Here I demonstrate how to make a spoon by whittling and using coal burning techniques.
It's shot on location at night with some difficulties with focus but I think there's enough here to give a good idea how to demonstrate the use of this technique.
The video was shot during an eight day solo trip in Algonquin Provinical Park on the island site on Lac Lavielle.

Thanks Troy! I've been veiwing your videos for a couple years now and absolutely love all your hard work! Nice to share your bushcrafting skills. I love Algonquin too, first visit with my son and wife 3 years ago this past fall. I will share this as a craft to do with my son next time were in the park. Thanks again! Kevin

Very interesting, informative, and unique video. A whole better than watching the burn times for alcohol pop can stoves that most of the camping videos seems to post. A good project for the night time sitting around the camp fire. I'm going to try it the next time out. Thanks

great vid! i thought i kept hearing a piano version of the super mario bros. 2 main world theme while you were using the coals to burn the cavity of the spoon. i had to double take a few times.

I am kind of an armchair bushcrafter that wants to learn how to carve spoons and Kukas. I had heard of burning the bowel but never saw it done. Surprised me how fast it was done. Thanks for the video and info,

SilverFox in his spoon video leaves a handle on the other side of the "bowl" part so you have a place to hold the work piece until you have the handle crafted the way you like, then he just trims off the extra handle. just a thought!

I've done this on a canoe trip when my plastic spoon broke. Took a little longer than yours, maybe it was harder wood. What blade you using there? Cheers

do you use these for cooking at home? I was thinking of making one for my kitchen. What wood do you recommend?

Awesome! Totally loved it! Is there something that makes it safe to use, coating it with an oil? Or is it good to go as is?

You can just leave it but it'll stain and absorb your food more. It's best to give it some kind of food safe finish,, varnishes and oils for cutting boards work well.

@nickfish03 The knife I used in this video was the Bark River Bravo-1, and yes, it did go rather quickly since it was done with a soft wood - pine. Due to some rusting problems with the carbon steel, I'll be trying out the Fallkniven F1 next season. Bark River makes great knives but it seems I just can't beat the rain lately and I don't want to worry about always keeping my knife dry, especially with canoe camping.

Can you whittle during daylight or does it affect the quality of the finished spoon?

Nice job! But, how the fuck are you suppose to eat cereal with that spoon?

surely it would be easier to carve your spoon blank by making 2 stop cuts on either side and batoning that way you don't need to do that dodgy rock thing.
