How To Control Case & CPU Fans With ASUS Motherboards UPDATED for 2022.
Are your PC fans running to loud? Are your fans not cooling your PC? They might not be set up correctly.
In this video we will be going through in detail how to configure your ASUS motherboard to get your fans working the way YOU want them to.
We will be covering BIOS / UEFI settings and then using Fan Xpert 4 and AI Suite 3 to have finer control and be able to change settings on the fly in Windows so you won't need to reboot in to the BIOS every time you want to make a change.

Thank you for the video. I did find that when i downloaded the latest AI Suite 3 it did not have the FanXpert4 option but did in the Armoury Crate software. I uninstalled AC and installed version 3 of AI S3 . All seems to be working ok now thanks to you. No more loud fans.

I have always loved and used this feature on our ASUS mobos. I could be mistaken, but always thought when hitting Optimize, the BIOS could tell when it went through the process, what fans were PWM and what fans were DC and automatically made the adjustments based on that, alleviating needing to select PWM or DC beforehand.

sometimes it will do that, but i have found it a little hit and miss over the years, so i try and manually tune to my preferred noise and cooling profiles

I noticed on B550F this changed the minimum allowable PWM percentages for some fans. Some wouldn't go below 40 but could go down to 20% after the utility was run. Pretty cool (pardon the pun)

Just went into my ASUS BIOS and checked: it already had the designations for the fans correct (PWM and DC) which occured when I set it to initialize the Optimization process, w/o needing me to designate them beforehand. This in our world, SHOULD be this simple.

I’m not a fan of armory crate either. I don’t like my mobo rgb to be on when the system is powered off or in sleep so I set them to off in the UEFI. Every time I fiddled with armory crate the rgb would stay on when I shut the system down. Turns out there is a setting in the program and be default sets the rgb to on when in off or sleep state. Took me a hot minute to figure that out and stop it.

Thanks a lot for this amazing video! I have one last question: In the AI suite, there is a button "Source" for the chassi fans. What options can be chosen there? I am used to "chain" my case fans on the VRM-temp of the cpu, so they go up and down very smooth which works for gaming and rendering load. Can you choose the vrms as a temperatur source or what options are behind that button? Thanks a lot!

Only in the bios I believe giving the option for cpu or motherboard and maybe another sensor but check the bios for the header /s in question

Will give this a try - i appear to have 1 dodgy fan (middle front 3) which is suddenly noisy as hell (all pretty much brand new set of 3 phanteks 140’s) but I’m pretty sure that it’s since armoury crate decided it wanted to set a profile because if I went back in and said “silent mode” it did work but it’s almost as if now normal running low temps has this dodgy fan running faster than the others 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’ve completely uninstalled armoury crate and updated the bios - but still the prob persists so I think I’ll try this before I start unplugging fans because it really shouldn’t be a hardware issue. So I will try this following you’re easy to follow guidence, thanks!!

Thanks a lot for the video. My AI Suite configuration was working perfectly. One day, I started having this problem: whenever my monitor goes into power saving mode (screen off), fans accelerate noisily until I come back and set config to "Silent" mode. Can't figure out why. Looks like the AIO fan is the noisiest (I don't have water cooling, just connected normal fans there) Thanks.

Mike I have a Helios White Edition Case that has 4 fans, 3 front 1 rear... they connect to a Fan hub controller, which draw power via a Sata cable. these fans are unrecognizable by the Bios or Asus software (Definitely and oversight from Asus) the fans connect to the Controller via 3 prongs so assume they are DC, is there any way to modify these fans so that they can be seen via the Bios or replace the controller so that it can be connected to the MB header or disconnect the fans from the controller and connect the fans direct to the Fans Headers so that they can be seen via BIOS? Great review...you'd think Asus would have this kind of information in their documentation or on their RU-vid channel(s). Armory Crate was terrible however, I recently installed it on a TUF Gaming Z590 Plus Wi-Fi and it has been improved however, the BIOS update feature is still garbage. I use it for driver updates and it seems to find the latest drivers fairly well. My pet peeve in the past few years is the fact that case manufacturers are still supplying DC fans in their new cases. The costs difference to them would be very minor to supply 4 pin PWM fans yet they do not which means the customer or builder then has to invest $15 to $25 for each DC fan they want to replace with PWM. In some cases, this is another $75 added to the price of a case. PWM fans will spin at lower RPM's vs DC fans and if the CFM cooling is not in demand, a DC fan will continue to spin at its slowest speed which tends to be a good 40% faster than a PWM slowest speed. In other words, the RPM range with PWM fans is much wider than the DC fans therefore providing a much better cooling solution and less noise and less dust going into the case.

I know I have said this before and Mike, you have commented on it, but I cannot be the only one out there who would just a soon have a case listed at a lower price, sans fans and allow me to go purchase what fans I want to outfit the case with, as opposed to providing me with THEIR fans. And yes, I understand the cost of the fans to them is less than they would be for me, but....

@@PapaMav Supplied PWM fans are going to be a better value than no fans at all. Regardless of the brand, most any PWM fans are fairly reliable and even with bushings vs. real bearings, they will last long enough to earn their keep. As it is now, most of us are basically getting cases with fans we won't use so the makers aren't going to drop the price of their cases by $50 by eliminating 2 or 3 fans.

@@Garth2011 that's IF quality fans are supplied. You overlook, often, the fans supplied w/cases are not quality at all. I still would rather have a lesser priced case sans fans, and I can go buy my own fans of my choosing, at the cost of my chosing. I am not being unrealistic here and would never look for or expect a "$50" price drop on a case just 'cause it don't come w/fans, so, not sure where you are coming up with that # from.

@@SmittyAZ For Windows 11 you have to install Crate, i tried Aura it wont start it is missing a file from Crate. And after installing Crate i had issues, like freezings and hard resets. I googled it and the issue is known for years also in Windows 10. Aura alone no issue.

depends on the sensor, there are a few around and you can tell the fan headers which sensor to monitor on most boards, the only exception being the CPU fan header that will always monitor the CPU temp sensor

Hi Mike, What if the case which in my case is a Asus Helios White edition the asus built in fan controller in the case connects via a Sata Power connection? In Bios or armory crate it’s doesn’t show the additional 4 fans however when I test the option CPU fan in both BIOS and AC it tests all fans and all run…. Additionally I have updated the AMD AM5 Chipset BIOS. The MB is a Asus ROG Strix 670E-A.

Do you have control over PCH fan speed using Fan Xpert? I notice you have a PCH fan on your mobo as well - mine is slightly noisy but I've had iffy experiences with Xpert in the past. I'd rather not reinstall it unless it has this capability, which seems to be absent from BIOS.

I plug have 3 plugs for case/chassis fan on the motherboard (asus tuf 570 gaming plus) i have 4 case fans. I wonder is it better to have it into the aio or the CPU opt plug. Either way the 4thfan seems to spin a lot faster than the others. In the cpu opt I don't know how to control the speed I guess I should try aio again and use this software

Hey Mike my motherboard DOES seem to detect the fans and they look to spin in the image in the bios. However, when I actually look at my 2 case fans (corsair 4000 D Airflow) they never are spinning. I followed the steps in this guide too. I have a sata usb 3.1 from the case that is not plugged in to anything due to no ports in my motherboard. Could this be the problem? Thanks

the BIOS is in control during startup and also tells the software what type of fans are connected, i think i did explain that in the video, but anyway you need to do it in both places or it won't work as expected, trust me i know this

Hi Mike, thank you very much for your help but, my Asus strix z490 e gaming, only show rpm on vrm hs fan, but the 3 chassis fans is connected to the case fractal meshify 2 xl, its normal not showing, but i need to know if the corsair h115i rgb platinum pump and cpu must show rpms , or not. the fans spins and the pump works. you might need to configure the fan headers in the bios to suit the connected fans either 3 pin DC or 4 pin PWM same for the CPU cooler

Hi, is it possible to set pwm mode to completely stop the fans if temp goes below a threshold? I'd like to do that at least for the chasis fans when pc is idle. I found that is it possible to do that if I set fans to dc mode instead of pwm, but im not sure if thats a good config

you can but not all fans support zero rpm. you might be able to force that by using DC mode and dropping the voltage low enough

Hello Mike, I have the Asus TUF X570 Plus with Bios version 4021. I have a 3 pin Fan connected to the AIO Fan header. But when going into BIOS I cannot change the settings under the AIO fan header. I ran the optimize all, but still there is no access to modify. Even switching between PWM and DC. But once windows is booted and using ASUS Armoury Crate tool am able to modify all fans to silent mode(luckily). I am curios if the AIO fan header requires a PWM fan to be addressable/adjustable from BIOS.

aio fan header should be set to VDC then a reboot should pick it up, some pumps don't give a rpm readout so just set it to 100% or full as long as it isn't noisy

Hi Mike, how can I stop all the fans from spinning from the BIOS? Not disable but stop them completely. I have a passively-cooled PC and I only need to activate the fans occasionally

Might be a dumb question, but is there a need to change the fan curves in the bios if you are going to use AI suite? I followed the video and did both but wasn’t sure the rationale for doing both. Great video regardless!

i would probably set the fans up in the bios like the DC or pwm settings to make sure the AI suite can control them correctly, but otherwise it is just replication so that on boot up the fans are controlled until the software takes over

cpu option is a secondary CPU fan header not a AIO pump header

Hello, why do you tweak fans inside Bios if AI Suite can mess also with the BIOS but inside Windows, so you don't have to do all that and then reboot?

the bios first to make sure the fans are correctly identified for VDC or PWM and rough settings, then in the windows you can fine tune if needed without having to reboot into the bios

I installed kaspersky yesterday which stopped my ai suite 3 and it was a nightmare to uninstall ai until I found your video, so thanks for that. Eventually I found out it’s a problem with kaspersky as discussed in their own forum so I cancelled& uninstalled it. But the nightmare continues as I had to delete all the ASUS files and start reinstalling with armoury crate before re installing ai suit 3. But there is no home buttons there to control the fans. Turns out that’s also a problem asus couldn’t care to respond. I don’t know much about computers and I don’t want to. and I am so sick of the “we are smarter than the peasants” attitude of all the tech savvy people especially men everywhere since 90s. My ranting is not aimed at you at all but to all the people who are supposedly helping on forums etc. i bought a product, I want it to work. Why do I need a phd on the subject to even begin to understand what the problem is? I don’t even understand the solutions people are offering out there. Does my fan have 4 pins 3 pins? I don’t bloody know. I guess I will have to strip the damn thing to find out. I didn’t even know these things existing on my computer until they caused problems. I had just asked for a decent motherboard for my 3d and visualisation works. I am so overwhelmed as I don’t even have time for this.

I’ve now resolved the issue by uninstalling crate and lightservices through Ccleaner and then some leftovers deleted through registry, I had a link but RU-vid doesn’t like the links apparently, then reinstalled crate and then ai suite. My suite is now back and my pc is back to being silent. Crate still doesn’t have home button but I guess it’s not going to work with my mb. Thanks a million for your offer for help. I will now check out your videos for antivirus as I had to stop the kaspersky and never returning to mcaffee again. I will try to go with windows defender only for now. X

Hi I need some help. I got two NZXT fans and a bequite fan. I noticed these are too loud compared to my three cosair fans with the cooler. if they are not pwm you need to set the port they are attached to as DC and that will work

Rog Dark Hero VII X570 the RPM doesn't work in AI Suite 3 for the PWM Waterpump header even after setting it to PWM in BIOS. It's stuck on percentage settings. Fan is regular D5 PWM versionm from EK.

I just bought a brand new computer case, MS Armor V700 and I was confused that it didn't have a 3 or 4 pin connector for fans, only a single 4 pin Molex connector that connects directly onto a connector from the PSU, and that one is for all for of my fans. 3 fans for air input at the front and 1 fan for air output in the back. Does this mean that Q-fan from UEFI does nothing for me? I went in there and clicked on "Optimize all" without changing anything but idk if it made a difference but it did show CPU fan, CHA1 FAN and CHA2 FAN. How do I set this up? :c My motherboard is ASUS Prime B450M-A. PS: great video. :)

yes molex powered fans will be just a static speed and cant be controlled via the motherboard or software.

Hi MIke, I have an Asus Proart X570 and I had AI suite 3 running all worked well, but only it had no BIOS Update possibility. So I thought delete and re-install it, but now I run into an 2 errors. After install when starting the pc I get "can't open AsIO.sys !! (2) and when I start AI suite 3 I get a bunch of can not load... image errors. So AI suite 3 does not work at all, it not starts. Then I did the FAN tuning in the BIOS as you show in this video, but no matter the settings, FANS are running too high, even in silent mode, there is no difference. The buzzing gives me a headage. Do you have a solution?

when the ASUS software gets messed up it is a nightmare to fix, i have done a video on the asus software removal a few times and it is hit and miss for a lot of people. often going over to the fanspeed software works well, we also did a video on that, might be worth watching. failing that install windows over the top of itself (repair install)

you can do it in the bios and ignore the rest, the windows section is more for tweaking or fine tuning the settings without having to go into the bios to do it

i turned on ai cooling in armory crate out of curiosity and turned it off after a bit but it still seems to be controlling my fans and no matter what i try (changing fan curves, turning auto cooling off in bios etc) it wont deactivate ai cooling, any fixes for this?

you can't really unless you get something like the thermaltake swafan ex rgb and use the thermaltake software that uses the included hub, otherwise a fan hub will add more ports, but they will all be seen as one fan by the system

Hello, you didn't mention how the CPU_OPT works. I was having 2 more fans so I connected them to the free plugs I still had. One is the CPU_OPT but for it I can't see any setting or control. I can only make it run when I set the profile on Turbo or Full Speed but it doesn't have any smart mode nor listed in the "Fan Xpert". Any suggestion?

CPU opt sometimes just replicates the main cpu header, but depends on the board, sometimes it is set to DC to run a pump

My cpu fan on the software does not show any numbers on the rpm section on the right of your screen its all zero its in smart mode I have a thermalright peer assassin 120 so used the splitter cable and plugged into the cpu fan header on my asus 650b with wifi motherboard....there are 2 headers but only 1 says cpu fan UPDATE i pressed auto tuning and it now has all rpm numbers in

This method is not working with cooler master pl360 Flux on Asus Citrix B650E mobo. I adjusted all fans to PWM silent mode and pump to 70% in bios. When the windows 11 starts all the fans start to turn at 1600 RPM wth 60db noise. There is no way to adjust in Armoury Crate app because of a bug imho. I also tried Fan control app but that did not solve my problem either :( I connected Pump to AIO pump socket and radiator to CPU opt on mobo. Fan expert section in menu opens a blank page. It shows the fans very rarely. What is your opinion?

Both you should use the DC for the water pump connected to the water pump or AIO header and PWM for the fans on the cooler connected to the CPU header

Hello, I am having an issue where my fans are running, but do not react when adjusted through the BIOS. Full Speed does nothing and neither does manually setting the fans to 0. They run at a steady 800 RPM. My bios shows I have a CPU Fan (Which Works with no issues) and two CHA fans(They do not adjust) Needless to say, my PC is running hot at 84*C when under load.
