The dog is smart! The fish were stuffed with onions. Onions, garlic, ramps, etc can/will make a dog sick. It destroys their red blood cells. There were only small amounts in the fish and it was the meat that he was trying to feed the dog. However the toxins are cumulative, so it might only take a small amount. I just went through this with my chocolate lab. She loves to play ball. being very unlike her while I wasn’t home, she grabbed an onion off the counter and played ball with it. Four days later I thought she was going to die.

@jimroberts2647
@jimroberts2647 4 года назад
Extremely different from what I have here in northeast Oklahoma and it's only a 4 hour drive to Texas from here, maybe less. But within Texas: in the northeast is more heavily wooded and hilly with lots of streams and small bodies of water in the western central area you are getting into semi-arid, the trees are more like bushes and few sources of water except shortly after rain Those are the only two areas of Texas I can speak intelligently about as I haven't spent much time in any other areas. Having said that, Oklahoma is somewhat the same. As you move from east to west, the terrain changes as does the climate (somewhat) along the same lines. Been wondering for some time about the edible things I know about in northeast Oklahoma, as in how wide spread is/are lamb's quarter? Sand plum trees? Blackberries? Mulberries? Polk? Cattails? Did learn a couple of things from the video, though. Briar shoots are edible. Making string/line/twine from yucca leaves. I knew about prickly pear 'apples' but had never heard when is best to harvest them. Thanks for a great video!

@franksmedley8619

Hello Bob. I am an 'older' man, and I've served in the USMC. While in the Corps, I used one of those cheap 'survival' knives to prove a point to my fellow Marines. Most of whom had never set foot out of a large city. Whereas I had grown up tramping the woods and streams in rural Michigan with my Father and Brother. My dad was, as am I, of the same mind as you. 'Be Prepared'. Yes, you may never need what you pack into the woods, but if you do need it... you'll need it badly. So, the extra weight and encumbrance is a very minor thing as opposed to needing something, and realizing you left it behind, far away. Back to the cheap knife. It had fish hooks, line, compass, a ring saw, sewing needle, some thread, and a couple of small lead weights. Using my K-Bar, I had a pole in practically no time. A bit of dry wood worked as a bobber, and worms are everywhere. In three or four of hours, I had myself almost a dozen fish. All about hand sized. Mostly bluegills and sunfish. But to me, the main catch was a nice Carp, about 2 1/2 feet long. I did the same as you did with the small panfish, skewered over a low fire. But the Carp, I cleaned out and made very sure to get the 'mud vein' as well. Carp are NOT native to America but were introduced by European sports fishermen and they spread everywhere. The mud vein on a Carp is its natural defense against being eaten. I gutted the carp and laid him out, in his scales, over a woven mat of thin sticks over a bed of coals. I used water to 'baste' the fish as it cooked, to keep it moist. I could have just as easily wrapped it in a cocoon of grass and 'steamed' it in its skin and scales. I also roasted a few dozen nuts after piercing their shells, to dry the nut inside, inside its husk. Hardest part was making the fire. Which, since I was making a point, I refused to use matches or a lighter, both of which I did have, as well as a fire starter kit. Instead, I made a point of finding some flint and using the back of my K-bar to get the sparks needed to ignite my tinder. The guys were amazed that one could catch fish so easily, and cook them over an open fire. All sampled everything, including the wild onion and diced Morell mushrooms I had stuffed the smaller fish with. Several balked at eating the carp, but when they saw me munching away and obviously enjoying it, they broke down and tried some. Carp, either steamed or, grilled over a bed of coals, is a very tender and tasty meal. the flesh is white, light, and has a delicate flavor. Keeping it moist is key to not having tough meat to chew. In any case, I proved that they could survive easily in a forest full of food if they knew what to look for, how to prepare it, how to cook it, and... were prepared enough. The fact that I won 20 bucks off of each and every one of them is not really relevant. I proved that even if the commissary truck didn't arrive, no one would starve if one was prepared. Knowledge of how to 'survive' is something that should be kept alive and passed on to every generation. One can never know what the future holds ( air burst EMP blast that 'kills' our technological society? ), and being prepared can keep you alive to live another day, to find even better ways to survive down the road. A good knife, a small hatchet, and enough gear to fill a backpack can see one living primitively, but not starving long enough to find better tools or help. Speaking Frank-ly

Oh, I should mention WHY I grilled the carp the way I did. Laying it out in it's skin and scales and basting it to keep it moist ( if not doing a survival thing, one can do this easily with a bbq grill and a bit of melted butter with seasonings added ). Grilling the fish this way causes the bones to curl up out of the flesh, making them dead easy to pluck away. Leaving only the nicely moist meat laying on a 'plate' of its skin and scales. Which you will find, if you try this, is simple to just slide off and onto a plate. Carp is a 'boney' fish, and most won't eat it because they either do not clean the mud vein, or hate the bones. This method deals with both issues and leaves only the light, flakey flesh that can be easily slid from the skin and scales. Just a thought, Frank-ly speaking.

Mr. Hansler, I’m aware that I am one of many folks writing comments on your videos. I just want you to know this is the first time time I’ve ever commented on RU-vid (or any other social media place). I work in Austin in the tech industry. I own 34 acres 40 miles east of Austin and have lots of rattlesnakes. I was raised on a ranch of 1300 acres in north Texas that was started by my great grandfather. I’ve been taught a lot about country living by my father and his father. I’m 32, I’ve cowboy’d, I’ve welded for oil energy production, and I spent five years in college before I wound up in the video game industry. Never, have I learned more about Texas, living in the country, and respect for our nature than since I’ve been following you on RU-vid. I’m saying thanks and I’m hoping your health is well. Thanks again, you’re the real thing if I’ve ever seen it my friend

Humans used to pass survival information to each other, but current generations are losing their roots. I hope humans never completely lose touch with where they came from. I say that as someone who loves big city living. Thanks for sharing this with people.

I've hiked and backpacked solo for decades and NEVER ONCE thought about wrapping some fishing line around my walking stick! Thanks for the tip. Here's one for folks who've never made cordage (string, line, rope, etc): practice the technique with unwaxed dental floss. It's cheap, easily available and works really well. You'll astound yourself, and you'll be learning an ancient survival skill that most of the people in the world no longer know. Great video!

"Better than Okra!" That's a bold ass statement right there, especially in Texas, as we tend to love our okra. That must be some good Tuna. I've never had it green before. I've also never seen fish processed that way. Have to try that sometime. Great video, I've watched it twice, once with my wife.

Simply amazing! I do not usually praise or give compliments to ANY 'survivalist' types here on youtube, but YOU,Sir, deserve it. You are perhaps the best 'improvised/survival-type' fisher anywhere! The amount of fish you were able to catch with just a improvised pole/hook/line combination is just impressive as hell! Even fishing with regular equipment, I doubt if anyone would be able to better you. I am very impressed by your skills. Congratulations, and keep up the great work. Videos like this are some of my favorite.

Beautiful heeler you've got. It's a terrific breed, I've got my third one now. They're some of the smartest and most loyal dog breeds out there, and they're especially good for being sole companions to a single person and they're terrific outdoors, although I've found with time and training they make a great family dog too. They're just so damn intelligent, fun, and they're up for anything if they're bonded to you.

In '85 my grampa took me fishing for the first time that I recall. We got up before dawn, dug worms, walked through a little wood maybe a mile to a 'friends' pond, he showed me how to choose a stick, he had line and some hooks, he showed me how to make a simple pole... I even found a red and white bobber floating in the reeds which he helped me draw out and attach to my rig. One of my only memories of him but dang if it's not a good one! Thxs for the video, it reminded me of him.
