How to Convert Lat Long in DMS to Decimal Degrees in Excel

Thanks a lot for this educational video. One thing I discovered after banging my head against the wall for a while is that depending on which "quarter" of the world you are in the +/- may be different for your decimal degrees. For example I am in South Africa, therefore south of the equator and east of the Greenwich Meridian so my latitude DDs need to be negative and my longitude DDs positive, which is the opposite to Moulay's example, as he must be based somewhere like the US (i.e. north of the equator, west of the GM. Otherwise very helpful, thanks!

I know it would be adding an extra step, but, for negative values aka Western Hemisphere, instead of subtracting, you can use the same formula used for lat vales, but when finished, simply multiply your DD by -1 and convert that way.

I did the first step a little different tough, because my coordinates didnt align very well on account of different number of characters - so i couldnt use the fixed with very well - i first selected the two original columns and substituted º ' " and N/W with instead of deleting them after the separation. :)

Good stuff. Is there a way to take a coordinate and reduce the digits, but keep the N or S at the end. For instance Let's say I have a 8 grid coordinate 3400N 2100W and I wanted to remove the 00 and at the end of the first and only 1 0 from the second and end up with 34N 210W is there a simple formula (conditional formatting or something I can do that could be applied to the cell?

Nice, but how does one work with a -00d20m35s latitude...? Similar to negative declinations in astronomy. This technique does bot handle this particular case.

You can easily convert degree minute second values into decimal degrees value in Microsoft Excel instantly. The length and amount of data is not a problem at all.
