3 burner furnace started short cycling last year, so I thought it's the flame sensor and spend about $30 cad to order a new sensor. However, after installing the new sensor the problem did not go away. After watching your videos I tried to start the furnace with the burning chamber open and realised that the 3rd burner would not ignite most of the time. I tried cleaning orifices with plastic toothpick but still the problem did not go away. Only after watching this video I decided to remove the burners to have them cleaned up and found out the the ignition channels between the second and third burners were clogged. Cleaned up the ignition channels and the burners and put everything back and tadam now the furnace ignites 100% of the time. Also noticed the flame color of the 3rd burner has changed from yellow blue to pure blue!!! Thanks a lot for the educational videos! Keep up the good work!!!

Wow! I watched your video on the top furnace problems out of 315 service calls. I replaced the flame sensor. Only two burners were still lighting to the right. I cleaned the orifices several times, then, only one burner was lighting and I was really puzzled. I then, pulled out the burners like you said and I brushed the disc and the fins and blew them out. Mine is similar to yours. I took one out at a time so that I wouldn't get them mixed up or installed upside down. Man! They lit so fast! They didn't look that dirty. But they were clogged obviously. Looks as they say can be deceiving. It's amazing on how a little dirt can block that air-gas mixture. Thank you! Thank you! You are a great instructor.

Fantastic video! So helpful to have the information needed to do important maintenance on our furnace that needs to be done more than once per year, but rarely gets done as often as necessary because product literature tells you only to have a technician perform the service, which costs hundreds of dollars for even a simple procedure. We could hear a couple of the burners light, but then the unit would shut off. After 3 tries, a fault showed on the thermostat, that just said Ignition Lockout, call Bryant. No one can come until February. With this video we fixed it ourselves. Thanks so much!

Issue: Trane XV90 with two red flashes, meaning lockout after too many attempts. Starting up, the igniter glowed, the gas started and ignited, but didn't "jump" to the other burners and subsequently the flame sensor was not satisfied and shut it down (I heard the pressure switch engage, so air intake wasn't the problem). Well, cleaned the flame sensor and that wasn't the entire problem. The fins on the burners had some rust on them (from a previous old water condensate leak). Cleaned that up so the flame could move from one side to the other, and all back to good. Pretty easy to take all of that apart and take the burners out. Great video, along with all of the other ones posted on Word of Advice here. Thank you!

It's nice that you are sharing this with homeowners who may or may not have any mechanical ability. I think that safety is paramount therefore it would be wise to shut the power first and the gas feed too. Gloves so they don't cut themselves on sharp edges and a dust mask. Also a small dust vac.for a final clean up..Just my two cents

Only because you asked for a service technicians point of view, and because you've got the general public doing this, you may want to mention they should turn the power off and the gas off before proceeding. Joe Blow homeowner gets up and walks away because the phone rings and the furnace kicks on with the burners out.... You might also want to mention how to check the heat exchanger while they got the burners out and for areas that they can't see from the burner area. @@WordofAdviceTV I checked my furnace after watched your video, mine is a Gibson 2-stage one, the burner housing is a one piece metal, no top bracket, it's one piece with some cutouts to let burners go through. The individual burners are screwed on to the housing. I unscrewed an easiest one that doesn't have igniter, no flame sensor, no rollout switch, but I still couldn't back it out because the cutout on the housing is too small while the burner front is a little too big. I guess the burners can only go out from the front(opposite to the orifice). The whole burner housing has to come out to access the individual burners. Also, mine the gas manifold and the gas valve are blocking the burner housing, I think I may need to remove the gas manifold screws, and the screws to hold the burner housing to the furnace body, then tilt the burner housing to a position to get the whole thing out. Anyways, it's quite hard to get access to my individual burners. As I don't have problem now, I don't want to spend a whole day to get them out, probably do it when I have to.:-)

@yorkchen817 Oh boy.. Sounds like you have the bad style. I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about having to take all of that apart too so I understand how you feel. Haha no rush then ;) Some people never clean their burners and things seem alright. Stay warm!

Dude, you save me an emergency HVAC call. Turned out I had dust in the flame channels and my fourth burner with the flame sensor wasn't lighting. Pulled the burners out, blew em off and we've got heat again. I'd give you a tip but for some reason your channel doesn't let me! oh snap wait I found the paypal link. 10$ your way my friend.

Best videos of any kind. I would be curious as to how a badly clogged burner would perform. I, like some other lazy or ignorant people, have in the past gone many years without cleaning and not really knowing the effects.

Glad you find the videos useful! Very dirty burners impede the gas flow which results in a restriction in the gas flow. That messes with the air to gas proportions and causes the carbon monoxide emissions to go up, the furnace does not run as efficiently, and if the flames are slightly diverted from the middle - could damage the heat exchanger as well.

VERY, VERY, GOOD and well thought out video! Kudos to you for this truely original content and thank you for explaining it very clearly. It more than makes up for the video featuring water a few weeks ago :-) (sorry, I could not resist razzing you about that video again).

I'd like to see you do that on a carrier high efficiency furnace. Removing burners from a carrier is my least favorite repair to make on a furnace.
