This might be a dumb question but how does debris get in your water lines in the first place? That looked like sand in there. I am on city water and we don't get gunk in our water lines like that. Is this house on a well or does this happen to everyone?

I'm a plumber and people call for it all the time. Most of the time they don't know (and you wouldn't either most likely) what the problem is, it's generally a situation of I lost pressure in my entire house. When 1 fixture fails then some basic plumbing knowledge like this is handy, absolutely. But the majority of the time that isn't the case when I go to these jobs, it's a split pipe that has brought dirt in and clogged multiple fixtures so we get called to fix a leak and end up cleaning all the aerators. Don't judge others on their knowledge just because you have some, I don't know a day thing about windows and would never even attempt to Google it because it sounds like a real difficult thing to attempt and if you fuck it up you get water in your house, but according to the guy above who installs them it's very simple and takes 30 mins. Imagine calling someone to fix that. See what I mean? Your knowledge is not my knowledge and Don't pretend everyone can know everything. Most people don't even know what an aerator is, let alone how to fix it or even that it exists TO fix.

As a former plumber and electrician, I can assure you that there's a ratio of how rich someone is and how clueless they're likely to be. I've gotten calls to, and I'm not kidding, turn a water valve on, because the owner (a MD) had no clue how to turn the water on for his bathroom. Poorer families just have the ins-and-outs of electrical and plumbing fixtures all figured out, they almost never call for simple stuff like this. They have common knowledge that, sadly, isn't too common with rich(er) families.

I learn a few things from my dad as a kid. But i observed people doing work and every other machine n tool of how they were designed to be used. But i learnt a lot lot more simply cause he had a bunch of tools & i always had something to open fix break test n play curiously with. That said, no matter how clogged the aerator gets, the water should never ooze out from the sides. It simply means it was installed either loose or without it's rubber gasket. Also i use a pointed pair of pliers n not screw drivers to avoid scratching the expensive finish, that's if don't have a towel and a strong grip. Another tip for regular aerator - use a thin profile spanner on the notch. No adjustable wrenches or pliers please.

I'm suprised you don't have an aerator tool extremely helpful and no chance for damage by sliping with flat heads

If someone needs to do it, you can also just leave it in vinegar for the night and all the calc will be gone :) I had to to do it for the same reason and it was as good as new

I always drop them in a cup of vinegar for a couple hours or overnight. Obviously takes longer but much more convenient since I always have some lying around in a gallon jug

Many times when you purchase a new faucet they come with a tiny plastic tool to screw in the aerator. I highly recommend saving that little piece cause taking the aerator out can be a huge pain in the ass sometimes

Clr is an incredible coffee maker cleaner fyi. And before anyone says "but its poison"....you arent drinking it. You use a very small amount, dilute in a full pot, and then run several pots ful of water through to clear. You dont even know how funky your coffee make is now. Use vinegar if you're afraid of clr. Just go do it now!

The mixer unit in my kitchen had a design that didn’t make it very obvious it had one of those filters, and being over twenty years old I was expecting the old screw on the outside type. Imagine my surprise when my ever decreasing water fixed it’s self explosively as the 90% clogged filter exploded out in pieces. Water pressure is fine now!

Thank you!!! Every video says to use vinegar but that will not cut it for my faucets

I didn't even know the aerator comes off like that. Subscribed for when I'm inevitably clueless on something.

What a blessing to remember being on the porch roof with Grandpa when I was 6-7. I see all these 'tips' and I was introduced to maybe 1 that I did not know. Now I have 500 houses within 1/2 mile east and west and keep convincing myself that no one would call a guy to walk 150 feet, take 2-3 tools out of his belt, have 100% success in 45 minutes, and pay $200-$400. Then I see this. Next will be a squeak in a door hinge. Then a key cylinder that sticks. The the unused garage walk-in side door was installed with prime only, 12 years ago, can you paint it?

I work at McDonald's, and this is almost exactly how we clean the soda fountain nozzles every night. Pretty cool how similar they are (although it seems obvious in hindsight)

Sometimes I'm blown away at people's laziness to immediately call someone for something so simple. Like did they not try a single thing to fix this?
