I got a H1N, I'am not able to set enough gain on the device without getting distorted signals. When I set the gain down, I get some crack sound in some of the tracks, especially in kick sounds, maybe the missing gain interrupts in some ways idk. Will this setup with the attenuation cable fix this? Because I could set more gain on the zoom H1N? thanks!
Hey RedHotMartinpepper, You're getting distortion or clipping because your audio is going beyond the 'zero level' which is the clipping zone. The Attenuation cable will give you more headroom so you don't wont get the distortion/ clipping. It usually happens with drums and when your your tracks are too loud. So yes the cable will definitely fix that. Let me know your results
This was happening to me when I was digitalising my vinyl collection into the zoom h1n! Songs were distorting at whatever gain I set it to. It’s not something I could’ve easily figured out on my own. I’m going to do as you suggested and get cables like these to hook up to my phono preamp so I can finally digitalise my collection. Thanks for your very helpful video!
Brilliant video. Thank you for putting this information forward. The how it sounds before and after is valuable to observe. Not many other vids feature this. Great
Rob Wainwright Hey Rob, Thanks for watching and your comments. I think actual demonstrations are needed on all audio videos for sure. It helps the watcher more
Just ordered the cables. Lets see if it works. My dj set sounded distorted . Crackling noise. If it doesn't work gonna ret hn1 to guitar center lol. Attenuation cabel was 28 bucks on ebay.
Your videos are great, straight to the point and clear to understand, this was exactly what I was looking for! One question, do I need the splitter if I have a 2 phono to single 3.5mm jack cable? Thanks in advance
Julian Voigt Wedding Films Hi Julian, Thanks for the comments 😁 As the attenuation cable has a male 3.5mm, you’d need the splitter to have a female 3.5mm. I found the audio will clip without the attenuation cable.
If you use the locut filter in the H1N and lower the intensity of it around 50%, and process the audio in software later to make it sound good. Would that also work? or Do I need to have attenuation cable?
hi bro, what if i remove the miniplug-miniplug cable out? and i connect it with a male cable directly in the H1N??? can it works? or is it neccesary??? :)
Acupuncture Continuing Education Online Hey, Thank you so much for your kind comments and buying through the links. I’m creating an Audio course at the moment so keep a watch out for that 😁
I just ordered the H1N to replace my Tascam DR-07 however feel already now some regret. This is not the same as line level input (like at my Tascam DR-07) when you need to weaken the signal to meet the input level of a microphone. I think there are two resistors inside this annuation cable, nothing special. The problem is when you need an extra sensitive amplification step, it will introduce NOISE. Higher noise floor. Weaken the signal and after this amplify it. Maybe it also a little biased, to correct some characteristcs of a microphone, no 1~1. The input is not a microphone. It would be better to bypass the microphone amplification circuitry however this device is unable to so. Useless in my opinion, this 'feature' is not a feature, recorder is not designed to do this. This is a huge downside not to buy this recorder when you want to record from line outputs.
Hey there, The Tascam DR-07 has a Stereo mic/line input similar to the H1. They both take a line-level source through the mini-jack stereo input. So both recorders have very similar connections. I've never had any issue with noise floors getting raised when using my digital recorders. What are you hoping to record?
Thanks for this (hopefully) very useful video! So, I got the attenuation cable and the adapter. But I only get signal in one channel. Would the fault most likely be in the attenuation cable or in the adapter? Or is there some kind of a setting that I am not aware of? I tried the H1n using auto level and limiter, but got clippings when recording a live dj set, so I would very much like your trick to work!
Christian Herseth Sørensen Hi Christian, It may the Cable or Adapter you’ve got. Maybe return them both and get a new set. There won’t be any setting in the H1. The auto level or limiter in the H1 won’t work as well in this case.
Can I plug a digital keyboard directly to the line input on the H1 using an 1/4 inch to 3.5 (aux cable, male on both sides) adapter Or is it best to go through the mixer using the method you described in this video? Thanks Greetings from Houston Texas
Hi Ravkan, thanks for this video, totally saved me! I wanted to enquire about once I've done this, how do I then put a line out from the H1 into my android phone so the sound from the mixer can go into my livestream DJ set that's I'm filming through Streamlabs and Twitch on my phone?
How long can we record audio from mixer using h1n ? Can this h1n recorder be used for recording audio from weeding reception that sometime last for 4 hrs
Would I set the h1n to line level record? As I will use this for weddings can I set and forget or can it get to low that I can’t bring the audio up enough later? Also if I am using an aux out will I still have this issue. Thanks
Hey MJS, When you connect a mic level output to a level input, incoming audio will be very low. If you connect a line level output from mic level input, the audio will be too loud and will clip and distort your audio.
very informative! just want to ask, is there a difference in sound quality using this tutorial (h1) vs the h4n recording to the mixer (your previous tutorial). Tnx in advance.
Dabol Yuh Hi Dabol, Thanks! As long as you record at the highest bit on either device, you shouldn’t notice a sound difference. Just don’t record in mp3 and make sure the H1 / H4n (and all cables) are fully working. What will you be recording?
Hello, Thank y ou for sharing your experience RavKan.. do you know if using the H1n with the LINE IN instead of the MIC in, and also using the auto limiter will do the trick?, any thoughts on that?.. or anyone that tried this?.. im trying to get away to shoot a wedding using 2 or 3 H1n since these are small.. also another question.. (im new with audio stuff).. u think using H1 (or H1n) with the on-built microphones and placing it near the Speakers (with autolimiter on) would give a nice result to have as Back Up in case the Line-in from the DJ mixer fails?.. what are your thoughts about that?. thanks buddy. best
Nicolas Merono I’ve tried the Line in method many times years ago on weddings but it was resulted in clipped audio. I’ve never had much luck with the Auto Limter either. I like to be in control of my audio and not rely on Auto features. Yeh place a few H1’s around the room will work but i wouldn’t place them too close to the speakers. I usually get to a venue early and speak to the DJ or Band and see what audio setup they have.
@@RavKan that was fast, thank you, i will use the attenuation cable for the line in... as for the H1n and the distance to the speaker.. i was thinking to set it in a very low level maybe in top of the speaker or something so i can cut the ambient sound as much as possible.. i dont rely on DJ's and i usually shoot alone with 2 cameras simultaniusly so i can't check the audio levels.. but of course i will try to do a sound check before the reception starts.. one more question... how lower you can go with levels without loosing quality if you have to increase the DB on post?.. meaning, if i just leave it lets say, half the graphics level (so i can leave room in case they increase the volume).. will that audio work later in post?, thanks buddy, great channel
Nicolas Merono I cant answer that. You have to test it out but I wouldn’t keep the audio too low. Also speak to the DJs. They’re just people doing a job 👍🏽
Bert Coertjens Hi Bert, That’s fine until the DJ / Band lowers or increases their volume throughout the whole set. You’d have audio that clips in places and may be too quiet in other places. The attenuation cable will keep these levels consistent based on the settings you select on the H1
I love this video and it has helped me narrow down my search as to what I can use to record high quality audio at a lower cost. But are there any other links to attenuation cables for the US? I want to support your channel as well, but the attenuation cable linked is not available :/ Thanks so much for this tutorial!
Hey Kalai, Happy that the video helped. The MOVO cable is quite popular and usually sells out. Just search Amazon for '3.5mm Male Line-in to Male Microphone Attenuator Cable' . Click on the Sescom cable, that will do the same as the MOVO cable. Hope that helps
Hi Ravkan, Have a Zoom Q8 camera to record live video performance of mainly guitar and vocals with backing track sometimes. Is this the same procedure to connect the mixer to Q8. Enjoy your videos thank you. Cheers, Kev
Hey Kevin. I'm not sure about the Q8 camera but it does take XLR and Line Level inputs so you could connect a mixer to it. You'd have to try and see if it works
Hey Benjamin, Unfortunately I haven't tested any other attenuation cable so can't really advise. Can you not buy it from the Amazon links in the video description?
Will using line in instead of mic in work ok if I’m getting a source from the back of a speaker at a wedding via an xlr to 3.5 mm adaptor? Or will I still need this cable?
Alfa Medtech Alfa Medtech Hey Alfa, Yeh it will. Any source going into the Mixer, the H1 will record it. I wouldn’t personally use the H1 to record important events like wedding speeches on a H1. I’d use the H4n instead.
Hi RavKan, Thanks for the video. If I used 3.5mm stereo jack socket to 2 phone plugs audio cable. instead of 3.5mm jack socket to 2RCA adapter + male to male 2RCA?
JJWalker Hey JJWalker, The attenuation cable will reduce a hot signal no matter what device you need to connect to the mixer. If you can guarantee the audio will have a constant volume with no clipping then no you wouldn’t need it
I ran into the opposite problem when connecting the headphone/line out from the h1n into the line in from my audio interface. The signal was very low. Do i have to use a di box? Could i connect the h1n to things like guitar effect pedals?
@@RavKan until now I've just used 2of the input Jacks ( because the zoom is stereo) of the mixer. I can hear the mic but no recording. You use the tape in and out (rca) on yours correct? Thanks
@@RavKaninteresting I haven't noticed that yet. I've used it a bunch too this way. It would clip when dj cranks up the music but then would auto adjust down to an appropriate level
Grant Johl Hey Grant, I’ve only used the -35dB cable as it works perfectly for my setup. If you push the levels quite high on your mixer and want to be ‘clip free’ then a higher -dB cable would work the best.
Declan McGinley Hey Declan, 1. Plug the “save your life cable” (Attenuation cable) into the Zoom H1 2. Plug that into the other end of the RCA Adapter Cable 3. Plug that RCA Adapter cable to RCA cables already connected to the DJ’s mixer.
Please make video on how to do those steps , I dont really understand on the part "Plug that RCA Adapter cable to RCA cables already connected to the DJ’s mixer." , I mean how do you connect them to DJ's mixer, I dont have a mixer but I know a mixer has so many jack output, but which one???
Won't help. I tried recording some cassettes from the line out of my cassette deck and even though the level was below 0db and the red light was not blinking the audio was still messed up. The signal that goes in is just way too hot and even lowering the rec level won't fix that problem.
@@RavKan I was talking to "Compositor Carlos Moto". To Me it sounded like he thought that he didn't need this cable cause of the rec level control of the zoom h1. But that isn't true. If the signal is too hot you still need that cable cause the rec level control ALONE won't help.
freund333 You will definitely need an attenuator to lower the signal because your audio will clip without it. You can hire a sound guy who’d take care of the audio but the cable is cheaper, ha
