In this video I show you how to take a thrift-store-bought tape deck ($8) and Audacity software (free) to convert your cassette tapes to mp3s. Yeah, it takes a little elbow grease and diligence, but it can be done. The LAME encoding dll is required to export to mp3 format from Audacity. I show you how to avoid the pitfall of a missing dll. You'll also need a Y-splitter from RadioShack ($9) which connects your RCA jacks on your tape deck to your 1/8" microphone/sound input jack on your computer. If your tape deck is dirty, get some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and a cotton swab to clean the tape deck heads and rollers. Cleaning is optional of course but you'll improve the quality of your final mp3s. It's all in this video.

For the most part, you are correct. You do not want to allow clipping by the way. Clipping means you are distorting the wave form. You should never exceed 0db under any circumstances especially in digital recording. By the way, if you export instead save in audacity, you don't need to go through that additional step of downloading that additional file. By the way you helping others, I applaud that. I have been in audio for 45 plus years, and analog, and digital systems are my reason for being. The reason by the way you don't want to allow clipping is that you induce DC in the audio wave form that is inherently AC by its nature. Clipping is the flattening of the peaks and valleys of the wave form. That of course is distortion. Instead of amplify only. Get familiar with Compression, and normalizing. This will give you allot of time better results than just amplifying alone. Also, if a recording is super important that you can get only once. Record and save in uncompressed .wav file, and create the .mp3 file copy for your everyday enjoyment. .Wav is lossless. .mp3 is certainly not. Also if someone doesn't have a microphone input, there are cheap Analog to digital USB output one can get. Also some Cassette decks which are very inexpensive already have the USB output, and the free license to Audacity included. Yes I know Audacity is open source. ION I believe is one company that makes a Cassette deck to computer via USB as well. There are turntables with USB out too that you might want to look into and share with your audience here. Thanks for your video.

There is a way to "download" sound from youtube videos. You can use the Audacity software to record what is playing on youtube in your browser by using a loopback device in the device settings in Audacity preferences. Once you've recorded the sound in Audacity, you can export it as mp3. Let me know if you need further details and help.

Go-to the RU-vid video. Type ss in front of RU-vid, I mean between www.youtube... i.e www.ssyoutube.com..... this will do the magic. It ask you to download software, you can ignore and simple download that music alone in any format that they provide. Enjoy.

Thanks for this, but what is the advantage of using Audacity vs ripping the audio the same way but with Windows Media Player on Win 10? I am doing that right now. One benefit of audacity seems to be it can handle output from a cassette player to a mic input port on a laptop. WMP works fine plugged into a desktop line-in port but laptops don't have that port, thus sound is excessive and has to be monitored. Audacity clearly has more controls, but is more complex.

You can do in Audacity normalizing, and noise reduction/hiss and click reduction.

I know it has to be something simple, but the only sound I get is from the room. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong.

Hey Joe. In Audacity, go to the Edit dropdown, select Preferences. In the Preferences dialog, select Devices. Play with the options in the dropdown for Recording Device. It's probably set on internal microphone. Also, in the same Devices dialog, you can try changing the interface host from MME to something else, but it should work on MME. Good luck. Let me know if you have any more trouble.
