Hey Everyone, Today we're going to talk about one of the most important background tasks when it comes to producing great BBQ and that is cleaning your grill or smoker, today specifically cleaning the Char-Griller Gravity 980 Cooker. A lot of folks like to leave a grill dirty under the guise of it being a well "seasoned" cooker. The truth of the matter is all of that old grease in that cooker is not only gross but as it burns or gets onto your food from direct contact on the grate, at best case it can leave a foul taste, and at worst case you can actually get people sick and no one wants to do that. Now the gravity 980 is an awesome cooker that has a lot going on so cleaning it can be a little bit intimidating, however, with the materials used in the construction of this cooker it is actually a breeze to clean using mainly three tools. First I like using the Char-Griller wood paddle to clean the grate. If you have something in a tight spot that you cant get with the paddle, just ball up some aluminum foil and get it. Because these grates are porcelain coated cast iron they come clean super fast. Next with the grates out of the way we can scrape the heat diffuser. I like to use a cheap plastic putty knife to clean the diffuser. That way it's strong enough to get any tougher pieces of grease out of the way but also wont scratch the protective coating on the diffuser. Once that is done we remove the diffuser, remove the heat tube and dump any stray ash out of it and sweep and scraped off grease from the bottom of the cooking chamber using a paper towel to move it into our removable grease catch. That's really all there is to this, its a 5 to 10 minute job that will keep your cooker in great shape and your food tasted great. Let me know if you're having any trouble with this process and we can get you sorted, but till next time, y'all take it easy.

Another great video by the Coach! honestly, the more I see of these 980s, the more impressed I am.. the thoughtful design of that heat tube in terms of the vent sizes getting larger the farther away from the firebox. The way the unit is designed to, in theory, shed grease and debris to the sides and down to the catch can.. You can tell Char griller definitely put the R&D into this!

Thanks for this video! In about to cook on mine for the first time since the seasoning process and was curious how to clean it and this was the perfect commentary for that.

Awesome video.. it really is this easy, I hope. Had my grill since August (bday present from the wife) haven't cleaned it, except the grates.. I hope I didn't mess up the grates yet.. made a rookie move and used a normal brush till I got another brand scraper off amazon.. thanks again

I got mine three months ago and used it quite a bit. I figured the cleaning process would be exactly as the video, but dreaded it was going to be much more difficult. Off to the store for a paddle and plastic putty knife 😂

Hey Coach! Great tip on the foil ball and the plastic putty knife. One part I didn’t see you address is cleaning the grease collection channel that leads to the grease cup. What I’ve done is push a balled up paper towel through the channel from each hole in the bottom of the body, but I’m curious if you have found a better way. Thanks!

Lol that’s exactly what I do, leave the collection dish in and push some paper towels from the top to the bottom. The one throng to be careful of is the metal is sharp in those ovals but yup, I came to the same conclusion as you did. Thanks for watching 👍

Great video! I also like bringing it up to 600 or so for about 10 mins to burn off and crisp everything up so it comes off nice and easy! :)

Tom Horsman has a video where he shows you to wrap the heat deflector with aluminum foil. For an easier clean up of the Char Griller 980.

Yup Tom is a great guy and his cookers are always gonna be cleaner than mine hahaha. But as a alternative if you don’t wrap it the deflector wipes clean in no time at all 👍

Do you know where the internal temp prob is? I'm getting some weird temp readings and isn't hitting temp right but can't find the sensor that controls heat to clean it

I’m thinking about spraying some non stick cooking spray on that bottom heat shield right before I fire it up again to make it even easier.

Don't think that will do much... The temps the heat shield reach will scorch the non stick

Curious if you happen to know of a third party to get probes from? I tried 3 different ones from amazon with no luck. Char-Griller doesnt have replacements in stock yet.

Just dropped a video with the only thing I can think of for this situation. I’ve got that question a lot recently, but that doesn’t happen when I use my two cookers

I live in west Texas. The wind blows here a lot. It’s the wind giving the coals enough oxygen to continue burning. Try to block the grill from any wind blowing. This helps mine.

The hardest part (and it's really not that hard) is to determine how much fuel to use for what you are cooking. When I have any coal left, I simply crank the temp all the way up to burn it out. Hasn't failed me yet

I went to Lowe's the other day... They had this thing listed for 469. On the website it said 749. I asked the guy running the department you going to honor that price you got up there. He said yeah cuz I told my manager was wrong and my manager told me to mind my business. He walked me up to the front desk and made the manager honored a number. And then he wrote $280 off in big magic marker on the side of the box. Next day and it says $749.

I hadn't been into my local Lowes for about a month, due to some extended family issues that took me out of town. Went in one evening and noticed the spot where the 980 had been displayed was empty. Inquired of the dept sales person on duty what was up, concerned it may be getting replaced, and was told they had blown them out starting about a month ago. He said he had brought out all of their back-stock at that time and said he'd sold around 20 of them for $151 each, with some customers buying 2 or 3 at one time. I asked if other stores had done the same. He wasn't sure, but according to his price-scanner, his store still had them listed at $151 (even though online it showed as regular price). He said it was a "manager special", in-store only. He said he could not see the actual "in-store" price of any other local stores in their sales district to see if they too were blowing them out, but said that if I went in or called and asked a sales associate to price-check the "in store" price on their scanner / terminal, I could see which stores were still doing the clearance discounting. He checked and said that another local store showed they had 2 in stock, but again couldn't be sure of the actual price. I went to that store and even though the regular price card was up on their floor model, I asked the sales clerk to price check on their scanner and guess what? Also $151 "manager special", which she seemed surprised to see. The floor model had some apparent damage to the bottom of the hopper (forklift?), so they went about looking in their back / warehouse / dock storage area for the 2nd one it showed they had in stock. The lady came back and said they couldn't find it, but said she had spoken to the manager to confirm the sale price and said I could have the floor model for the discounted price. I said I'd continue checking around and get back to her. (Note this was about an hour before closing, so maybe that had something to do with it). I called or went to a half-dozen other stores within an hour of me (greater L.A. area). 3 others said they had also been blowing the 980 out for about a month or two (since Dec, apparently) for $181, but were completely sold-out. Two additional stores had stock on hand, but both managers stated to me that they had decided they didn't need to clear out the model to "make room" for new seasonal stuff because they routinely sold a lot of the 980's with no discounting, so saw no need to take up corporate's offer to allow them to be discounted (vs the first store, my local one, which apparently sold very few of the 980's, hence why they needed to sell more to make more room). The following day, I went back to the second store, which still showed it had two in stock (including the damaged floor model). The day-shift garden & seasonal section salesclerk was a different guy from the lady I spoke to the night before. He was much more helpful, with a much better attitude. I told him I had been in the night before, and described how the other saleslady had "tried" to find the 2nd 980 in the back storage area (dock), but said she couldn't find it. I asked him the favor of trying to look for it again, and he agreed. 15 minutes later, he returned and said that yep, he had found the last one, but it was really buried and it would take some time to dig it out. 20 minutes after that, he brought a BNIB 980 out on a forklift. So 15 minutes to find it, and another 20 to "dig it out". I told the guy I owed him big-time. This guy was a real life-saver. So, for $151 I finally got a NIB one, which I just did the burn-in for two days ago. No idea of they are expecting more of these to come in, or if they are being replaced with an updated model. On a side-note, some of the Lowes were reportedly also blowing out some Webers. I was told the $1049 model was going for as little as $257 NIB at some stores (I believe it was the i-grill version S-335 or E-335 or better). I also tried to call around to stores within about 30 miles of me to see if they had any of those Webers still in-stock on discount. One store in the entire metro LA area I called still had one, but they claimed they also couldn't "find it" in their back dock storage area. They said their system showed it was going for around $450 (not as much of a discount as my local store said they had it at), but again, they claimed they couldn't find it in their warehouse area. It was pretty far to make the drive (across the county) to beg someone to take a deep dive into their storage area, so I figure I'll wait until next years clearance. A few days after I picked up the 980, I mentioned the sale to a manager of a local Ace Hardware, where I was picking up a couple bags of B&B charcoal. He said he had previously worked at Lowes, and while he was aware of the "manager special" discounting, he didn't recall it being that steep of a discount. He wasn't sure if it was just a one-time thing or not for this year, but he added that Lowes is so large, and they offer their managers such leeway to clear stuff out, that corporate likely wasn't worried about clearing them out for a loss. On a side note, I did notice a lot of gaps in the Weber displays at the stores I visited, and saw some of the newer generation of Webers coming in (with the different dials / knobs and "sear zone" graphics on them. None of the "smart" models yet...) So, now we know how all of these "discount grill" operations get much of their stock... Interestingly, I have now noticed many people selling "brand new, in the box" (unopened and unassembled) 980's and Webers in my local Craigslist and Offer Up, which I am certain came from these blow-out sales over the past month or two. The sellers are trying to get something like around 80% of the list price, but no thank you. Not that I now know how much they likely paid for them.... P.S. It had occurred to me to buy one of the 980's at full retail that was in stock at the two local stores whose managers had said they were not discounting that model, then return it to one of the stores that WAS discounting it, then "buy it back" now that they had the one I had just returned "back in stock". One manager agreed that "might work", although the store staff certainly wouldn't appreciate going through the hoops just to "help a guy out".... I'm fairly certain that once the Super Bowl is over, we should immediately see discounting in the stores to clear out old models, as well as in local personal sales ads!

So a few more months into it what I like to do is what I did here, then just take a paper towel and wipe them down while it’s still cool. The porcelain makes it a piece of cake. But yeah if it was really on there you could use a more heavy duty degreaser, just make sure to follow which ever ones instructions for cleaning the degreaser off before putting food back on them

@@Cookoutcoach I read somewhere in the Char-Griller literature or perhaps on their website NOT to use Citrus cleaners....dunno if it has magical properties against the porcelain used.
