I always mess up choosing mono jacks or stereo jacks, but I will try this! I recently made an adapter for RJ45 to headset, so mic + PTT box with a 3,5mm Jack, so I guess I can make a XLR 3.5mm jack from de DI BOX out
I've made my own connecters and homemade adapters for rack gear For use with all sorts of radios. Ptts I've made with old xlr cable and plugs and the audio connection right to the mic jack. I'm so tired of making this stuff. By far go with Heil's ptt( I just bought it) it's so well made and you can replace parts. Heil also has the audio connection from the rack gear to your mic jack ready for a ptt switch. So no more burn holes in your wife's antique table and you won't have to worry about the cat nocking over the soldering iron onto the carpet... The pr40 sounds great with rack gear If your experimenting. You did a great job with your adapters and probably work way better then mine and it's neat to see others do it!
I just recently got the focus rite 4i4 in hopes to do the same thing but I can’t transmit worth crap. I’m getting a ton of reports of massive QRM. I think I may get a mixer to to add into the mix. Great video though. I thoroughly enjoyed it
So I'm running similar setup to you, FT-991A with a Heil PR-781. From the FT-991A, using a Heil AD-1YM adapter, (one side a heil 1/4" ptt switch) the other side 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter => 1/4" audio cable to a mixer, and the mixer to the PR-781 via XLR cable.
Oh good deal! Yeah, most dynamic mics will work with the voltage on the mic jack from the radio. But on a condenser microphone, you will need the phantom power from the mixer. Either way, it's all good fun!
Good job! Thanks to your Elmer, too. My Elmer is 95 now. I love your TenTec. I also think I’ll go thiss route, I’d gottten HEIL’S Parametric Equalizer from DXE but sent it back cuz the sockets were worn and loose fit for supposedly a new device. I. May get one direct from Heil, but also heil has been bought out. You and your clean machines are great, man. Tell your daughter if she wants to travel in space, radio is the ting to learn and touch typing. Thanks.
73's, if I'm not mistaken Heil does makes the adapter kit that mates the XLR TO THE Radio's Mic input plug. . However I like using the Mixer approach a bit better. Great demo on the use of using a pro audio Mic. Or as some musicians would say Stage Mics. Those Mics are a plus when using them for Ham radio for Clairity!
Yes, you are correct. Heil will sell you the connector for your radio and then into the Mic you choose. But what I couldn't find, is Heil selling the adapter from your radio to a line input on the mixing board. I also wanted to run it through a DI box (isolation transformer). Thanks for watching! 73
@@HamRadioTV most Radios have an Line output on them! If not , try using the Headphone output. There should be enough drive to suit your mixers inputs!
So I was going to do this but then realized I could feed the audio through my computer into the radio through CAT. I already had an XLR to USB interface so it was just a matter of adjusting a few sound settings and waulah. Surprisingly, I can't find much on the internet of others doing this with modern rigs...
Couple of interesting bits of information here--Wasn't aware of the Web SDR site, and the brief mixing board demo was intriguing. I'll be checking to see if you have a video particularly on that topic.
Great vid, I’ll check out the link for the deeper dive as well. I found that in your reply to a comment. You should post that link in the description. 73.
since the radio connector is prone to failure, I would always connect all 8 conductors of the cat5 cable to the rj45 crimp connector. cut the unused cable conductor off on the other end.
Great video and something I'm certainly thinking about - but I got a bit lost at teh DI Box ! Is the signal chain : Mic (XLR) > Mixer I/P (providing 48V Phantom Power) > Mixer o/p (jack - adjustable Line Level) > DI Box (jack) > DI Box (XLR) to TxRx via new cable ? Thanks for your help .
Got Your Response, line outputs into Mic input work's if it's High Input but most inputs on radios are around 600 Ohms. So yes a DI interface is much better unless the mixer has a Mic level output on it, either Balanced or unbalanced!
what was the purpose of the DI Box? You called it a match. a DI Box is usually used for impedance matching, but you was using a mixer you should be able to connect the mixer directly to the radio. anyway good video. WN9K
I really want to know how to do all this with Two radios. I have the same 991A and I have an IC7300. Audio, I figure should be fairly simple. Both radios to the mixer, the PC to the mixer, and being able to direct audio to/from all three. Where it will get exciting is using one mic to talk on two radios.-Skip, W5UTW PS I already watched the episode with you and Ken.
We have a new weekly live show on Wednesday and will be discussing exactly this in the next few weeks. We just did one last night on Mic Connectors: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YN2YtOdc7HA.html
Someone should go into business making these cables per radio. Seems like this should be a thing already. I need one for my ft 2900 and I'm getting an Ft-991 as well. It would be cool to run the same mic for both radios. Maybe out from a dual out DI box?
I looking for a cable for the apache labs anan 8000dle, I have the Heil PR77D which is a 3 pin XLR, and i have a foot pedal push to talk, any help be greatly appreciated.
Hi Jason. Fellow AF Vet and Crew Chief here. I’m having a very frustrating time trying to bring my FTM-100DR into a mic and ptt. I made a test board, like Kevin referenced in your other video, but cannot seem to make it all gel. Any chance we can talk?
The direct box acts like a isolator and only allows the audio signal to pass. You don't need one of these, but it would be best practice to keep and ground loops/hums away from your audio.
8:08 where there's a will there's a way... Get yourself a cheap plastic step-stool and a guitar foot switch pedal and bolt or even hot glue that sucker to the stool! They also make add-on foot rests. 😎 MacGyver out... 73!
Great setup, I have the same radio and I'm looking at setting up something similar with boom mike, speaker, and sdr. Did you do a video on the other connections (speaker, computer)? Does the PTT disconnect the SDR as well as the radio when you key up? A friend had a slight delayed feedback when he would listen to SDR when keying up to talk on same frequency.
Thank You! Here is a link Kevin and I did more of a deep dive into using a mixer in the shack. The speaker I use comes off the mixer. The PTT just triggers the radio. I have some ideas how to us a relay to mute the SDR audio, but nothing yet. For now I use headphones when listening to web SDRs. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hdVIUuvm2r4.html
Sandra Abarca Thank You! The mixer is a Mackie Mix Series Mix12FX 12-Channel Effects Mixer. I got it for $20 at a Ham swap meet. It’s still sold on Amazon. Here is the link. Mackie Mix Series Mix12FX 12-Channel Effects Mixer www.amazon.com/dp/B00ND1KHY2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3.ScDbBC8VBH2
That will depend on your radio. The FT-991A only has a RJ45 in the front that will take mic in. Also, certain radios can only power certain microphones. Using a mixer allows the use of any mic and also gives a lot more utility to do other things or send audio to multiple radios.
Boom mic? Is there really such a mic? Or is it becuase you mounted the mic to a boomed mic stand so that is why it's called boom mic? All I know is there are ònly two kinds of mics, it's either a dynamic or concenser microphone. Please enlighten me what's a boom mic. Thank you sir.
Hello Jason, my name is Jason also w2esc I know this video was done some time ago but I have just recently bought an yaesu 991a myself I'm curious with running that type of audio equipment how do you have your radios EQ setup I'm planning to upgrade my microphone soon to a shure sm7 b and would really appreciate it if you could tell me how you have your EQ setup thanks
Hey great name! I run the radio in default EQ settings. I then touch up the EQ on the mixer with just a little of highs, mids and just a touch of lows. I also have the mic gain of the 991A at 10.
I have a custom cable that works direct heil mic to radio, but when i try and use that same cable via a mixer i just get noise as soon as i press the ptt. Even if i disable the channel on the mixer i still get the tx noise.
Need Some Help........ Is it true that if I connect a PR-40 to the mic output on the ft-991 it will damage the mic due to the output power from the transceiver? Im getting a lot of conflicting info and do not want to damage either the 991 or the pr-40.
It sounds like RF is getting into the microphone/mixer circuit. How far is your antenna and can you make the feedback better by lowering your RF output watts?
Hello Many thanks for your video . Please could you help me to connect One Turner +3B microphone on Yaesu Ft 897. In adavcane many thanks for your help
Do you know if this could work with a Yaesu FTM-7250D? It is my mobile radio that I use as a base, it has a MH-48 DTMF microphone with a 6 pin connector. So long as I match the connections like you, I think I'd be on the right track. However, I'm interested in using the mixer to help me add a morse code key and my computer for SSTV but I am not sure if then I would also need to include a PTT switch for those lines too... which I assume would come from the main line going into my radio? I'm a mess haha
You have all good thoughts. I would just pick one thing first and do that. You can run a XLR mic and mixer on just about every radio. Every radio will be different but the essentials are 2 wires for the PTT and two wires for the mic. I did another video that might be of some help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hdVIUuvm2r4.html
@@HamRadioTV thanks for the info! I'm on your longer and more detailed video about how you got this project to work so let's hope for the best! This is a big help to a new guy like me, 73!
Yes, it gets tricky when running a SDR at home. You'll need a way to lift the signal into the SDR and you go to transmit. The MFJ-1708B-SDR does that. Thanks!
Hi, can I connect the headset output from the mic audio console to the db25 input?, headset output is not hi impedance, and is the only output i have on the console
You can run a mic of your choice into a mixer. Then out of the mixer you will run that to the Mic connector of the radio. A custom cable will be needed.
so as we mentioned in messenger your mics are keyed with one keyer not two? so it will be a good test to give your daughter her own keyer on her mic ya????
On my FT-991A I trigger the PTT with the front mic connector and only use one hand trigger. There is a lot of ways you could wire in additional PTT's or even use VOX.
In this video I was using a Mackie Mix12FX. But I use a couple and all different brands. They are all about the same for using them with Ham Radio, it's more about what features they have.
It will keep the radio and the mixing board physically separated in the event a ground loop is present. This could be from the 12VDC circuit and your 120VAC ground. It will work with out it, but could put noise on your signal.
Ah yes, same problem here. But, I built a bench/table that needs a bar stool to sit ate. And, my feet can't touch the ground while sitting. lol I built this bench/table before getting into radio.
Thanks for the information about the microphone I have to original YAESU FT-991 a very nice radio . I would love to be able to put in a EQ at least a four channel. I would appreciate all the help you maybe could give me. 73 AE4OY WILLIE P. EM-81UF South East Georgia
I realized this later too. So, Kevin and I did a deeper dive on a LIVE video. Here is that link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hdVIUuvm2r4.html
Unfortunately I didn't that night. But, the following night I did. I hope to hear you on the air next weekend during Field Day. I plan on doing some live streaming as long as the internet is ok.
Yes, this video served as a intro to the idea. Take a look at this video, we did a much deeper dive: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hdVIUuvm2r4.html
