Math Rock Essentials: A Guitarist's Guide To Math Rock: rb.gy/g6q2yh
Hey there, Steve here, hope you're doing well. I asked my viewers in a recent poll what they struggle with most when learning guitar, and a large majority of them said it was mostly based around practicing guitar. Specifically, how to practice consistently, how much time should they practice, and what to practice. Therefore, I put this video together to help remedy all those common practice problems by providing a simple three step process I developed for myself that has helped me consistently practice guitar over the last few years. I hope you find it useful and feel free to tweak it to suit your own personal preferences.

I feel like people often overlook how important it is to take breaks. A lot of “tips” I heard while learning was “play every day”, but I have found that taking a 1-3 day break really refreshes your drive and focus.

I completely agree. Sometimes passion can lead us to forget to just enjoy it for the moment over the goal

I like writing little etudes around concepts and techniques I want to learn. Sings in much more and helps my writing too.

This is so good and actionable. Basically - just do something but make sure you think a bit before you do

it probably already occurred to you that virtually all of this applies to other instruments/disciplines too, but just want to confirm: this is helpful advice to me as a DAW/synth/EWI person. some of it i already understood but in a less methodical and useful fashion. electronics people who don’t play a another more conventional instrument may need models like this even more than guitarists in fact.

I think it’s important to play songs you really love, because it’s easy to get away from that and feel pressure when there should be none. I started guitar because I loved bands like linkin park and others (which obviously are not the most technically difficult things to play, but it’s what I enjoy!). I also started playing so I could record it for my own little projects. When I got into math rock, I loved it because if the beautiful, unique tunings and sounds. it made me get better when practicing as well, thinking outside the box more. However, with this, social media pages would in turn throw videos of technically amazing players, who’s may or may not resonate to me. Thats not to downplay them as guitarists or musicians (most of them are better players than I may ever be), but it’s something that happens to more people than I think we realize. It is discouraging. It feels like a competition. and I’m not saying that’s any guitarists’ fault, but it happens. The way I personally get back to loving guitar (and in turn, having more motivation to get better) is to not lose track of what you love, and don’t compare yourself. Most non-guitarists will think you’re great anyways, and most mature guitarists will be encouraging and helpful. That’s my two cents. Have fun everyone 😁 and thanks for the video James

😂 🎊 🎉That would be badASS! Do the whole song though because it’s only 3 minutes and there is a lot of dynamics in the guitar parts to consider. (Mingling of the two Melodies, I mean, I think?!? 🤔) You’re literally a badass Steve. I’d love to come live and learn guitar near you somewhere and start a band for real lol 😅

If I’m not learning to play music (ie learning a song, riff, or lead) , writing something of my own, or jamming with others, I have little motivation. I think for me playing guitar is fun and not a chore, and forcing rigid structure into the experience ruins it.
