How to Control the Weeds in Your Clover Foodplots!

I've done other videos on this subject but this video addresses every technique I am familiar with when it comes to controlling the weeds in your clover foodplots. I love me some clover! Deer love them some clover! Help that clover stay healthy by controlling the weeds.
I discuss mowing clover, spraying clover with Slay & Arrest (clethodim, etc.) and even RoundUp in this video. I discuss some other neat techniques, too. I hope you enjoy it! And I hope your clover prospers!

That sheet will point out an error in my video, and that is that Arrest has no appreciable soil activity--you can re-seed shortly after spraying. But Slay does lay in the soil for a while and can affect future plantings for quite some time!

As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...

Tip !!! Deer love clover but they don't like being so exsposed in daylight. Try a mixture of taller plants so they become more comfortable feeding. My friend and I plant a 5 acer field in clover. The owner of the property hunted the plot for 4 years and never saw a deer. They became nockturnal. Sweet potatoes are great. The deer can walk around waist deep in cover. Once they learn to dig em up, they'll be hooked. A farmer contacted me and begged me to help him get rid of the deer. I have seen as much as 100 deer at time during daylight in his tater plot.

That's pretty cool! I did shoot a few deer out of this plot, this was years ago this video was made. I do have a clover plot this year with weeds growing up all around it, a small date sized food plot lol. That's my preference!

What a great video! The grass in my clover got out of control even with mowing twice so far. I used Arrest for the first time ever on Wednesday and did not see any changes in the grass 3 days later. Thanks to you I now know it may take a bit longer than expected, thank you. We have been so wet in central Pa this year everything is still green like spring. I had 3 more inches on Friday. Glad to hear you mention Don's channel. You and Don are the only two channels I trust when it comes to food plot information.

I don't agree with him on everything of course but I really do appreciate hearing his thoughts on everything, that's for sure. He seems like a really interesting genuine guy. We have used a weak Roundup mix to kill the grass but leave the clover. We have found that the clover IS still stunted but it shrugs it off IF you have rain soon after spraying. We sprayed once and didn't have rain for 3-4 weeks and the clover looked sickly until a week or two after the next rain.

that's all i needed to hear and i thank you for your feedback as always! I am going to do this tomorrow on my small Ridge Staging Foodplot. It's got some chickweed, and Roundup has the cure! I know Slay is the spray of choice for that, but I don't want to spend the money on that for such a small plot and my other plots have been okay with just mowing. I really appreciate the comment, it gives me the guts to give it a go. I'll keep you posted.

Don't forget to re-seed the clover when you kill the grass. There will be openings for the new clover seed to take root! Our turnips are about and inch tall. Brother Dean bough a PTO tiller this summer. What a wonderful machine. I hate the old time plow/disc/disc/disc/drag/drag method!

Two weeks ago I planted one of my four small plots. I used Antler kings oats I also had some whitetail clover left over from my first plot I planted so I mixed it in with the oats. My thoughts were in the spring to turn this into a full clover plot. I hope it works out. I'm heading out next Friday to check it and prepare plot 3 and 4. I'll take a pic and post it. If this is a bad idea to mix the seed let me know. Thanks Ron

not necessarily! i don't usually do that because clover and oats have different wants/needs. clover likes mowing, oats don't. clover needs all season to grow and mature, oats don't. clover likes potash and oats like nitrogen . that last part is okay because clover will add nitrogen to the soil, kinda, and oats will lap that up. so they benefit each other that way but they like different fertilizers as a result. so that's why i don't usually do it. BUT another reason you might WANT to do that this time of year is that the clover will start growing and maybe not mature, but the oats will keep the deer happy and off the clover long enough for it to mature, and then next spring frost seed more clover and it'll be a banner clover foodplot. There's no ONE answer. What you're doing is WAY better than nothing and the deer will love it, for sure. They'll pick clover and oats over nothing any day! Woohoo!

What would you recommend to create native browse on a property that's almost all white and red oak?? Almost nothing is above ankle high on the forest floor and Ik how much deer love them.

+TJ Sloan in a case like that maybe you don't want to try to offer everything to the deer. Normally you want to do that but in your case you might want to let the neighbors provide bedding areas and native forage and you just provide the Oaks. Especially if the Oaks drop every year. One thing you could do is cut anything that is not a mast producing tree. Try leaving mineral stumps or hinge cutting those less valuable trees. That would create pockets of vegetation. Another thing you can do is monitor your trees and take an inventory of them. If some of them are not good producers or if some of them do not produce consistently year after year, try cutting those trees and fertilizing the ones that do? I have no oaks so I have no experience with this but if that's a possibility you might want to consider those options. What a nice problem to have! Good luck.

How do you go about mixing in the brascas into the clover plot for the fall?

i don't do that (i typically let the clover plots run their course and when their at the end of their life cycle i spray, till, and plant in august. You COULD no till drill in brassicas i suppose, but that's not my thing. hope that helps.

Great vid yet again. Question though, I always hear about crop rotation because it has I guess a life expectancy? But if I frost seed every spring, won't the clover just be healthy every year?

justsomeguy Clover is a bullet proof crop and I would pick it above anything if I could only pick 1 crop to plant. All you need to plant Clover is good soil contact due to the size of the seeds and lime and fertilizer will make help it greatly. Clover is a nitrogen fixer and you would rotate other crops in with it that are nitrogen deficient. Chicory is also a great addition to clover, it is just as easy to plant and deer and turkey both love it and clover.

This year the farmer planted corn 25 yards away from my blind LOL Still I got to make a mineral pit . I hope The deer don't get over whelmed by the rows of corn. The rows of corn almost touch my buddies property that died he would of laughed, maybe not animals can sneak in to his property using the crop. ( ground hogs here hurt our foundation they do horrendous DAMAGE farmers cows get broken legs when they step in there holes im told ).

Clover is almost rr. One ounce /gal of round up will make it sICk but not kill it . Most weeds can't take that.

I like this channel, I like this video but Glysophate/Round Up is a Carcinogen and part of the reason I love venison, is it's ability to be carcinogen free...

I do not believe it causes cancer but if you're not comfortable with it, don't use it, that's for sure.

@@Deathbybunjie On its toxic, spray it on worms or bugs and watch their reaction. Glysophate has been linked to non hodgkins lymphoma.... And it's in most everything we eat and drink to some extent... We should avoid using it where ever possible. That's one of the reason I got into hunting, to avoid eating the same toxic food that is making everyone else sick. Btw love your videos, you're very articulate.
