Many people have asked us why their dog's coat is tangled or matted when they do brush them regularly. Therefore, we've decided to make a video demonstrating how to safely work out the tangles and matted hair in the coat. Special thanks to Lucy and Linus' mommy for giving us permission to use Lucy for this video (Linus is the one in the background making all the extra noise.)

I've seen a lot of tips and so not sure what is the right way! Also I feel like I am removing way more hair then I need to. But she's super matted from her harness and scratching behind her ears. I've been at this off and on all day! Again taking it slow!
@ihateallyall
@ihateallyall 2 года назад
@@kimberlyj7441 if they’re big and getting close to the skin best thing is to just shave them. keep her harness time limited, don’t leave it on around the house only when out. keep the hair underneath her ears short so it doesn’t continue to matt, brush and comb her coat 2x daily, never bathe her knotted or matted as they will get much worse.

Thank you for watching and the encouraging comment, John! Good luck with the brushing, and remember that it's not about how fast you can do it so just take your time, enjoy yourself, and remain in the moment. I like to focus on my breathing, making sure it is slow and deep and that I am breathing through my belly rather than my chest. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your dog will be.

Just rescued a Poodle family a couple months ago (mom, dad & 3 little 3 wk. old puppy boys- mill dogs, deceased owner) & have never dealt with this breed before. Parents were filthy & matted beyond belief, so I took them to a prof groomer. They came back bleeding cuts shaved into faces & ears! Not doing that again & I love their sweet people-oriented personalities, so I thank you for this video & your obvious love & concern for the dog's comfort & emotional state. I want to learn to groom them myself & this was very encouraging. The others I've watched on toob treated the dogs like stuffed animals. :(

V F Osbourn I know what you mean. When I first started grooming and watching videos on grooming, I felt the same way you did. But after working with so many dogs for so many years I understand how someone can get desensitized to how they handle the dogs. I'm not saying that it's right or that it is excusable behavior, only that I now understand how it could happen. It's easy to let the pressures of time and the demands of others overwhelm us and stress us out. We must constantly remind ourselves to breathe and remain calm. Self control is an art, and only through mastering the control of self can we produce beautiful art work. Thank you so much for the high compliment, and I really appreciate you watching!

That was refreshing to watch, instead of just hearing " its matted and I'm not dealing with it, I'm shaving it down" no matter what type of dog it is including double coated. The last thing you used I have one but mine is called a Fur Genie - got it off amazon, It came with 3 different sizes of "combs" I use it on my Pit Bull every day he loves that thing! he also sheds non stop. But when I got it it was mainly for one of my cats who's a medium hair cat and I dislike the slicker brushes even on dogs. And I was doggy sitting my sister in laws Golden Retriever a lot and she only used a slicker brush on her :( She was gone for a week, and came back to " A whole new dog" nicely brushed out with my Fur Genie, and a comb (A human comb it's all I had lol) had a bath and was looking adorable :)

I said about the same thing! I don't even know why I watch her videos It aggravates me to no end! I am not a groomer never claimed to be but in my life time I've owned many different breeds of dogs , some pure bred, some mixed mutts or as I called them "My Heinz 57's" I have groomed every single one on my own even as young as 9 years old, I've never shaved a dog. I brush, I comb, I de matt, I use scissors and cut what I need to, and to trim, my dogs enjoyed every minute of it. Only dog I ever owned that got any shaving, Was our mini Schnauzer and my dad did it, gave him the hair cut that is standard of the breed. my heart rate goes out of this world when I watch her video's it's pathetic how she not only treats the dogs, but half the pet parents, and her boyfriend! She treats him like he's a dog as well! and I want to cry every time I see her shave a double coated dog, the poor dog is now ruined for life , it'll not be able to properly regulate it's body heat, it'll over heat in the summer. I'm curious though as to how many dogs have died after being in her care, and she doesn't claim it's her fault. I'm sure she'd blame it on " Old age" " Health issues" or something else, but of course not her fault, but she comes off as a narcissistic person so I wouldn't expect any less out of her.

Thankyou for sharing your knowledge on how to care for our beautiful animals before problems set in and our loved animals are put at risk of excess pain and infection. We clean our bodies, ears skin and comb our hair daily often a few times a day - we need to learn how often it is necessary to do the same with our animals. I love how you have calming music for both yourself and the dogs. I live near the ocean and we are often walking and playing on the sand and salt water and also the creeks and dams where my 10 year old Smithfield cross Schnauser rescue boy has fun and I had to learn how to clean him after and how often.. he has floppy ears and is prone to ear infections, he has a long shaggy single layer coat that I find easier to manage by keeping it shorter. I also manage to groom him myself as he has the ‘rough and rugged look so if I make a mistake - which is very easy to do - it doesn’t matter too much. I bought a good quality Wahl Clipper kit etc and learned how hard it is to groom a dog, even the hairdresser can’t believe how hard it is and although she is fully trained and working in Hairdressing - her dog goes to the groomer. So thankyou so much for sharing with us 🐶🐾🐾🐾🐾🐶💟

Sometimes shaving the coat down and starting fresh is the best option. It depends on several different factors. Obviously how matted the coat is matters, but also whether the dog will tolerate it or not is very important to consider. Unfortunately there's no one right answer for all situations. You have to take all things into consideration and do what is best for both you and your dog.

I have a great pyrennees rescue dog and I have been trying to groom him as best I can, I had no experience with a coat like his. Your video is very helpful. Brushing him is even more important because I have never been able to wash him. His first owner would actually "waterboard" him every time she saw him chasing her chickens. We are talking about a 4 month old puppy. Because of his early trauma I have never been able to wash him outside like my labrabor. He watched me washing and refilling dog bowls with the hose every day, but it was months before he would not run to the far end of the yard. It doesn't bother him now (he will be 3 years old this summer) but I am careful not to splash him. If he gets even the slightest overspray he doesn't freak out but he will get up and move. He hates getting caught in the rain too. If I can ever get all the mats out I would love to give him a bath, he is a beautiful dog even without a proper bath. He is a gentle and loving dog and I don't want to do anything to lose him his trust. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thank you. I always ask to keep my shih tzus short because they matt so easily. I have 3 and each has different fur types, so 2 matt way more than the last. I have seen several, and by that I mean all, of the previous groomer tool videos on here say to basically throw out the comb that they themselves never use! I am so happy to see your video. I never realized in my 15 years of ownership that I should really be brushing and combing at home. NO ONE has ever even suggested it to me, and frankly we have never encountered a kind groomer like yourself so I am not surprised. You are a unicorn! I do understand; however, because I am often told that I am also one in my field. I also do not understand that people in my field "grow out of" treating people with great care. I often read facebook group discussions by newer grads who complain about patients because they themselves have no patience. It's so disturbing and now I see how it is more of a people not an occupational problem. That is just the sad part of society and the me mentality of nowadays I suppose. Keep up the great work and thank you so much for sharing the first great informative vidoes I have watched about dog grooming!

I have watched about half the videos you have posted so far because I just love your techniques, and understanding of our furry friends. I will be getting my first dog later on this year (maltese terrier) which I understand need daily brushing due to the hair coat rather then fur. So I really appreciate you explaining what is going on beyond the 'shedding' of the coat. And also how to handle a dog while grooming. Thank you so much for your videos...love from Australia :-)

Thank you so much for watching our videos and for the very encouraging comment!! We wish you all the best with your future furry friend! I love a quote from my mentor, Cesar Milan: "We don't always get the dog we want, but we always get the dog we need." Thank you so much, and please accept our love from Atlanta, GA!
