How to connect BMS to 24 volt lifepo4 battery in a safe manner and to insure that your balance leads are correctly wired.
I waited for almost 2 and half months for these batteries to arrive. I will be installing these batteries in my van conversion. I have 8 cells that I will put in series to make a 24 volt battery.
I hope this video is helpful to some people out there that is interested in this kind of content or busy with battery builds of there own.
Come follow me on my journey as I convert my 2015 Ram Promaster 2500 159 inch wheelbase into a tiny home and explore the world. For anyone interested in tiny homes, alternative lifestyles, minimalism and just pure adventure follow me on this journey as I embark on this DIY project and start my van build of my tiny home on wheels.

I'm only like10 minutes into this video and I can already confirm that this is the most helpful video I've found when connecting an 8s battery. Thank you! I feel that a lot of video creators skip over the "basic" stuff because they don't remember that they didn't understand it at one point. Very impressive video. I ordered a new 280A 3.2 LiFePO4 today for $212 from Ebay as a backup for my 16 battery 24v system. My BMS on the 2nd battery pack always showed one battery low. I checked the voltage today and it was 2.0V. I pulled that battery out and running it on a balancer (all day so far). I pulled another battery to connect it together to balance it faster; the connecting bar got pretty hot for 10 mins. I think the battery is not broken, just needed additional balancing. Your video helped me on how to connect my 200A 8S BMS to this number 2 battery pack. Installing the BMS as a leg on the negative side!

Greetings excellent video but I have a question about the configuration of charging the batteries, what would be the numbers for mppy Float voltage and absord voltage?
@thinkfreelivefree6951
@thinkfreelivefree6951 2 года назад
Hi Jose. Thank you for watching and for your support. Great question, it depends on many factors including your battery chemistry. If you have a lifepo4 battery and you don't want to fully charge it to 3.65 volts per cell because you want your cells to have a longer life. I have my bulk voltage set to 28.2 volts (3.52 per cell) and my float voltage set to 27.6 volts. But with lifepo4 float is not really required, these are really parameters for lead acid batteries. My inverter has a setting for lifepo4 and the bulk and float are locked together, so whatever you put your bulk to the float will automatically be the same number. Hope this helps. Please consider subscribing if you found the content useful. Thanks.

You have about the same setup as I have recently built. Have you done a capacity test on any of your cells yet? I have 16 of the lifepo4 varicore 310ah cells from AliExpress and have been running them a few weeks now. They came pretty much balanced voltage wise. I paralleled the 2 8s banks for about a day to make sure there wasn’t much current transfer when I built the 2 24 volt banks. I also want with the Daly smart bms 200 amp. My inverter has a maximum dc input current rating at 175 amps so I wanted to make sure both of the bms’s would give it what it wanted. I will be placing a 150 amp inline fuse soon to protect a malfunction somewhere. I can also set safety parameters in the bms to stop current at so much charge/discharge if I need to. I ask about your capacity testing because these cells have only been giving and taking about 290-300 ah so far. I hope mine aren’t used with lowered capacity. I could have done a test better probably also but I was hoping to get 310 or more.
@thinkfreelivefree6951
@thinkfreelivefree6951 2 года назад
Hi Joshua, thank you for your post. I have not had time to do a capacity test as I was trying to get everything installed in my Van. I think you are spot on with the 290 to 300ah. My cells were also fairly close in voltage, however, I did do a top balancing. I have set my parameters on my Growatt for a max charge of 28.2 volts or 3.525 volts per cell. So, I am not pushing them to a full charge of 3.65. Do you have a shunt setup? Thanks for watching.

@thinkfreelivefree6951
@thinkfreelivefree6951 3 года назад
Hi. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement and for watching. I chose a 100 amp BMS because that will provide at 24 volts, 2400 watts of power. I may upgrade that in the future, but should be sufficient for my needs at the moment. The math works like this, very simple. To determine what size BMS you need. Volts x Amps = Watts. So in my case 24 volts x 100 amps = 2400 watts. If I wanted to use my full capacity of my 3000 watt inverter, I would take 3000watts/24 volts = 125 amps. I hope this is helpful to easily choose what size BMS you need. Thank you for watching and for your support. Please consider subscribing if you found the content useful. Thanks.

@thinkfreelivefree6951
@thinkfreelivefree6951 2 года назад
Hi Kevin. Thank you for watching and for your support. I appreciate the feedback and that is a great question. So the way to pick your bms, size your bms for the amount of watts you will be using divided by your battery bank voltage. In my case for example, I have a 3000 watt inverter and a 24 volt battery, so 3000/24 = 125 amps. So I went with the 100 amp bms because it was half the price, but it also means that I must not exceed 2400 watts (100 amps x 24 volts = 2400 watts. At some point I will buy a bit larger bms so I can run the full 3000 watts, but rarely does one use everything all at once. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any more questions. Great question. I also struggled with this one at first. The Ah is really just the storage capacity of your batteries. Take care. Please consider subscribing if you found the content useful. Thanks.

Why didn't u compress the cells...

Hi Zoheb. I did a lot of research before and considered compression, but ended up not going that route as it was not necessary or would have made a huge difference. Thank you for watching and for your support. Please consider subscribing if you found the content useful. Thanks.

Hi Steve, that is very exciting. It surely is hard to wait once you have ordered them. Sorry about your other batteries, that sucks. Thank you for watching and for your support. Please consider subscribing if you found the content useful. Thanks.

Why don't u just test the very last one because if it wasn't wired correctly u wouldn't get 26 volts?

Great question Linda. Actually the checking of each one ensures that you got all your bms leads on each cell positive in the correct order, for example you may put your last lead on the correct cell positive, but maybe 2 and 3 are switched by accident. Then on cell 2 instead of getting 6.6 volts you will get 9.9 volts because 2 and 3 are switched by accident, but the last cell will still read 26.4. I hope that makes sense. If you would connect your bms with the order incorrectly you run the change of the bms burning out. Thank you for watching and for your support.

test them all, only takes 30 seconds and ensures no crossovers, crossovers still will show 26. after all the effortinvolved, you are querying this step?
