This video just saved me a hell of a problem. My pc was built by a store (I only chose the components) and i updated my bios so all the settings were restored to default and pump fans went crazy. I had no idea how the cooling was connected and Google/YT were of no help. After explaining 3pins=DC and 4pins=pwm, I checked the specifications of my cooling and boom problem solved. Thank you alot and please keep these videos coming ❤️ love from Kuwait 🇰🇼
@@mikesunboxing hi Mike, I have msi z490m-s01 and my sys fans has 3 pin connected, but BIOS shows me only PWM mode and rpm always 1000 so how to control it in that case ?
Thank you for this video! I just set up a new computer with an MSI motherboard and had no idea how to get the fans to turn down, they were so loud! The fan hub for my case fans was set to DC but they were PWM! As soon as I set it to auto they calmed right down. Now I can actually get some work done, thank you!
This is a great guide! It answered all of my questions and also made me realize how overkill my fans were running. I finally set a curve and it’s so much easier to hear my games now!
Bruh I thank you so much lmao. I went from two 120mm PWM fans to two noctua 140mm redux for intakes and they were so loud. Didn't even think about changing to DC. Love ya and keep up the good work!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! I just built a new system last weekend (I'm fairly certain I've already told you about it as pertaining to another video or two of yours that I watched) and this really explains much that I needed to know. I'm going to reboot now, go into my bios and check my CPU fan. I am now subscribed!!!
This video saved me a headache! One day my pc started shutting of by itself, first started when i was rendering a video on premiere..First thought was oh no another amd thing happening to my pc..then my assumption shifted to overheating. This helped my reconfigure my fans! And all is good thanks!!!
Long comment but for anyone out there who this can be useful for: Recently upgraded my PC, still new to PC building and this upgrade was my first time using anything more than stock cooling (I got myself an EK AIO Elite, because why not). Got a Ryzen 7 5800X and an MSI B550 MAG Tomahawk with a 3070, and was blessed with the beloved red CPU light after I put everything together. Fans spun and lit up *quietly* and all was well but no post! A tech at Microcenter was able to figure out that it was a loose PSU cable apparently, and the PC boots now but surprise!! When you power the PC on the CPU light still turns on, but goes away after a few seconds, and then the fans start REVVVVVING at about their 100% just seconds after for a while, and were revving heavy on and off for a while until I was able to come across this wonderful video. Still nervous about my PC, I have a feeling I need to repaste my CPU perhaps, but we shall see. It might be hot, and it doesn't help that Speccy won't show me temp readings because it just says AMD K17 many times again and again. Will be fiddling around in the days that come hoping to get the current ambient temperature (55 C according to the BIOS) down to around 40C-45 C, or anything less than 55 C. Haven't figured out how to check thermals under load but we'll see what I do... This PC build project has taken much longer than I would've hoped (still waiting to get some screws that were missing from the EK AIO, missing an exhaust fan at the moment...), but this channel has actually had a video for EVERY since issue I've come across so far. My personal favorite PC channel on the internet, thank you so much Mike and good luck to all of you that encounter any roadblocks!
You should not have to go into your bios to monitor thermals. Google a compatible hardware monitor for your pc. I GUARENTEE your problem is the fact that you has a POS motherboard (nice and cheap/old too).... and are trying to use a 3070 on it. Also, your cpu is now about 3 generations old if not more, so you could be bottlenecking your GPU via your cpu AND motherboard. SCARED TO EVEN ASK ABOUT RAM, SSD AND PSU...
Great video thanks Mike. Talking of Christmas, the Christmas jumper my kids gave me last year kept picking up static electricity. I took it back and exchanged it for another one - free of charge. Merry Christmas to Mike & Kath and to all at MUB.
Great review as always. I have that A320 board. Works great with my Athlon 220GE and 16GB of 2666 RAM. Love MSI products. Take care and wishing You and your family a warm and happy Christmas. Cheers
Thanks Mike, just one quick question, I noticed when you put the fan speed to a low speed it said " System fan might behave abnormally" should we avoid that warning or it will cause problems in the future. Thanks again
Thanks for this, built my pc last week. MSI mb, graphics & case. Was using the Frozr AI cooling, couldn't understand why (infrequently) the fans were often off until I opened the software, even though it apparently started with windows. Defo worth a sub, many thanks.
Hallo mike. When i play games. Is it better to use extreme performance or i use customize and change cpu fans in user scenario. I have rtx 3080, i7 11000kf and motherboard msi z590. What scenario do you recommend during gaming?
@@kingbarolex9995 yes setup your fan curves in user scenario, maybe aim for 40% at 40c and 60% at 60c and then 100% at 70c, that seems to work well for me and quiet when not under load
Great video! One question though. My MSI motherboard has an onboard chipset fan. How do I change the behavior of that little fan? The noise is annoyingly hight pitched.
Hey, can you tell me why in applcation only CPU Fan & Sys Fan4 have their RPMs when I have two fans for CPU cooler and four system fans (one at back and three at front). Are we able to control all of them separately? Is is something ot be done with connecting fans properly to motherboard? Great video, hlpem me a lot and looking forward answer :)

This is just what I needed after building a PC for my son. His CPU keeps overheating so will use the above to fix. I'd love you to do a video on the MSI BIOS one day, I can't find out how I set my son's memory to PC3200Mhz, it seems to default to PC1066MHz even though it is definitely 3200.
Hey Mike, nice video. Just wondering what you said and did powering all fans into Sys Fan1 on motherboard. It looks msi has provided 6 x Sys Fan headers 12v each. I don't know how many fans you plugged in let's suppose them to be 4 and 4x12v =48v. So, how is that safe to plug 48v all together in 1 Sys Fan Header. Pls reply as I am at the end of assembling my pc, just fan work remains. Thanks
never use more than 4 fans on a single header, if you want to connect a lot of fans used a powered hub. You should be adding Amps and watts rather than volts
cpu fan headers are often split into two headers, for connecting coolers such as the arctic freezer 34 esports duo, which has two fans so you can plug each fan into it's own socket or header
Great video, I have MSI morter max 450 version, tried to upgrade the HDD, it worked but I don't know why casing RGB and fan are not working. am not sure about the wired connection, I checked and it's fine. @@mikesunboxing got you, thanks. My fans are def super quiet now at idle but I have a question about their sound at max settings in high on life on gamepass. They go from about 400rpm to 900-1000. Hi, Mike. Thanks for this video, and the others you've done covering the MSI BIOS. After using Macs for the past 13 years, I'm doing my first PC build in many years for my new music production system. I've ordered an MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus, and will be using it in an NZXT H510 case; I'll also be using Arctic P12 PWM PST fans. I recently saw this about the H510 online, and it got me thinking: “One thing I will say about airflow in the 510, put the 2 fans as exhaust, no front intakes. This is contrary to most popular info, but it's not an ordinary situation: that case works far better thermally in a totally negative setup, especially for the GPU.” With that in mind, is it possible to completely disable fans in the MSI BIOS? Ideally, I would like to install the two intake fans at the front of the case and test it out, and then just disable them if they do indeed cause problems. Thanks!
@@mikesunboxing I want to adjust fans based on the liquid temps. The carbon ek x board should have a temp header but alas no. Another question for you regarding this board. The manual stats it can support 2 3.2 type one connections to the case and 4 usb 2. Ther are only 1 and 2 headers for these respectively. Do I need a splitter cable or some out board controller to manage this? Building in a lian li xl case

How are your fans at 300RPM, mine were at 6K with my PC at like 50 degrees on PWM. I have Vetroo V240 CPU Cooler and switched to DC it dropped only to 3.8K…????
What is the point of configuring it in the bios if you're going to end up controlling it in the software? Is it basically incase the software goes down the bios settings take over?
it gives the software the correct settings for PWM or DC control before the software loads, you can do either but both seems to work better in my experience
Wish I'd of found this video a couple of days a go, would of saved a lot of head scratching with my first pc build. Quick question, when I change the Dram settings in XMP profile 1 to the right mhz (3600) When I save and exit and it re-boots it flashes up that the pc has been changed to gaming mode then goes to the home screen to log in, the fans are now running a t a faster speed than what I had set them (not got to MSI centre yet) IF I go back into the bios to see if I can change the settings the bios is locked in the the mouse pointer doesn't work nor the keys? Hey Mike. Question: Would I still be able to control each separate fan if they're connected to a 1 to 2 PWM splitter? As the motherboard I'm planning to get is an MSI z690i Unify, and it only has 3 headers for fans, but I plan on using 6, so I decided to just use 3 1 to 2 splitters to accommodate all 6 fans.
Hi Mike, I'd highly recommend Argus fan software. You can do a demo but it is a paid software, you do get a licence for two PC's so works out about £5 each. The thing you can do with Argus is control the fans from whatever heat source you want, so if you got fans directed to the GPU ie: below, or for gaming the GPU will be the hottest point to control. You can also do a duel heat source, ie: CPU and GPU so depending on which one is hottest that will control the curve. I haven't found any other software that can give control of fans from the GPU that is easy to use. Also compatible with all not locked to just one motherboard. Hope you have a look and don't mind the comment, would make a great video for you to do. Thanks you.
I setup the "Custom" scenario in "user scenarios". Is there a way to stop it from automatically switching between user scenarios (Extreme/balance/silent)? It doesn't appear there is. I disabled the "smart priority" thinking maybe that would do something, but it didn't.
Hello Mike, thanks for this tutorial. I cannot find a way to adjust the step-up-time in MSI Center. This feature is only offered in the bios? In the bios there are only three options and I hoped the MSI Center being more flexible, but there seems to be no step-up-time-feature at all. Do you know more about it? Cheers.
@@mikesunboxing In the Bios it is called "step up time" and "step down time" (in my bios on the left). You can choose 0.2, 0.3 and 0.7s. Btw, in my MSI Center (newest version) there is no "CPU Fan". I have no option to adjust fans! MSI support is informed and I wait for the answer. Maybe it's due to my PC model (Creator P100A 11-TD), where MSI doesn't want it or I have the wrong MSI Center.

I got a MSI Z690 board and put in five PWM 3-pin fans. I used a Y-splitter that's for both 3-pin and 4-pin connectors. It works, but I can't control them and want them to run with less RPMs. When i go in to check the BIOS it only shows PWM and not DC even though they are 3-pin. I've unplugged the splitter thinking it was fooling the motherboard because it's connecting with a 4-pin end into the system fan port. No change, still only shows PWM. Any ideas? Should I just buy another set of 4-pin fans? Also if I use the two Noctua low-noise adapters I have on them between the fan and Y-splitter that should work right?
