In this video I want to combine multiple Microsoft Word documents into a single document. There's more than one way that I can do this. The method I use will depend on whether or not I want to preserve the original documents' format in the merged document.
I also need to decide whether I want to create links between the original documents and the merged document. If I establish a link, changes to the individual documents can be updated in the merged document with a simple click.
Finally I want to export the merged document to pdf.
Table of Contents:
00:00 - Introduction
00:28 - Merge documents and keep source formatting
03:16 - Merge multiple documents - quicker method but you lose the source formatting
05:17 - Solution to documents being merged in the wrong order
06:50 - Merge documents and link to original - update with a click!
08:27 - Export merged document to pdf

Holy cow. I had Ctrl+C'd and Ctrl+V'd like 20 times trying to get the formatting to stay the same and all I had to do was use the button at the top?!?! 😂😂 Thank you, sir! 👍👍

After investigated the software limits I initially decided to have one large document on a day-to-day basis, thus avoiding this merge process. However, when it came to asking a dispersed set of friends to proofread chapters I had to extract chapters anyway, still not a problem. But working with the single document, even with the powerful use of the navigation guide capabilities, sorting materials (on a single document and in my head) was too big a bite. It now makes more sense to create each chapter separately and to learn how to merge and still maintain the desired formats and heading order, and footer sections, etc. We'll see if I change my mind, but with a lot of stray notes and a currently necessary re-write of my first draft, it's making more sense to write by the chapter folder, then combine later. Electronically it's easier to make one large file, but functionally it's too cumbersome if large edits are needed. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Very useful and a great video as usual. Particularly liked the way you showed how to merge and then print [publish] to a pdf at the end - that is something I've been stumbling over for a long time. Do you allow your viewers to suggest topics that they would like to see covered?

Thanks, and this is very useful. However, if one of the documents is in column format, the special paste of maintaining the original format of the pasted contents seems to be not working. Or did I miss anything?

The insert link of a document, and have the merged doc as automatically updated is very handy.

is there a way to keep one type of formatting (ex: underlining) from one doc while keeping all other formatting in the doc that you're merging into?

Is this method the new way to do Master Documents and subdocuments, or it's something independent? Thank you.

Why sometimes we print documents or even in pdf, the size looks normal readable on the screen, but when you print, it's miniature size font. What causes this. I receive documents like that, and I don't know what they did to mess up the size.

I watched this video twice, but I'm still having major problem with formatting that I can't find a way to fix.
