This is by far the best damn video on this particular topic. I looked everywhere for a good carb rebuild video - but the level of detail and explanation is unmatched in this video to any others. Thanks for posting this -- it's exactly what I needed.

Very complete and great with helpful hints such as the oil on gaskets and part numbers. Hint: For those that don't have the Tecumseh tool use a 11/64 drill bit to check the float bowl spacing and also to push the seat down using the top of the drill bit. Also an old hooked dentist scraping tool is great to remove the old seat and to poke clean the small holes.

@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 25 дней назад
Most of the time a surging engine is a engine running lean. Not enough fuel getting through the carburetor due to a blockage inside the carburetor most likely due to gas going bad inside it and gumming it up. If you have good fuel flowing to the carburetor? you have a clogged carburetor and you will need to rebuild or replace the carburetor.

Silicone grease works great for "o"rings. Silicone spray or LPS spray also are great for rubber and won't do any damage like petroleum products can and will over time. Great job pointing out the tiny holes. The one on the main jet was so solidly clogged I could almost not see it. I missed that on previous carb services. Lamp cord and other sizes of stranded wire are good sources for just the right size copper wire.I see the butterfly had the governor link rod in the wrong hole too. Can't wait to see if it runs way better. School lunch tray is a great idea. I lay down paper towel or cloth to stop any bounce. Thanks Brad, great video, great tips, cool you show the part numbers and how to find them too.

I just cleaned my exact carb with your skilled detailed video as an experienced tool maker I'd like to add these tips . 1) use a needle nose plyer when removing the spring in the float , that compressed spring will pop off and could land god knows where I learned the hard way. 2) cleaning the three holes in the butterfly I used one strand of bicycle brake cable, or perhaps a wire bread tie. 3) always use lubricant on "O" rings even the float it will slide on easier. I'm saving this video in my projects for future rebuilds it's the best on YT. Thumbs up Johnson

I rebuilt my carburetor 2 years ago On my Tecumseh 5hp Powersport. And its in my vintage Manco Terminator Gokart. And since it was ran off road. The doesn’t want to say running at idle. It start right up but once it running for a few seconds starts idle real low then dies. Only way to keep it running is to blip the throttle. Engine Great on power. Im try checking the idle circuits like the Idle mixture screw and main bowl Jet.

One of the best video's on carb rebuild and all the info. Question; many carb's are not original so which to use as the needle and seat are not the same. I'm sure many have aftermarket on older machines. Is their rebuild kits for them or replace carb. Do you recommend a good supplier for aftermarket carb because most come from china .
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Год назад
Hi Mike, I have tried some aftermarket Tecumseh carburetors in the past and found 95% did not work well at all. If a China Tecumseh carburetor goes bad, I do not rebuild it. It is just cheap enough to buy another cheap china carburetor and hope for the best. I do not know of a good supplier as I just go mostly on reviews.

Not sure what engine you have but first before rebuilding the carburetor you need to diagnose why it will not start. You need 3 things the engine needs to run. Technically 4. (1)Compression, pull the recoil rope and you should feel it go from easy to hard then easy to hard. It should be harder to pull when the piston is moving up to top of stroke. If you do not feel any compression, you most likely have internal issues (valves etc.) (2) Spark, you can easily check spark spraying a little fuel in the carburetor throat and give it a pull to see if it fires off. If it does, then you have compression and spark so that will then mean you have a carburetor issue. (3) fuel is needed so if you get #2 to work you now know that the carburetor is bad. (4)air of course which you already know you have. I would suggest making sure you have compression and spark. If you have those and you can get the machine to fire up, then it should be a carburetor issue after that. You may have missed a few steps. Always change your spark plug and gas to make sure they are new and fresh! Let me know how you make out.

Good Evening Sir, I was wondering if you could help me out, I have the HMSK80 on a snowblower and followed everything on your thorough video, but I ran into one difference, that being the needle seat. On mine, the rubber seat was missing, and when attempting to install a new one it made the float sit so high that I could not install the pin. The main difference that i see is that mine has a brass inlet where the needle goes into where yours looks completely cast. Does the brass inlet not take the rubber seat? Is there anything I should do with it besides spray it out? It seems to be sealing pretty good without the rubber seat. The old needle also did not have any kind of rubber on the tip.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 3 года назад
It sounds like you may have a aftermarket carburetor. Just clean the carburetor the best you can and as you have found out, do not use the rubber seat or needle valve in the kit. You must use your old needle valve if it is still ok because if you have a brass seat in your carburetor your needle valve will have a rubber tip on it and the one that comes in the kit will be aluminum.
@outwestjake

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines oh wow! Thank you very much. Unfortunately my old needle didn't have the rubber tip, so I'm wondering if it wasn't rebuilt right from the getgo.
