How to Cold Smoke Fish Primitive Preservation

A step by step guide to cold smoke preservation using primitive means.
WARNING! This is a primitive method and is an inherently risky means of food preservation. Modern techniques and preservatives should be used if possible, this demonstrated method poses multiple dangers and should be seen as more of a post apocalyptic option.
Cold Smoking is an imprecise method of food preservation which aims at inhibiting microbial growth through temperature, humidity, and salinity manipulation. Complete inhibition of bacterial growth cannot be achieved without extreme heat, cold, and/or modern preservation methods. Botulism and numerous other harmful bacteria can remain within the meats that are cold smoked and thus pose an ever present risk.

I discovered your channel today, your videos reminded me of all the survival/primitive living classes, practice, and books I've read. I taught a small survival skills school in Boulder CO for years, one thing led to another and that became a part of my past. It's always felt off in a way and I haven't practiced since then. You reminded me of what's been missing in my life the last 6 years, I owe you one.

I do bushcraft for the fun of it and to get away from society for a bit... more like a sport or a hobby than for preparation. If you just go outside for a couple hours a day a few days a week and do this stuff for fun it adds up and you would still have the skills in any kind of event, however unlikely it may be.
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 6 лет назад
Such an event is not unlikely. In fact, a true nationwide disaster than last for many years is inevitable. It's just a matter of when. The odds are rated at one hundred percent. All we can hope for is that it doesn't happen in our lifetime. But it can happen any day. Dirt times is what will save you, but it has to be the real thing where you actually use those skills to shelter and feed yourself. Shelter and feed yourself WELL. Taking food and everything else you need to survive into the wild isn't going to help much.

@muehahahaha
@muehahahaha 7 лет назад
where do you guys live? and do you know the nature there? If iam not catching pike in the spring/summer iam catching trout in the streams in the winter, or big perch in fall/winter, the fish moves about and will be caught most effectively seasonally. Many leafy greens, which we now adays sees as weeds, are edible and stay green throughout winter -i live in Southern Scandinavia - it gets cold. Even in arctic conditions there should be an available food supply year round - bear, birds, fish, seals and other sea mammals. And talking about arctic conditions, food preservation isnt as big an issue as in the tropics Many roots and seeds should also still be available during winter.

I personally use pine to smoke and can fish all the time, I think it gives the best flavor. Where I live we don’t have mesquite readily available. However we do have mountain mahogany which is really good when I can get it. Also the main thing in smoking is to get rid of moisture that is what gives mold the opportunity to grow and spoil food. But if you have salt that also helps a lot. Great video!!! Love the oven. God bless!!

that structure is how a friend and I use to do it all the time but the only thing we did different was built a halfe way shield around three quarters with a quarter opening and a closed top about 2 feet over to top of the tripod and my friend had a lot of cherry trees in his lot so he said that the fish always had a fruity smell but overall still tasted like fish lol. I never ate the fish I always wanted to stirfry and cold smoke the fruits and veggies, above all you did an awsome and excellent job with this video Bob, really a very good job my friend.

I am a paraplegic but have a 11 year old son. I am pretty healthy but have to stay that way and survive to finish raising my so if shtf. I am researching and watching as many survival viseos as possible. With today's political climate in America, everyone should be doing like I am. And stock up on everything you possibly can to survive. And do not put all your eggs in one basket. Everyone needs to not forget about farming. Get as many (reproducing if possible) seeds, fertilizer, sprays, and starting soil too. Beans have plenty of protein and turnips can survive very harsh winters and can be grown in all seasons. The German army survived off of turnips in the last year of the war. We all need to learn from each other and wait for the dust to settle from the first year. Those that do not prepare will be dead by then and the rest of us "could" survive and thrive in small groups. Without groups or small communities it will nearly impossible for us to survive long term. After all, we are merely humans.
