Understeer: What Is It & How To Control It on a Race Track
In this Quick Tip for performance and race drivers I explain what understeer is, and how best to control it. If you want to drive fast, if you want to drive at the limit, then you need to know how to manage understeer. Understanding the what and how of handling characteristics is key to driving fast.
Whether you're a beginner with HPDE (High Performance Driver Education) events, a regular track day driver, an experienced race driver, or anything in between, I aim my Speed Secrets high performance driving tips at you. All have one thing in common: to help you be an even better driver.

With your hand motion at 2:02 my first thought was, "When you have some understeer, instinct kicks in, and you..." pull the hand brake! :)

I've found for 4awd cars like subies, using a "jerky" steering technique results in reduced understeer. By "jerking" between a more and less grippy angle, you can get the car to turn more without losing as much front traction, as it avoids leaving your tires positioned too far over for long periods of time and thus avoids traction loss. This can be the difference between under and oversteer in a subie, which tends to do both depending on how the driver controls the car.

If you have the power and throttle.control.you just oversteer and push through with the natural understeer

My corvette understeers mid turn with neutral power. It goes away once I get back in the throttle. Will breaking harder/sooner and accelerate sooner help this?
@Speedsecrets1

Most likely not. Getting to throttle sooner will cause more weight transfer to the rear, reducing front grip, making the understeer worse. If you trail brake longer into the corner, you MIGHT delay the onset of understeer to the point in the corner where you’re beginning to unwind the steering - and that might make the understeer a non-issue. Of course, if you can get to throttle and cause some amount of power oversteer, that will get rid of the understeer - but sometimes that’s not the fastest way as you’ve really gone beyond the grip limits of the rear tires. Ideally you’d tune that mid-corner understeer out with a setup change to the car.

about the last point , does hitting the brakes help transfer the weight forward ?
@Speedsecrets1
@Speedsecrets1 7 лет назад
Yes, applying the brakes transfers weight forward and increases traction on the front tires. Think about every time you apply the brakes - the car's nose dives. The reason you don't want to brake hard to control understeer (in most cases) is this: The front tires are already at their limit, and even a little beyond. To ask them to also handle the extra demands of braking will most often cause them to slide even more - increasing understeer. That's why just easing your foot off the throttle is enough - in most cases (but not all). And yes, there are the rare times when you can gently brake to help manage understeer, but it's the exception to the rule, not the rule. Thanks for the question!

actually you also shouldnt lift your foot off the throttle pedal completely, decreasing the throttle enough for providing grip will do better. if you suddenly cease all the throttle engine has it may cause oversteer, balancing the degree of the throttle is very important at this point

In a front wheel drive car you can lightly brush the brake with your left foot during a corner to get the fronts to bite without having to lift the throttle and balance the car this way, this doesnt work in RWD cars.

Can over slowly the car lead to understeering?
@Speedsecrets1
@Speedsecrets1 3 года назад
Yes it can. If you overslow, then get on throttle to regain speed (because you sense you have grip to use), you unload the front tires and the car can understeer.

How so? They're both driver coaches. If they both are very experienced and good coaches they're eventually going to discuss the same topics similarly with good advice
