See how you can quickly and easily convert a gas bottle into a compressor air tank reservoir by machining the old gas valve and replacing it complete with standard 1/4'' BSP fittings.

Steve, I think you have the greatest variety of milling executions on the Web. Your considerate editing makes everything watchable, particularly with the audio up to catch your tips and explanations of things which probably aren't written down anywhere. I just finished restoring each component of my Southbend 9A, and while it's degreased I will paint it before reassembly. Since you've answered every machining question I could ever have I'm left with only this superficial curiosity: Would you please share/post any details on the color of your Myford lathe, and/or the paint you chose to use on the gas cylinder in this video? The fresh coat of paint on the cylinder caught my attention as it looked to be in the same family of colors as your Myford lathe. Thank you sir!

You know what makes an handy air receiver? The air receiver from a worn out compressor! That's what I used when my old compressor wore out. It even came with the correct air fittings and separate water drain. lol

Nice conversion. Some way to drain the inevitable condensed water - and there will be a slow build up of water - would be a good idea.

I was thinking the same, easiest way to do that is use the bottle upside down and fit a t piece and tap.

@@dalemcinnes1834 which requires work, dismantling. it should have a bung welded in the bottom first, with a nice, easy action valve. theyre supposed to be drained DAILY. only places i see that being down is panelbeater shops. ive pulled over 250L from a 400L tank at one place. they even bought a freaking new compressor... it was the tech installing it that asked when it was drained... "well, ive never done it for the two years ive been here. thought it was an auto drain..." it was the tied off airline hiding in the back of the welding bay. obviously someone had tried blowing air on something and got a bucket of water instead. rather than wondering why it sprays water, and the compressor is overhead... they tie it off. man, i love working with idiots... but noone KNEW!

These things need to be inspected regularly and they have a use by date. If you've used an old one it's probably at the end of its life. No one will recertify it if you have modified it or changed its contents. They only cost about $30 new and empty with a 10 year life span, which is a small price to pay for peace of mind, not to mention safety. It's a handy hint to give you the capacity to pump up a tyre in your driveway at midnight in the rain. It also gives you another obstacle to kick around the shed when you're looking for something for a job which has to be done "right now". Stavros, the bloke with the crowded shed, as in Crowded House

The reason for the 10 year time frame is not for the tank with propane in it. It is for the safety relief valve. It could possibly stick after 10 years and not work properly so they make you buy a new tank or change the valve with a new one and recertify it. Dale in Canada

Pressure vessels require a PSV. Hydraulic testing to 1.5 x their MAWP and certified. Low point drain if filling with wet air.

You can just use 1/4" BSP- tail end and air line hose etc to fit the simplest way. I may show it on a video at some point. There are many different fittings and it depends what compressor you have what type of air connection ie PCL or euro type fitting?

Hi Steve, I have been doing this, but royally screwed up the tapping process, and to make it worse, I left the brass part in the tank, so had nothing ti get the threads out. Eventually got it out with a die grinder. Do you know the thread size of the male part of the brass section? I need to see if I can get an adapter now. Thank you
@SteveJordan

HI Kieran, I will have a look tomorrow. I may have a spare brass section part. Hope to contact you tomorrow evening if I have one or just give the thread size.

A few cheap adapters and you could have done the same thing using the original valve . A $10 connection that screws to the propane valve that has a male threaded side for an air hose disconnect for another $5.. This is wayy too complicated but you did a good job and if you have a lathe, tap and dye and the tools then I guess go for it.

Some of the adapters aren’t available in the uk. They don’t like you being able to connect random stuff to propane tanks here.

I can't believe it I never comment on RU-vid videos but I had to ring in on this one. Why the hell not just buy a ball valve with that 3/8 pipe thread already on it or a female pipe thread with a 3/8 pipe nipple that extends it out as far as you want? After all it's just pipe threads you don't need all them washers and all and fittings to get to the same results of a ball valve
@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 3 года назад
Its a tapered thread in the gas bottle so it makes sense to use the existing part. The 1/4" BSP and two seals are easy and low cost to buy and can be connected straight to all my airline fittings without buying extra adaptors. If you have a buying link for a ball valve which is 3/8" BSP male tapered thread to a 1/4" BSP thread and it is cheaper than what I used... I would be very interested?

Just a word of warning, those cylinders are not covered by any insurance company in the UK. Having purchased a number of machines from the US we were forced to remove such tanks and replace them with CE stamped receivers that meet the UK standards. Extremely dangerous.

@@union310 just because a US tank isn't ce marked doesnt make it dangerous, same with a gas cylinder, have you seen how hot they get before they explode, you probably work in health and safety and have no concept of common sense, just spending other people's money!

I've used them for years. After all they are only pressurised to 100psi with a compressor. Which is way below what they are designed to take!!

@@SteveJordan it has nothing to do with the pressure you have in it. It has everything to do with the wall thickness, corrosion protection and construction type. If you don't believe me ask someone who else is qualified to inspect it under a written scheme.
