crosstrainingenduro.com We want to show you how to ride dirt bikes using enduro skills and dirt bike techniques with our huge collection of free training vids. Struggling with hill climbs? Here are the basic hill climbing techniques for enduro bikes and dirt bikes. This enduro skills video uses cross training: trials techniques applied to enduro riding on your dirt bike, as recommended by top and extreme enduro riders like Graham Jarvis, Jonny Walker and Taddy Blasuziak who are all former trials champions.

As mentioned in Body positioning, hill climbs will need you standing on the footpegs with your body to the front of the bike! Keep your throttle and clutch control smooth. Spinning the rear wheel up may look impressive but will not provide maximum traction. Trials riding may not appear to share much with dirt riding - much of the action happens at walking speed - but the balance, precise, traction and clutch skills help with enduro riding, especially for hill climbs. The growing interest in extreme enduro led to an upsurge in trials riding riding internationally, and many dirt riders are now joining trials clubs to improve their overall technique for basic dirt riding and hill climbs.
Maintain momentum, the main thing behind successful hill climbing. A note on extreme hill climbs - if you watch the extreme enduros you will see that eventually some climbs get so steep that even the top riders will deliberately sit down well to the rear of the bike. As Graham Jarvis says "Going fast is the easy bit, it’s going slowly that will help you develop control." The best extreme enduro riders like Jarvis are so smooth when climbing hills you don't realise how difficult the terrain is until you see them flying past the less experienced riders on hill climbs.
It can be inspiring, but also demoralising to see how well these guys ride. We figured if you can't beat them, join them. So past few years, a bunch of us in our 50s thought we would try to learn as much of this shit as possible, before dementia and arthritis slow us down. And along the way we've been pumping out free dodgy enduro training vids for everyone. And being free they come with a money back guarantee if they make you ride worse... and they probably will. So what is cross training? It's just applying trials skills to dirt riding... slowing things down initially we we can be faster, and more importantly, better dirt riders. Slow things down when learning how to ride a dirt bike faster and focus on clutch control, balance and traction. Don't aim for speed straight away or you will have to unlearn bad dirt riding techniques later. A coaching session with Chris Birch was a great start. Arguably the top extreme enduro rider back in 2010 despite coming from New Zealand, Birchy shared many tips that worked their way into the training vids. Around 95% of the top extreme enduro riders are former trials riders. So it's not surprising these guys say the key to learning to ride fast is first slow down and get your fundamental techniques right. The past few years Graham Jarvis has been the king of the extreme enduro world, and we've even started our own religion based on his teachings. We even got to ask his holiness on how to make our bikes do the crazy shit his bike does and learn how to ride a dirt bike properly. Our local trials and endurocross champion Ruben Chadwick also has provided some great tips and video footage along the way. And recently Tim Coleman has wowed everyone with his tricks on a dirt bike and excellent coaching across Australia and overseas too. We will never match these guys, but we have surprised ourselves at the new tricks we old dogs can learn. Along the way there have been plenty of stacks and offs as we ride well beyond our very limited abilities. Visit our Cross Training Techniques page for dozens of poor quality vids with misleading or totally inaccurate information about bike setup, cross training skills, riding tips, hard enduro techniques and how to ride a dirt bike. Cross training applies trials techniques to dirt bike skills - the balance, traction and throttle/clutch control will change the way you ride your enduro bike. The rise of extreme enduro has seen a new breed of riders, pushing the boundaries of what is possible on a dirt bike. .

BODY POSITION FOR STEEP HILL CLIMBS? Rough rule of thumb? As it gets steeper you are still in the default position but just squat more to lower the centre of gravity. Or if sitting on the seat, slide forward. Leaning over the bars is only for when it's very steep and must be done to avoid a backflip. I base this on training with Chris Birch we did years ago. Other enduro trainers may disagree of course... One thing I've noticed about filming hill climbs with my GoPro is that you don't get a good sense of how steep the hill is
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
+needs2know1 we've found the only way to give some indication is stop halfway up slightly off the track and film someone coming up, the sideview helps show the steepness. even then, the wide angle flattens it a bit and you need to tilt the camera slightly in towards the hill to correct for this.

It's almost impossible to get a good sense of how steep a hill is on film.. just look at downhill alpine skiing on TV, many times or looks flat when it's 45°

Used to love hillclimbs... basically because I was the guy to beat. Fast forward 45 years, 44 of which not riding and I find myself a shadow of what I was. I'll never be what I was but want to be the best I can be right now. This brought back a lot of pleasant memories.

I’m a 61 year old man that had over 30 years away from dirt bikes. Got myself a KTM 300 a couple of years ago, got my “mo jo” back reasonable quick and was matching 500’s in ares but had a lot of bad habits that were holding me back These Vids are awesome for relearning techniques. I’ve been doing some riding with a couple of former pointy end Mr Moto X competitors so I’ve been practicing a fair bit in private so I can get past having training wheels .. . My main advantage though is their knees, backs and ankles are shot 😄👍😂 , plus they have some serious dad bods too😀🤣.. long live Gumbies..😀😁👍

Easier said than done, practice every weekend and you will master MX. The ones that are riding better than most of us, are the ones with their own private MX tracks in their backyard. This video makes a lot of sense, if you apply it correctly without fearing the inevitable crashes.

BrodekDHE we had a thread on dirt bike world discussing hill climbs before posting the vid. i agreed with one guy who said it can be a mind game and confidence is important. i'm a strong believer is attempting climbs you have a good chance of making and slowly work your way up... no point trashing your confidence cartwheeling back down some monster hill. :-D

Yeah, when you start cartwheeling, your gonna have a bad day. :) I have found that if I can't see the hill in the woods, and I'm forced to tackle it, like following someone who doesn't give a shit lol, I do end up ok on top. Most of the time. But those big open hills, espically the 20' ish 45 degree+ hills, in the open, meh... I really kick myself from getting away from the sport, It's all i did when i was a kid. But being 40+ getting back into it, money and health are always a concern.

Rocky Taylor hard to say... ruts are definitely hard to ride in. you can see in our ruts video we aren't very good at it either. in the extreme videos, even the top riders sit at the rear of the bike and just paddle their way up nasty ruts when they are too tough to stay balanced standing on the pegs. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q_j0bhr71Ko.html

What about downshifting? Like if you hit it fast in second and slipping the clutch isn't enough? Every time I have to downshift I slow way down and just spin the wheel, and it screws me over big time. Advice?
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
+Joe Mamma just do it fast enough... some guys just carefully balance the revs and don't even use the clutch. if you back off the throttle just enough to take the load of the engine you can change down and get back on the gas straight away.

Could the DR 650 have an advantage on hill climbing over dirt bikes, thanks not only to low end tourqe, but because it is heavier which gives it better traction?

I would like to know how to hill climb with a start point with no momentum close to the hill.. my doubt is on the body position and gearing, is most of cases second gear best? Because you rev and dont have a bike wheelie/spin kk Thanks from Brazil

@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
+HAWKONER depends on the situation hawkoner, but i think the big one would be making sure you have enough momentum to not need that last bit of throttle at the top. we have done a vid too on how to properly drop the bike on steep climbs when you aren't going to to make it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-19eoxSJz6nE.html

If your leaning back on a hill and you're pulling on your bars, how do you keep from the throttle slipping wide open??
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 3 года назад
Normally you don't lean back on a hill climb though, Hayden. You just squat lower to get the centre of gravity lower. Not sure if we put it into this vid, but it's in our body positioning vid.
@haydenquakenbush8626
@haydenquakenbush8626 3 года назад
@@crosstrainingenduro so then do you have to keep your center of gravity perpendicular to gravity? Like, you just let the bike tilt back but you stay in the same position as when you were on flat ground? It's hard to describe what I'm thinking lol.

the key points list in the beginning does not cover throttle and clutch control. is this a sub point or what. by the way i am trying to translate your videos and be some help to my fellow turkish offroaders, if it is ok with you...

hobidolap i think throttle and clutch control needs to be in every key points list! :-) it is great if you re-write translations of the text in turkish. but some youtubers were uploading my videos to their channel, then using youtube advertising to make money. :-( i had to report those copyright violations to youtube. i am sure you won't do that though!

Had a massive crash early on in my learning to ride off road. Came off the back of the bike flat on my back slapping my head hard on the ground. The bike was badly damaged, bent bars and exhaust. Ruined my confidence. I picked up the bike and had another go and got higher up but lost traction and had a repeat of the first crash. Each time I tried to pick up the bike it slid down the hill grinding away bits of the bike. Nightmare !

what size engine do you need for hill climbing? 125cc / 250cc /450cc ??
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 2 года назад
It's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string, Ivan... so many factors to consider. However the biggest one is just developing your skills. This will always be way more important than the size or type of bike or the knobbies you are using.
@ivanmogollon6553
@ivanmogollon6553 2 года назад
@@crosstrainingenduro thank you, but your getting too technical. Some one else advise a 250cc minimum. My budget is 5k and that puts me right on the 250cc where as the 450cc cost around 9k and i was not sure if it was worth the higher cost.

This has proven time and again to be one of my biggest problems as we have this type of tight switchback all over our trails. Even though my clutch and throttle control is much better than this guy, I still end up feeling like my bike is going to tip over once I get it partially around the corner. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-77FY66SCFGk.html Any advice?
