Collecting specimens is one of the most rewarding ways that you can enjoy your succulents. Purchasing cuttings is a smart and clever way to collect awesome varieties of succulents, because it is very economical and is a highly attainable way to start a growing collection. Purchasing rooted ones is one great way to collect specimens, too.
It is always exciting to open a box of assorted succulents. Opening a box of succulent is like opening a box of assorted chocolates! Each one is exciting!

Hey, folks, instead of perlite, I suggest that you use marble chips or gravel as top dressing. Perlite is too light. If you will put your arrangement indoors with no wind or breeze, perlite is okay. This is also okay if you are doing bottom watering, 'cause if you are watering from top, they will all float away. But if there’s wind blowing around it, like near an open window, perlite will not be a good idea at all. It’s too light. It easily gets blown by the wind. 😊 I just didn't have marble chips at the time I made this. 😅

Hi Sheila, thank you so much for this video. :) They are so helpful! Is there a part 2 to this video? I want to know what happens after the first two weeks, when you don’t water your cuttings. How often do you water them after that? And when do you start treating cuttings that have rooted like fully grown succulents and switch from misting to soaking them? Lastly, I have some cuttings that aren’t putting out roots, and the leaves are drying up slowly one by one. What happens if this keeps happening past the two week mark-can I start watering them then? Sorry I have so many questions! I’ve been taking care of succulents for 6 months now, but am new to cuttings! Thank you 💗
@SucculentFame
@SucculentFame 5 лет назад
Hi Kristin, your questions are all fine. No need to apologize at all. 😃I dont mist my cuttings. I would just water them straight up around the 3rd week. Drying leaves are normal for newly potted cuttings, as long as not all leaves are drying or rotting. 😃 After that initial watering, I would water when the roots are already really dry. There is no pattern to watering ‘cause it depends on every climate and weather. Like here, in the winter, I would only water once or twice in roughly 3 months. 😃 In the summer, I would water as often as once a week to once every two weeks depending on the size of the pot. So, after the initial watering, they are watered pretty much like a grown succulent. 😃 I hope I was able to answer all of your questions. Feel free to ask more questions. I’m more than happy to help. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. ❤️🙏🌈

It is very beautiful. After watering the basket pot , how do you keep the white basket clean and dry to put it back on the table ? After the time goes by , will the basket rot since it seems made of the material not resistant to the damp? I wanna try this too but these are my doubts . Love a lot your videos!!!

Hi Xiaole, the basket is plastic. After almost a year or two years, the succulents have already grown like a bad hair day, so I had to replant them. The basket is till good. I am in a place where the temperature is going to be high and we do not get soil mix here. Can we get soil mix on line and how many days should we leave the cutting for it to become callosed and after how many days should we water
@kenlyn3794
@kenlyn3794 5 лет назад
You can order the cactus mix online or make your own, there are videos on that. Leave them for about a 5-7 days, For thicker plants 5 days per inch.
@SucculentFame
@SucculentFame 5 лет назад
Hi, Dr. Soni, Kenlyn is right. There are a lot of options online for soil mixes. If your are just starting, I also suggest that you allow them to callous over for 4 to 7 days if you are likely to water within a few days after planting. I no longer wait for my cuttings to callous over, but I postpose watering for after 2 to 3 weeks depending on the season. This is a very good question. Thank you for asking it. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

Do I add perlite in the soil mix or marble pieces. My leaves have started growing small babies. When do I shift them in separate pots and when to water them once they are shifted
@SucculentFame
@SucculentFame 5 лет назад
Please add in perlite to the soil to enhance drainage. My apologies that I used perlite as top dressing in this video. In the comment, I had to mention that marble chips are to be used as top dressing. So, marble chips are for top dressing and perlite is to be used as a component to the soil mix to enhance drainage. Most commercial cactus soil mix already has perlite, but as you become experienced with growing succulents, you’ll find that some would require more customized mix. This is when you would really have to get creative with increasing (and sometimes, decreasing drainage). As for the babies, the bigger they are, the higher is their chance of surviving repotting or transplanting. Thank you so much for asking your question. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈 Blessings to you! 🙏

Hi Aseesa! For cuttings, I would recommend 2 sources other than Amazon. The Succulent Source is one and they have their own website. The other is Carmel Succulents on Etsy. What do you call the white stuff your putting?
@SucculentFame
@SucculentFame 5 лет назад
Hi! For top dressing, I suggest Marble Chips or Volcanic Rock or Tiny Pebbles. Dont use what I used in the video, but I used Perlites. They are too light. If you are going to put your arrangement by an open window or outside, they get blown by the wind. They float in water, too, so when you water they will float around, unless you’re doing bottom watering. That’s why I’m suggesting the heavier materials that I mentioned earlier. Thank you so much for asking this question. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

Hi Sheila, I received a bunch of cuttings about 2 weeks ago. I waited a few days before potting but when I put them into soil I put them in a pot together (6 days ago). I have not watered them and I have put them in the window every day for some sunlight. They look fine but now but should I move them into individual pots to root instead? Will it hurt them to move them now?
@SucculentFame
@SucculentFame 6 лет назад
Hi Cory, they would do well whether they are in individual pots or in a group. I would not suggest that you move them again since by now, they are already starting to settle in the pot. Moving them would mean pushing out watering further, because newly potted succulents are not supposed to be watered immediately. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions. Hi Rita, sorry for the late response! you can plant cuttings or clippings that do no have roots. Plant them directly onto cactus soil. Dont water them at all and no watering for about a week after planting. Sometimes, I would even extend it to 2 weeks. It is normal for some of the leaves at the base to be drying up. How long has it been since you received them?

@SucculentFame
@SucculentFame 6 лет назад
😆 LOL yes, now I know better...I actually replaced those perlites with marble chips now...I didnt have time to buy marble chips and I had to shoot on the day that I was not working, so I used perlite. I will have to comment on this video to tell people to use marble chips or gravel because perlite is just way too light. 😊 thanks for the comment. 😊
@SucculentFame
@SucculentFame 6 лет назад
Perlites are great for letting air circulate, because of their porous and spongy texture, so they are a great component of cactus soil. But when I used it as topping or top dressing for my arrangement, i found out that they are too light, so they easily get blown by the wind. 😄🤣The wind here where I live can be really strong. And since I place those arrangements by the window, I would see that the perlites are getting blown out of place and I would find them on the floor, instead of in the container. 😂🤣 so now, as top dressing, i always use marble chips instead and they stay in place really well. 😁

Hi Aby, yes, they do grow out of shape in the arrangement. 🤣😆 They really get their way. You’ll find that some are such divas that they would stick themselves out so nicely and attracting all the attention. Succulent Fame she’s got a little resemblance of you ... I found your video and subscribed. Love all the explanations... I’m a beginner for succulents 😃

Hi Stella, I saw her. That's Jennie Lok! She's Dan Lok's wife! I love Dan Lok! Yeah, I do see why you said I look like her. My son actually has a resemblance to Dan Lok. He is not in the video, 'cause he is in the Philippines. He has a family now. My apologies for the very late response. 😅 I wish I would always get notifications for responses. I need to actually filter on my computer to find the responses. I only get notification for fresh comments. I don't know why. Thank you so much again for the comments. I really appreciate it. Wishing you more blessings today and always. ❤🙏🌈

I agree, I like your video but would rather just listen to you and not have any music in the background.

John-Robert Lapuz that’s so true! I dont water them very often. For succulents, like right now, since it’s almost winter, I have only watered them once within the past 4 weeks. 😁 i’m just about to create a video on how to water them, but the one that I’m posting next is a very fun video on propagation! 😆

Hi! My apologies is you feel that way. I’m not trying to be classy or anything like that, so I guess it’s okay.😅 I’m just genuinely expressing who I am in my work. Thank you for the feedback, just the same.
