Worked for a guy that owned a bull service. Started when i was about 12 or so. Would take a plane out to the ranch to collect, eventually he trained me to do the lab part also, extending, freezing and then going back later and warming a sampling of straws to check viability. Also eventually learned to ai cows and do ultrasounds. Should have stuck with it. Used to work at several hog farms collecting boars and processing their semen. Did they ever figure out a way to freeze boar semen or is it still only viable for 7 or so days if extended properly?
There are a lot of equestrians in the USA that pay really good money to have this done for them on their geldings. I have more time than money so I'm a do it myself kind of gal.
Hands do not absorb germs, that's why we have skin. Germs only become a problem when they get into our mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, nose, lungs, throat, stomach, intestines) or bloodstream. Well washed hands are just as clean as sanitized gloves, the only differences are: gloves can be readily changed, hands must be regularly washed, hands only means you're touching gross stuff.
Hey Enoch, thanks for this informative video. I’d never seen how semens are collected in bulls before. We have a farm in Nigeria with about 50 Sokoto Gudalis also knows as Bokolo. They are short horned, very similar to Brahmans. What are the possibilities of experimenting with semens from your bulls in our flock? How do you safely transport semens from a place like Australia or USA to Nigeria? I’d like to experiment with semens from Angus, Brahmans and some special breeds from Australia.
