Have fun and make some custom keyboard cables to match your setup! This is a proper guide to make a coiled mechanical keyboard USB C cable which will not unravel if you have all the right parts. The result depends on a lot of factors and you are not likely to get it perfect the first time.

@@JoeGaz Is it worth it to reheat after reverse coiling? What happens if you don't
@intensedabberoniJG
@intensedabberoniJG Год назад
@@MrMeganatty i think this method works because he heats it up slowly for pretty short amount of time, so when he reverses the coil theres a good amount of tension pulling it back together for a tighter coil. heating it a second time fully sets the techflex, this time with the existing tension from the reverse coil pulling it back together and making the finished coil as snappy as it can be. a lot of people will fully set the techflex and reverse it (which i think is a valid way to get a springy cable?) but they'll also reheat it and ruin the techflex. as far as i know, this method works because the techflex does not set before the reverse coil, but there are a variety of ways to coil the cable without a second heating

Hi, dumb question, what does the techflex do exactly, is it just for aesthetics? Thanks for the great video.
@JoeGaz
@JoeGaz 2 года назад
Most of the time depending on the cable it helps maintain the coil shape due to how techflex is made. It's essentially a thermoplastic that can mold with heat. Otherwise yes it is aesthetic as well and stylish. Not to mention the sleeving can act as a protector against cuts. So it is much more durable.

The second heating is to make the coil nice and straight. It should not lose springiness and if it does do it for a little less. The cable you must be using is likely not the best for coiling. Don't expect the same results as me. You need to do your own testing. :)

Isn't the point of reversing a cable to have the molecular bonds straining against their natural coil direction? If you reverse it, THEN re-bake it, or reheat it, surely you are in the same position as you were _before_ you reversed it?
@JoeGaz
@JoeGaz 2 года назад
The reheating for less time after the reverse coil allows it to form more nicely when it comes off the rod. If you just reheat it and then reverse it the coils come out wonky depending on the materials used. My approach gives more people a chance to make a great coiled cables that look great with most materials and with incredible results. You want a nice coil but also good snap so it returns nicely to its original shape.

The extra baking helps to align the coil when you reverse it and it depends on the type of cable if it affects the snap.
