Hi Doug, A few years ago, I was walking the path and stairs around Mt. Rushmore. I did ok till we were almost to the top. I looked up and it was BIG STONE STEPS. The railing was on the left side. The arm and hand that don't work. I almost turned around to go back the way we came up. Then it came to me go up SIDE WAYS. That is how I did it. I had my friend hold my cane. It was not easy but I did it.

The girl on your second video is not stepping the way you have just suggested) And some people, professionals, advise not to lean forward goin up as in that case it involves wrong mussels and damages them

Hello Anthony, a human on stairs has to lean forward going up. It is more or less how we are built. To use your quadracep muscle to rise up steps, you have to lean over each leg to move upwards.

Leaning forward going up is sensible as it is safer. If you are going to fall on stairs, fall upwards! If going down is very unsafe (as it was for me one icy day) you can always sit down and ease down one step at a time.

Hi Doug my problem with walking stairs is my right leg is weak so I end up pulling myself up while holding onto the rail I'm doing strength exercises

My right leg is paralysed (polio) so I know what you mean. I’m having a bit of trouble with my left leg nowadays so I often go up by putting my left hand on 2 steps above and holding the banister spindles in my right hand so I am half crawling.

If your right leg is weak, you can try to go down with the right leg first, taking only one step at a time (as shown in this video) and when you go up, use the left leg first. This will help take advantage of your stronger leg. Sideways is somewhat easier, in that you can grip with both hands, but makes you lift your hips higher and takes a little more leg strength.

Respected Sir , My age is 57 , I am having a problem of knee pain, while going upstairs or after completion of upstairs. am I having artrists ?. . Please reply.

It's hard to know for sure, but most likely. Arthritis would give you pain when you stand up or pain when you have to go up a lot of steps.
