Yea I don't think most people know about this maintenance item. Only reason I even thought about it is 1 the freezer ain't freezing. And 2 there's an split a/c at work that cools a room full of servers (dedicated computers). The condenser portion is outside of the room and gets a lot of dust build up and often looses cooling capacity. When this happens they clean the condenser coils and everything is good as new.

Just want to thank Jonny for helping me and my son tackle this job. I was going to grab a fridge dolly and take it outside and blow it down with the air compressor but we ended up using the shop vac along with some brushes for cleaning hummingbird feeders and it worked great. My fridge is now running so much cooler that I had to turn it down a notch and still have ice cold beer. Thanks again.

My refrigerator used to be my aunts, that she kept OUTDOORS for years. I never knew I have to clean the coils, and it has been working fabulous until recently I noticed it’s not cooling as it usually does. I just opened the back and saw so much dust and debris that I was pouring out of the cardboard cover… leaves dust hair you name it! After using a swiffer duster, butter knife wrapped with a microfiber towel, vaccuum hose with a straw taped to it, and a tooth brush, im proud to say it almost looks brand new again. Now we wait a few hours and see if this did justice :) thank you!

Having a refrigerator brush and a vaccuun cleaner to suck up loosened dust makes the task easy. Refrigerator brushes can be purchased at hardware stores of HD for $6-8. So, what did you find when you finally pulled off the grill and looked at your regrigerator coils? And how often do you clean the coils since that first time?

But with freezer working well, I cleared an ice pond out from it's trough (something I should have tackled already..) and allowed it to defrost 3 hrs not that it was frosty but in case ice was on the evap fan. Seems better after 12 hrs just not sure, so will pull fridge next to do this video's task..

We have a Frigidaire from the 80's that was maintained first by my dad who was a handyman who dabbled in appliance repair as a way to make extra money, and now by me. I'm 52 years old and have had the thing running almost constantly for about 20 years. No one I know has a better fridge/freezer than me. This thing keeps things COLD like it was... well, like it was the 80's! I will never in my life move to one of these new pieces of crap.

Its Sunday morning at 430 AM and by chance I got up 45 minutes ago, and opened the fridge door. It was open 2 minutes "MAYBE" and it started beeping. I took a look inside and could see condensation on the side walls. I closed the door and waited about 5 minutes and opened the door again and same thing, This time I noticed the temp was flashing "H". Since I had just food shopped yesterday- the fridge was fairly full. So I could not go back to sleep . I googled the model on line and in 5 minutes- located top 5 reasons- its beeping and it mentioned the coils and that you should clean them at least once per year. I've lived her 7 and have never cleaned them. I found this video and popped off the kick panel- and was like- OMG. I cleaned out some of the gunk with my brush. But will follow all your instructions when I get up this AM and should be good to go!! Thank you so much. Im 66 and just had my hot water heater repaired 2 days ago- and cant afford another service call. And this clean up- I can handle on my own

@@JonnyDIY Morning.....I cleaned everything and thought or hoped that would take care of it- but nope. It started beeping again a day later, and I watched a few more videos. It turned out that my damper door was not functioning and the whole assembly needs to be replaced. Long story short- limited air is flowing between the two sides and temp is fairly stable at 40 - providing I keep the door closed as much as possible. I ordered the assembly on Thursday and the part arrived at the KC- UPS facility yesterday. Hoping they will deliver it today and my SIL will install it. Otherwise tmrw after work.

Interesting question. And the answer is---- I don't know and can't recall any authoritative estimates. The biggest benefits are that you refrigerator will do it's job of keeping things cold better, especially during the peak of the summer season when things are hot. But there are bound to be power savings as well.

I have an older top-freezer refrigerator and recently ice has started forming in the refrigerator on food and on storage containers. So the first thing I did was declutter the refrigerator to make sure that airflow was circulating. But I still found ice the next day, so I used condensed air to spray out the dust that was in the back panel vent. I may need a brush to clean under the fridge. I hope cleaning it helps stop it from freezing everything.
@JonnyDIY

all good things to do, try not putting anything you dont want frozen towards the back of fridge as that's where usually happens. Could be thermostat not knowing when to shut off. Try dialing down the cold s lil make it warmer in fridge but keep it between 35-40 degrees F

There is probably a drain tube at the back of the freezer compartment, you may have to remove the inside back panel to spot it. If that tube is clogged, the automatic defrost cycle basically is useless and the freezer will ice up. There might also be one in the 'fridge compartment, but that one is usually at the bottom under the bottom drawer and easy to clean out. Also, if you have an ice maker there is possibly a cracked tank in the back of the fridge compartment leaking slowly. They don't build 'em like they used to! (Plus an OLD fridge will last decades. New ones are designed to last maximum 10 years!.

Some refrigerators do not allow access to the coils at all. I was desperate and used a leaf blower. A wet towel and barricading it on one side was my only option. A coil Brush did not work. Perhaps my refrigerator is way too old.

First I'd follow the directions and inspect and clean the coils if they have a lot of dust on them. The dust prevents the coils from getting rid of heat extracted from inside the refrigerator, so the refer's ability to cool things off declines. Also, when that happens the motor can overheat and prevent any cooling at all. So how is your refer working now, two months after posting you comment?
@Attohertz

Is there generally any concern if you have a condensate drip tray under the coils. I.e. water getting blown on circuit board? I only see one board to the right for what looks like the ice maker input...

Ummmm. I just cleaned the coils and grill on my refrigerator, and then decided to check out You Tube for ideas I might have used. I turned off the refrigerator using the dials rather than pulling the plug. Either method shuts off the fan which will circulate dust while you are cleaning. I think the methods demonstrated are fine. I have and use a refrigerator coil cleaner brush rather than a toothbrush and air compressor.. The refer coils brush does a pretty good and easy job of cleaning coils and I use a vacuum cleaner to suck up dust. When that is completed, I still pull out the refrigerator and vacuum up the loosened dust which simply fell to the floor. There is quite a lot of that, so this step is important. Doing this method twice/year should be adequate in most homes, but you can judge that based on the dust accumulated. Doing that before the hottest part of the year will give your refrigerator the easiest time of keeping things cold. This task took me about ten minutes to do, mainly since I knew where the refrigerator brush was to be found!

I cleaned the coil with a hair dryer and eye make up brushes as I didn't have access to a vacuum cleaner. The fridge turned back on fine, made it's usual running noise but after five minutes it went whisper quiet. The light is on. After a while it resumed the running sound. Holy hell, I hope I didn't make it worse. The temperature has crossed 40 degrees Celsius here and fridge wasn't cooling as well, milk was getting spoiled. Hopefully it will be fixed now. There was dust and some fluff here and there on the coil. Im wondering if just cleaning that would make all that difference.

Sometimes the condenser coils are completely covered with sheet metal. In that case, air doesn't circulate over the coils and they can't get impacted with dust. In that case, the heat is transferred through the sheet metal of the refrigerator, and you will find that part getting warm when the motor is operating. I have that arrangement on my very old freezer. Look Ma! No coils to clean! (But I have to defrost the freezer!)
